I've been watching some of the old shows featuring Faith lately, and I just got to wondering: was anything ever said about Eliza's martial arts experience, or lack thereof? Certainly, most of her fight scenes (and Sarah's, David's, and James' for that matter) are done by stunt doubles, but some of her closeups, scenes that can't be faked, show better technique than anything Sarah did in her closeups. Possibly she has a background in dance or gymnastics, but I've never heard one way or the other.

She has a brown belt in Karate.

But Sarah also has quite a lot of experience - brown belt in tae-kwon-doe, and is also trained in boxing, kick-boxing, and streetfighting.

Dushku did once say she could take Sarah in a fight, she said she's bigger. hehe...she's so cute.

Sarah must have been trained after the show started as in the beginning she stood wrong for fighting, she held her hands wrong 'cos if she had hit anyone with those fists she would have broken her own hands.

Sarah had done martial arts for 14 years. Which was before Buffy. She would have only broken her hands if she made a fist with her thumbs on the inside of the fist and then she would really have only broken her thumbs. It is not rare for people to break their hands when punching someone. That is definitely not an odd occurance. I do agree tho that Eliza looks great fighting.

Actually, her hands aren't in as much danger as her wrists. When you punch, care must be taken to keep a straight line from elbow to fist. If the wrist isn't straight, the force of the blow will break or dislocate the joint. Watch carefully some of the scenes where Sarah is punching the heavy bag and you can see a definite bend at the wrist. A punch of any power would snap her wrist quite easily.

TabulaRasa.
Martial Arts punching is different to streetfighting punches, different parts of the body are targets. The thing about Sarah's fist was the way she held her fist, the angle of her fist and the prominance of her knuckles, if she hit and struck a decent bone, such as a cheek bone her knuckle would have smashed and possibly the bones on the back of her hand.
But with all the grunts she made when she hit some-one should should take up tennis.
