Cobra's spit in defence, there isn't alot of defending involved in hunting 😉

I didn't know that, thanks for telling me. The thing is though, it is still a ranged weapon. I agree that it's not in the manner I thought though, more like a skunks stink canon!
The main issue I have is the use of a weapon, I know of no animal that has a ranged weapon.

If you wanted to creep through the woods, dive on a bucks back and choke it to death with your bear hands then I'd have no issue with it being fair.

Of course you wouldn't, because then I'd have given up the only advantage I had. Duh...

I understand that you only take shots from around the 25 yard range but a animal has no way of defending itself from that range other than running, I don't think the fact that it's been unable to sense you makes it ok or fair to kill it.

Tough.

I know it's taking the issue to a extreme but I don't see much of a difference between animals and humans, yes we have higher brain functions but that doesn't give us the right to kill things we are smarter than.

You're absolutely right there - there isn't any difference between animals and humans. And every animal hunts - except for herbivores, and even those will eat meat when their other foods are scarce. It's not called "the food chain" for nothing.

I mean, if an alien race came to earth and started 'hunting' humans i'm pretty sure that most hunters would have an issue with that.

We'd fight back, sure. But we don't have to get that extreme: there are things here on earth that hunt people, too. We kill them when we can find them just to stop them killing, but I personally don't harbor any ill will toward them; they're only doing what's in their nature to do.

In fact, thinking about it, I'd have much more 'fun' hunting hunters (no real ill will to anyone, just having fun) because they are equal to me, after all, stepping on ant holds no challenge.

You don't know the difference between an ant and a grizzly bear? Then I'm pretty sure I don't want to go hunting with you...

Cobra's also hunt, and they have massively deadly venom that their typical prey doesn't. Not very fair of them, is it?

When cobras hunt they bite not spit, its the range of attack I have an issue with.
I kinda get the theory of eating meet but not personally killing it.
I'm all for supporting the troops, but I know I'm too much of a wuss to be able to aim a gun at someone and just shoot them.
I'd be over there wanting to sit down and discuss things with the suicide bombers and getting myself killed.
I just don't think it's in me.

Aside from perhaps dire situations. Like if I WAS starving or had to feed my kids and all I had was hunting or death. Or if someone broke into the house to kill us, I'd like to think I'd get up the nerve to actually shoot someone.

I have no trouble with soldiers or people who shoot intruders or hunting (other than the ones I mentioned) but, it's hard to imagine ME actually doing it.

Heck we had to choose when we got our snake between one that ate dead rats that we'd have to kill or live ones. I went with live because I can't even kill a rat. And I HATE RATS! I just let him do it....it's HIS dinner after all!

Food Chain has its links if we didnt have ingenuity and intelligent thought wed be pretty near the bottom and wed be hunted by other things

if you really want a fight where you dont have the unfair advantage go hunt a bear or moose with a low caliber weapon (dont actually as youll likely end up dead)😉

interestly enough my dad was hospitalized about 2 years ago by a moose in the Rocky Mts.

no i edited it lol it was supposed to say 2 years ago but he was actually in the hospital for a few weeks

WHEW! Two weeks is much better....two years and I say that was one HECK of a MOOSE!

And still are on occasion.

1. I listed all the advantages my prey have over me earlier. You should read threads first. Learn something new #1.

2. It's kinda fun when a fish puts up a fight, but when I hunt, I'm looking for something to eat. Putting up a fight makes the meat tough and rank: Learn something new #2.

3. Take a low caliber weapon after a large animal, possibly wound it and have it run off where it might take hours or days for it to die? I submit that it's not hunters who are crap sportsmen - people who use weapons that aren't capable of making a quick, clean kill need their asses kicked. People who think suggesting it is clever need to learn something new #3.

By a poor, helpless, defenseless moose? Nonsense. Why, he shoulda just smacked it on the snout, wrestled it to the ground, and tickled its belly until it yielded...

She's killing animals for sport, whether she eats it afterwards or not seems irrelevant to me.

No, she is killing animals so she can eat. She chooses to participate in the cycle of life in a hands on, non-denial fashion that allows her to be an active participant in nature. Mankind has lost its connection with the natural world and its place in that world, we are mammals, we are omnivores and we are also an integral part of the natural world, not a passive observer somehow disconnected from having any effect on our surroundings.

The only difference between hunters and those opposed to hunting is that hunters accept their role in nature, while those opposed to hunting deny that for anything to eat another thing dies. Far more animals are killed and displaced for agriculture and urbanization than are ever taken from hunters. In fact entire eco-systems are permanently altered or destroyed to build houses and plant soybeans and corn. Insects, worms, snakes, squirrels, gophers, deer, bear...etc you name it is directly affected when we expand based on our needs.

As deer, bear and other species are increasingly confined to smaller and less desirable habitats, the need to hunt actually increases for a variety or reasons including but not limited to, lack of available food, increased disease, dangerous human animal encounters that include car accidents, bear and big cat attacks on children and pets and nuisance encounters such as coons, possums, etc in garbage and deer eating the foliage from human gardens.

The hunter provides a valuable service in this day and age, that those who never venture beyond the pavement cannot even begin to realize. Although, with todays super markets and fast food life is easier to live, it is no less important for humans to consume food in order to live and when all else fails (as with Hurricane Katrina) the hunter and woodsman will be the go to guy so that you may live.

I disagree with that statement, simply because I know she would eat even if she didn't kill anything. So I do agree that she killed it for sport, even tho she didn't discard the carcass; she eats what she kills - which is neither here nor there because the animal is still dead. But the fact is that she's not poor nor starving, & she would have had a meal even if she didn't go hunting that day.

She chooses to participate in the cycle of life in a hands on, non-denial fashion that allows her to be an active participant in nature. While I agree with this in general, I don't agree that "we are omnivores" because even tho much of humanity does eat meat, & it is good for us (to a point) to have the protein, the fact remains that it's not necessary to eat meat for us to survive. We could easily survive on fruits & veggies.

humans being omnivores isn't something that is in question. We are, whether you believe it or not. Otherwise vegetarians would starve to death.

What do you think inscizor teeth are for
^ It's actually a LOT harder to get the necessary protein that way than it is to just eat meat. Possible, but really REALLY difficult.

Yes, but *not* eating meat wouldn't kill you.
I can't remember her exact words on the subject, but I definitely got the impression that Eliza went hunting with her boyfriend so that they could share the experience, which is completely different from doing it "for" him.

The impression I got is that she wouldn't have gone *hunting* if her boyfriend wasn't *into it* - & whether it's called "sharing the experience" or whatever, I got the impression that she did it to be with him, to do what he does. If I was dating a hunter (& I did date a few) & he asked me to come share that particular experience with him, he'd get a big fat NO WAY answer. If he wanted me to share the experience of, oh say, a hockey game, then I might go... you know, to "share the experience" of hockey. 😉

Cattle, pigs, and chickens are animals, and have just as much right to live as deer, rabbits, or quail. To accept the slaughter of one, and to enjoy the meat while condemning the killing and eating the meat of the other, simply because it is done with a bullet or an arrow, while condoning the death and consumption of the other just because it is done with a mallet between the eyes is both, to quote a famous Vulcan, both inconsistent and illogical.

Live long and prosper.

Just for clarification: I never "condemned" the killing/eating of other meats (deer, rabbit, etc.) I just said that *I* wouldn't do it. It's not for me. If other people want to eat other animals, that's their business. But I wouldn't feel right eating veal, or quail, or whatever. In other words, I stick to *farm animals*.

And oh yeah, farm animals... there's a whole nuther can of worms to open up for another thread...(you know, the whole "inhumane treatment of animals that are grown as food" topic... )

Which also evades the reality that "farm animals" also used to be "wild animals"...

While I agree with this in general, I don't agree that "we are omnivores" .
1: Its not a question of wether she would eat anyway, but the fact she hunts, makes a kill, and eats it. If everyone done this, it would be more humane on wildlife overall.

2. Us being omnivores isnt something for you to agree with, its a fact. Omnivors can eat anything. We can eat anything. Herbivors for example cannot eat meat.

Buffanator agrees: Yes, but *not* eating meat wouldn't kill you.

Neither will "not" eating vegetables, though it isn't particularly healthy to do so. Humans require a mixture of meat (protein, at least, and meat is the easiest source of it) fruit, and vegetables in order to stay healthy. That's why we are called omnivores rather than carnivores, who require a diet of almost exclusively meat, or herbivores whose diet ie almost exclusively plant products.

I know, & I agree - but apparently I didn't word my opinion in a way that got my point across. ;^)
all you have to do is look at some human teeth to tell were omnivores. We have both canines and inscizors(not sure it thats spelled right). Its a fact of life!

Also on the barnyard animals, thats not really that inhumane. Except maybe pigs. They are fed and in turn they give us things like milk and eggs. Now stockyards/slaughterhouses is a whole different story, but suffice to say if everyone was a vegitarian we'd probably never be able to produce enough food to feed ourselves.

i didnt really mean *inhumane*, just meant if Everyone hunted, and there was no commercial food production, it probably would be fairer on animals.

And, Little Willy here, he's the POSTER CHILD for all that is FAIR AND JUST in this world!
