Well when I went Vegan I had never felt better in my life. Rowan, maybe I'm not wording things right, but I don't think you are understanding what I'm saying. Regaurdless, I'm not here to convert you all. Your minds will never change and mine probably won't either.

However, I don't think it is very fair of you to question my research and beliefs just because you don't agree with me.

May I just point out that between the ad-hominem attacks, the occasional badly-supported points, and other various and sundry bad tactics, this isn't a very nice debate. In fact, it's becoming downright evil.

how so?

You're right, and I apologize to the entire forum. I think it might be better if I just stay away from this place for a while.
No, you don't understand what I was trying to say, I could tell by your responses. It's my fault though, haha I don't think I explained it right. No need to get snappy.

Yer I saw this on youtube, but she was discussing it at a convention promoting dollhouse. Im a meat eater but there is no way I could bring myself to do that!. I guess ive got respect for it, she eats what she kills thats gotta take guts (no pun intended), but the thought of it makes me kinda quezy.

You just HAD to come here first, didn't ya? The one thread of recent times that does NOT show our best behavior!

Yeah. Not enough baby seal clubbing, nailing live puppies to the wall or launching kittens from skyscrapers going on. We're slacking.
Okay, well then how come all "other" omnivores and carnivores can simply catch their prey and eat it on spot, but we have to sanatize it, cook it, make sure it has no illnesses, etc. Because we weren't meant to take it in. We have worked our way around it and called ourselves "omnivores" because we enjoy tasty animal flesh. Meat isn't exactly good for us either, I mean aside from the protein which can be found from other sources, what does it do for us? Hm..rots in our colon?
Only red meat rots in the colon. Red meat isn't easily digested by any animal that isn't a carnivore. That doesn't mean we're not omnivores, it means we're not carnivores. Plus, we cook our food for two reasons:

1. Cooking food kills bacteria. Humans prefer not being dead.
2. It tastes better. Do we cook carrots because of how dangerous they are to our system?

This is how they are supposed to eat meat. It's natural, it's what they do. We obviously weren't designed to, because of all of the evidence I've already given, and because of the fact that our bodies can't take in raw meat. It's NO because we choose not to get the illnesses, it's because we just can't do it.
If we were herbivores, then we wouldn't be able to digest meat. Even if we warmed it up first!

If you think we're herbivorous, go take some leaves from random trees and eat them, see how you fare.

I love your avatar. Juliet Landau is so beautiful.
1. Cooking food kills bacteria. Humans prefer not being dead.
2. It tastes better. Do we cook carrots because of how dangerous they are to our system?

1. But if we are omnivores we should naturally digest it as it is, bacteria and all!
2. No, but we do that for meat.

If we were herbivores, then we wouldn't be able to digest meat. Even if we warmed it up first!

If you think we're herbivorous, go take some leaves from random trees and eat them, see how you fare

Our body has a hard enough time digesting it as it is! It isn't very healthy (protein aside).
Herbivore doesn't automatically mean I go outside and eat some leaves, you know that.

or you should.

If we are omnivores with any degree of sentience we know that meat often has things wrong with it. Bacteria loves meat, therefore to sidestep the troubles that other omnivores would probably have with disease and the fact that we're not big fans of diarrhoea, we choose to cook it. If we were herbivores, we wouldn't be able to take meat in any form whatsoever.

That's exactly what herbivore means. They have a different digestive system meant for digesting tough plants which we can't stomach.

Can I point out something obvious about carnivores?

Any animal that kills another animal for food *usually* eats it right then & there (or takes it back to their nest, cave, etc. to feed their young.) The *meat* doesn't have time to get rancid.

*USUALLY. As in how many animals kill an animal & then save it for later? Most animals don't have access to freezers.

I am a firm believer in not starving to death, for that reason I'm happy to co-exist in both camps as an omni.

I can't eat carrion like a lion does when it runs a hyena pack off a bloating elk, the parasites would end up making me bloat along with it. That's ok with me, though..... not the eating carrion part - I am firmly against self bloating.

I can't eat Eucalyptus leaves like a Quala bear either, because it too would cause my end and make me bloat. Again this is OK not just for the prior mentioned distaste for bloating, but also because from what I hear...those quala's can rip you a new one and I would prefer not to compete with one.

I do envy the goats though...my friends goat could eat bark, thistles, poisonous weeds, it's halter...pretty much anything of the non meat nature.

What I can eat is corn...and if corn runs short when our alien overlords run us all into hiding, I can eat that which competes with me for the corn and suppliment my diet of cob with hoof.

I am certainly no nutrionist and some of those links were hard to understand for me, as they were dueling banjo's, but certainly meat has more in it of worth than just protien (not that protein is a small thing, amino acids and the like)....I keep hearing about cod liver oil and other meaty contained goodness. We are smart enough to rig our intake with pharmacueticals so that we can eat as we wish, but if we are truely natural herbavores....how many peanuts would I have to eat to account for that one steak, and how does that play into a balenced diet/ calorie intake?

Is there such a thing?

I'll bet those damn alien overlords know.

you saw my "drop bear" post then? ;)
You know, I gotta admit, both camps here have interesting points.

Do we cook meat because we learned it killed bacteria and we wouldn't get ecoli or because we honestly couldn't digest it but it was the one food that came to the caveman instead of the caveman having to forage for it.

We have canine teeth for ripping meat, but it's they're hardly as big as even my cat's teeth.

And then, where to Twinkies fit in? Surely no living thing was designed to digest those!

The bad news is that short of pouring gallons of beer down Little Willy's throat and turning him into a caveman and then feeding him raw wildebeast and seeing what happens, we'll never know.

Is it that our stomachs can't digest raw meat or that we jumped on and fixed the bacteria issue before we had a chance to evolve into beings that could tolerate the bad things.

At this point, I'd say we're omnivores though. I know I can stomach meat that is barely cooked. Actually better than most other things because I have a tendency to become anemic at the drop of a hat. And I also know that simple vitamins or getting protien from non-meat items doesn't fix the problem.

And, maybe it's the Mommy in me, but I tend to firmly believe in the whole bit about needing a balance of everything. I admit I feel GREAT after some V8 juice, but I also feel good after anything that's not junk food.

And the bigger problem is that in this day and age, with almost everything processed and for most items at the store you're more likely to get your RDA of riboflavin before anything else, it's nearly impossible to tell what we were MEANT to ingest or what our stomachs could originally handle.

We probably CAN take pure raw meat, it's just not particularly advised. I know people that have blue steak. Which is a horrid thought.

Actually, in a survival situation, humans are perfectly capable of eating raw meat, even if it's been dead a while. No promises it won't make you queasy but then again if you eat partially rotted veggies I think you'll get a tummy ache too. Have you guys ever seen that Bear guy on Discovery? He eats all kinds of crazy stuff and isn't at all dead. Have you seen some of the vegans that look like they just escaped a prison camp? I've noticed that some vegans look rather sickly, all pale and listless. I'm just sayin, doesn't look all that healthy.

As for PETA, my fundamental problem with them is their hypocracy, and the fact that occasionally they seem to put the lives of animals over those of animals. I'm all for the protection of animals, but if it comes down to me or them, I'm gonna have to go with me. That said, I'm a big supporter of the Monterey Bay Aquarium, because they not only work to protect the oceans but spread awareness and do some very useful research, all without being holier-than-thou about it.

And I have to say, this whole debate feels a bit like one of my classes here at college where typically young, but some older as well, students will listen to the teacher and accept everything they say as absolute truth. I just feel like an awful lot of the anti-hunting arguments seem based in something other than fact. If you don't like hunting, just say it. You don't have to justify an opinion, but quit putting up convienient little table that looks like it was made by a high school kid and offering it as evidence that you're right. Send us something with sources, with a valid scientific base or else mayhaps the rest of us will start making up facts as well.

Oh, can we just leave the whole intelligent design/evolution debate far, far away from this thread? I don't really see how it has anything to do with well, anything. Hows about we all just state our opinions like adults, and stop all the pissing contests that are going on in here?

Love to. I think I said before that I'm pretty confident in my ideas, and so is everyone else.
It's not really going to change. Aside from that, I'm most excited for the protest on saturday. haha.

Reminds me of Faith's whole speech about her and the alligator when she first met the Scooby Gang. I'm personally against killing animals though (I'm a vegetarian), especially hunting for recreation. Even for food.. the slaughterhouses and conditions they put the animals in (read Eric Schlosser's "Fast Food Nation" or watch the movie).

Great post, Violette. I'm also vegetarian, trying to go vegan.

The two videos that got me started: Meet Your Meat and Earthlings. Okay, confession, I didn't get more than a few minutes into Earthlings. My sanity wouldn't allow it. : erm :

I only read few of your comments...And I gotta say I'm a little over-whelmed ;-}This has gotta be the biggest forum I've ever been on...there's just so much info, kudos for the founder though,I mean how many sites are still open for 7yrs....
Anyways to the matter at hand...the interview and Eliza hunting....
Well I gotta say I loved the interview...The woman is just so down to earth and genune and doesnt seem full of herself and she's such a crowd pleaser,I've never seen any actor/singer engage with the audience as much as she does...still not getting to the point okay
In my opinion,I personally am not gonna judge her.To be honest if I had the chance to try something like elk hunting I'd jump at it.I mean c'mon it's not like she does this on a regular basis and we know it wasnt for sport{although I'm sure while hunting there was few laughs a long the way}They all ate what they killed,it wasnt an act of cruelity or anything.
And her doing it just because her boyfriend does it...Well look, what she said was something like "Ya know when you're involved with someone...you try and get into what they're into" So she gave something that he enjoyed a go.
Anyhoos gonna wrap this up cause I'm sure loads of people have typed just exactly and more of what I said ;-}
One lasted added comment that's totally off base,Eliza looked so hot when she was pulling back on the bow ;-Dhahaha I loved that little expression she did when your man ask "So what's this doing for you...sexually right now?"
