Emails pretending to be from the boards

As far as I remember when you register it gives you the option to select if you want your email displayed when it takes you to the options page?
So the email will be there if you've allowed it to be, same with if you view the who's online, it will the the ways you can contact them, depending on what the user has allowed to be displayed.

After I read Buffy S.'s post I checked my own account, and it seems that by default our Contact Info is accessible to Everyone (mods correct me if I'm misunderstanding the CP). That's how mine was anyway as of today, and I didn't set it to that myself.

But it turns out it's really simple to obscure your contact info from the default "Everyone" setting:
1.) Click "User CP" (top left of the page)
2.) Click "Profile Privacy" (upper left of the sidebar)
3.) Change the Contact Info Drop Down Menu to your liking

It might be best to at least restrict contact info to the Registered Members option, rather than to the Everyone option by default...

I changed mine, you guys might want to fix yours as well.

You have the option to email a user, but not to gain their email address. In the case of certain users who give their MSN details, their email is plainly on sight, but this is more to do with MSN usernames being email addresses more than anything. For a user to contact one of us, and pretend to be the boards, they would first need our actual email address and not only the link.

I'll give you an example, I have allowed under my profile for you to email me... that doesn't allow you access to my email address, just a one way communication. If I reply to you, THEN you get my email.... This random user is pretending to be BB under a different name so it (it... i like that, not a human worth designating) must have made contact with these people prior to doing it.

Right - what Silum said. This person is not using the "send email to" function on the board, but are emailing people directly from their own email account.

As Silum said, people can only get your email from the boards if a)you email them from the board or b) they email you and you reply to them

As BB.com grows more popular, there is the chance that you will receive e-mails that claim to be from a BB team member or administrator. While often this is the case, it may be fradulent as well. Sites like PayPal and other large companies have fradulent e-mails being circulated on literally a daily basis.

Here are some tips to protect yourself:

1. There will absolutely never be any e-mails sent from BB.com that ask for your username, password, or other personally-identifiable information.

2. E-mails sent from BB.com will always be from the account "noreply" and from the domain "buffy-boards.com". The header should include an IP resolving from BB.com hostname.

3. E-mails that were sent via the e-mail form at BB.co will always be tagged with the following. Official e-mails will never contain this text.

4. Note that the users listed at Buffy-Boards - Show Groups are the only BB team members. Crafty users may try substituting letters with visually similar numbers and such. If you're unsure that a message you received is from a moderator, send the moderator an e-mail or private message by clicking his name in that list.

5. Always be cautious when posting your e-mail address publicly as spambots and other undesirable users can pick it up. Instead, if you must use e-mail, use the mail form here which completely hides your e-mail address from the sender.

6. Never trust e-mails that contain in URLs the "at" sign or a colon.

Immediately report any e-mail you consider to be suspect, whether you are certain or not. If you think your account's security has been compromised, change your password immediately.
