Emergency: Need help burning DVD

So the footage for the film I have to show tonight came to me on a DVD-R. And wouldn't play in my computer because I only had a DVD-ROM.

So I bought a DVD burner.

And I took 24 hours loading the footage and editing it, and now I need to burn a DVD. And I have no idea.

I read this post: how do i burn avi files into a dvd+r blank media playable? and have been following the directions there, but I'm not sure if it's going to work even.

Plus my quality seemed to get worse in the middle of editing which I have no explanation for...ugh.

Anyone have any knowledge about burning DVDs? I have it in avi and quicktime mov formats.

I know it is too late now but avi can be burned by Nero. "Make your own dvd." I use nero to do just that. Otherwise you could be looking at a converter and then running it thru another program but that is alot of work and you still have to have a converter. But for me the best place to smack it all in, windows movie maker. If you are having a hard time coverting and what not. Just open up windows movie maker, import the video, save it to your computer once done editing drag it to burn using your computers common software. Or follow these steps: If you right click the file you want to burn and go to 'send to' you can usually send files to your dvd burner that way from the drop down. And I have done it that way which is how I know it works.
 
If I do that, can I play it in a DVD player? On my Nero I don't have a choice to burn a DVD, just to copy a DVD, make a data DVD, or burn a VCD.
 
Making a data dvd is for data or photos. Information and what not, no videos as in dvd format. Avi yes. Data dvds can be played on your dvd players as long as it is capable. Most dvd players are. I am pretty good when it comes to burning. So let's start at the beginning.
1. Is it an avi you are still working with or have you converted?
2. What nero are you using? I mean like Nero express or Nero smart start etc. If you want to know more about these programs I can help you, just im me. I will see what I can do 😉 If you can get your hands on smart start, you're set.
3. I need to know about your dvd player. Most these days have no problem playing data discs. Some even play divx so you don't even need a special burning program etc.
 
I have Nero 7 Ultra, which has Smart Start. My DVD player does play VCDs, but since I now have the DVD burner, I wanted to take advantage of it. Most of what I want to burn are avi format. 🙂
 
ok good you have smart start. Here are the steps you need to follow.

Open up smart start
Click on the yellow Star for options to list below
Click on 'make your own dvd'
Either drag and drop your avi file into it or add the video by using that option in the list to the right.
Then, you can make menus and such if you would like. But if you want to keep it simple just keep hitting next till you see the burn button. Make sure tho, just before you hit burn that you make sure it says NTSC/Pal or whatever you want to use. If you are in the USA, which you are, use NTSC. It should already be set to that.
Then burn.
 
Sometimes it will tell you that it doesn't allow MPEG4 yada yada and it will say buy or close, just close. It will still work all the same. I am not sure why it said that about editing software. I would check the title of the file. If it seems remotely off for some reason just rename it. But I don't think that would have anything to do with it. Just cranky I guess.

depending on the size of the dvd disc, try not to de compress/compress anything although it makes information smaller
to fit more on the quality reduces so its bettter to just fit just under what the dvd can take..
oh and if it asks burn at x1 or something like that do the most realibe choice cos its more likely to have no problems, no errors, etc.

my film teachers at school (if this helps) tell me about dvd burning and depending on what programs you are using, the program might automatically compress/decompress which isnt that bad but yea as i was saying thats what makes you loose quality of whatever you put on there, especially if the actual quality of what you have (the content) is bad it will be worse get me?
 
I'm using Nero Vision, and depending on how much you load into the queue, it tells you what the quality will supposedly be (Very Good, Average, Low etc). I've put about 4 show episodes on one 4.7 G disc and they seem fine.

Sort of on this topic... any suggestions for a decent, and more importantly, free DVD author program? I'd been using CDBurnerXP on my old laptop, but it's a no goer for this one, so I need an alternative. And I'm not pirating DVDs, just so you can sleep easy. 😀
