Emma was born on April 8, 1973 in San Diego, California. She attended La Jolla Day School for high school, graduating in 1991. She began acting while she was there, taking drama classes and doing plays at La Jolla Playhouse and The Old Globe Theater, both in San Diego. The summer before her senior year of high school, she went to London to study at The American School In England (TASIS). She also won an award, Excellence in Theater Arts, from her high school recognizing her acting abilities and talent. After graduating high school, she went to San Fransico State University to major in psychology. However, she dropped out halfway through her freshman year when she was 19 to go to LA and pursue a career in acting.

She has won three awards for her acting. Two for the short she did called Hallow in 2007, and one for her role as Anya on Buffy.
Along with winning an award for Anya, she was also nominated for another award that same year for Anya that she didn't win.
