Emma Sanderson, November 12th – November 25th 1994

November 12th, 1994

It was a cold night. But Emma Sanderson didn’t feel this cold. Because she was always cold. She never feels a thing, just pain and anger, and sudden outbursts. But tonight was different, cause she finally felt something, but it wasn’t the cold. A sudden burst of energy through Emma’s body; she couldn’t help but scream. She didn’t know what else to do, screaming was the only thing she knew. She always heard the guards talk as though she was a baby; they thought she was dumb, incompetent, weak, and crazy. They were wrong…well, except for the last one. She was crazy.

She really, really was.

As Ken Brown walked in the cold, he snuggled into his coat more. He had just been called to a slayer, meaning the last slayer has already been killed. He couldn’t believe that he, Ken Brown, retired from the Watcher’s Council for 15 years, would be called on to the watcher of a new slayer. This was fabulous news, of course, but the new slayer was an insane asylum. If he ever found out who chose the slayers, he would personally stab them in the face. Why choose an insane person!? What’s the point?

Ken Brown pondered this question as he hurried to the asylum, ready to confront Emma Sanderson, the new slayer. Ken walked into the asylum, to the woman behind the counter. “Hello, I am here to see Emma Sanderson,” Ken said. The woman looked down the list, and said, “What’s your name?” Ken responded, “Ken Brown. Someone high up should’ve called. I have permission to see her.” The woman looks very closely at the list, and then back up at Ken and said, “I’m sorry, I can’t seem to see why you were given permission? Who are you?” Ken, smiling, simply said, “I am Ken Brown. That is all you need to know. People ranked high in the government have given me the order to go ahead and let me see her whenever I please. Now, get out of my way and show me to her room.” The woman nodded, and looked up at Ken. She led Ken to a door and took out a key. “I must warn you, though, Emma has begun to show some violent tendencies,” the woman said. “I can handle it,” Ken responded. The woman put the key in the lock, and Ken said, “Now, I must warn you. Whatever you think you see, whatever you hear, do not come in. Not matter what happens, if you come in, there will be dire consequences. Do you understand?” The woman, scared, nodded, and opened the door. Ken walked in, and quickly shut the door. Ken Brown was now standing in front of his newly called slayer, Emma Sanderson. In an asylum.

Emma seemed so sad and innocent in the cold, dark room. The lights had been turned off, and the bed had rips and tears in it. The girl was not in the bed. The young 16 year old was curled up in the dark, dusty corner. Ken Brown, nervous, tried to look into Emma’s eyes, but Emma was looking down, nowhere near Ken. “Would you like to sit on your bed?” Ken nervously asked. Emma looked up at him for one second and then looked back down, which Ken took as a no. He sat down on the ripped bed, and tried to get Emma’s attention again. “Do you know what happened to you?” Emma started shaking her head, trapped in fear. She said, “The light! The light – it came into me and the rush! Ah, the rush!” Emma screams, and Ken jumps back a little. “I feel real, I feel like a rocket to the moon, I can do anything that requires the moon to jump; to leap!” Ken didn’t entirely understand what Emma was trying to say.

Ken looked Emma in the eye, who was now staring at him, and blatantly said, “You are the chosen one. You are the slayer.” Emma cocked her head, a bit confused. “The stars don’t allow it! They can hear your scream and they can’t bear the sound of the oceans!” Emma said, getting more and more violent. Ken said, “Woah, woah! Calm down, Emma, I’m Ken Brown, and I’m here to help you. The stars allow this, Emma, no one’s screaming.” Emma stares right into Ken’s eyes, scared, and said, “But someone is. You. The rush of your blood, screaming in my ear! Make it stop!” Emma grabbed her head and screamed, “They won’t allow it!” Ken screamed at Emma, “They will allow it, Emma; they already have! You are the slayer, and you already know what that entails. I know about you. You’re old watcher drove you nuts, training you, pressuring you. You were just a normal high school girl till you couldn’t take it anymore. You just…killed him.” Emma is now paying more attention to Ken. Ken continues, “But you won’t kill me.” Ken stands up and walks to the door. “I’ll see you if a few days, Emma, to help you become a better slayer.” Emma, in anger, shouts, “They won’t allow it, they won’t allow it!” Ken opens the door and smiles at Emma, “Oh, Emma…they already have.” Ken shuts the door on his way out.

November 16th, 1994

The asylum was deathly quiet, once more, as Emma shifted from left to right in her sleep. She wasn’t on the bed. She was never on the bed. The door to Emma’s door is slammed open and Ken walks in dramatically. Emma seems comforted to see Ken in her room again. Ken shuts the door and turns on the lights, illuminating the dark, depressing room. Emma lets out a scream and jumps back, scared of the light. Ken doesn’t seem to care about Emma’s fear. “You’re fighting vampires, who fear the light. You can’t fear the light, or you’ll be just like them. You can’t fear anything at all,” Ken said. Emma didn’t seem angry anymore, just listening. “The stars will allow it.” Ken smiles at Emma. “I’m glad they allow it.”

Ken walks closer to Emma, in her corner, and says, “Stand up, please.” Emma easily obliges. “Good, now the first thing we need to do…is get you out of here. You’re a slayer, and you need to be outside, doing your job!” Emma nods, and Ken is surprised. Ken says, “Why do you respect me? Why do you listen and understand me?!” Ken goes up into Emma’s face, and Emma blatantly responds, “Because you’re badass.” Ken looks at Emma, confused for what minute, and then just laughs. “I’m pretty sure you’ve never said that word before, huh?” Ken asks. Emma doesn’t respond. Ken smiles, “It’s time to get you out of here. You have strength beyond your wildest dreams. Break down that door.” Emma listens and walks over to the door. She quickly says, “You asked why I like you.” Emma pauses for a moment, and then continues.

“The blood runs red as the night approaches. Death and darkness applaud you, in a play, you are the hero, but the reality has not been approached before.”

Ken, shocked, understands what she is saying.

“Let the truth come spilling out like a bucket full of guts, fire engulfing us all, just so the spitting image of yourself will burn, like the sun shining around you. Death is around you, but you just can’t seem to care, hiding your true self.” Emma stares right into Ken’s eyes. “That, Ken Brown, is why I like you.”

Emma, having just been saner than ever, punches the door multiple times, and it eventually is pushed off its bearings. Ken and Emma walk out and are approached by guards. Ken tries to assure them that everything is fine, but they don’t listen. “Woah, guys, stop it, it’s okay!” Ken says, but the guards just push him to the side. One of the guards, with a syringe. He smashes the needle into Emma’s neck, and she gasps, falling to the floor. She is unconscious.

“No!” Ken shouts, and Emma is dragged back into her room. The guard looks into Ken’s eyes, and grabs him by his neck. “You are never to come back here again. If you do, we will call the police and you and her will go to jail. Good day.” Ken gets up, grudgingly, and walks away.

November 24th, 1994

Ken, with a glass of wine in his hand, is flipping through the stations on the television. He looks depressed, not sure of what to do. He is in a hotel room, with very fancy furniture. The door opens quickly and a young man, a teenager, in a suit, walks in. He has curly, fluffy, red hair, but he still looks incredibly serious. The young man says, “Mr. Brown, what’s wrong?!” Ken, putting his glass down, says, “You can call me dad.” “Sorry…dad. But, aren’t you going to go see Emma Sanderson, your slayer?”

Ken stands up and walks to the mini-refrigerator in the hotel room, and opens it while saying, “I was kicked out of the asylum. I am never to return again.” His son nods, understanding Ken’s pain. He can’t see the girl he is destined to protect. The son says, “I can do it.” Ken turns to his son, almost angry, and shouts, “Charlie, that’s ridiculous! I wouldn’t even think of it!” His son, Charlie, moves in closer to his father and begs, “Please, father. Let me do this. It’ll train me to become a watcher.” Ken grudgingly gives in and leans against the wall. Ken says, “Fine. Yes, you can.” “What do you want me to do?” Charlie asks.

”I need you to break Emma Sanderson out of that asylum.”

November 25th, 1994

It was another very cold night…just like November 12th, 13 days ago. 13 days ago, another slayer died, in an instant. She would die tonight…in an instant. She, Emma Sanderson, would not live to see the light of tomorrow. She would only see the dark, cold walls.

Charlie, the son of watcher Ken Brown, was trying to prevent that tonight, as he walked next to Emma’s door, and slowly opened it. As he walked into the room, he was covered with light. It was not dark; the lights were on. And Charlie found Emma lying not in the corner of the room, but on her torn up bed, trying to mend the rips and tears. Ken had changed her in just a matter of 13 days, yet none of it truly mattered. None of this truly mattered.

Charlie shut the door and walked closer to Emma, who finally looked up at him, confused and scared. “Who are you!? Who the hell are you!?” screamed Emma, desperate and looking for a weapon. Charlie tried to calm her, but it wouldn’t work, “Emma, it’s alright. I am Charlie Brown, your watcher sent me!” Emma screamed at the top of lungs and jumped off her bed. “Where is my watcher!? Where is he!?” Emma shouted at Charlie, as she walked slowly closer and closer towards him. Charlie responded calmly, “He couldn’t come, so he sent me instead; I am his son!”

“The stars won’t allow it, they just won’t!” Emma smashed her fist into the wall, making a large dent. “I don’t believe you, not at all! The blood doesn’t run red, you’re not his son, you just wish me harm!” Emma took Charlie by his face and smashed him into the wall. Charlie began to cry a bit, scared for his life. “Tears will fall but you have no heart! Not tears of joy or sorrow, but of lies, for humanity has fallen,” Emma said, and with that, she threw Charlie to the ground.

“Please, I am sorry! Don’t hurt me, don’t hurt me,” begged Charlie, but he couldn’t convince her of anything. Emma moved closer to his head, and grabbed each side of his neck. In Charlie’s last chance of survival, he screamed, “Someone, help! Please! Guards! Help!” With that, Emma snapped his neck, making him stop screaming. Emma slowly said, “The blood ran red, but it runs no more. The stars allow it.” Emma grew scared and screamed, “Why do the stars allow it!? Why!?” Emma punches the wall as the door opens, and the guards are shown in the doorway. They see Charlie’s body, and are shocked. One of the guards said, “Oh my god.” Emma moved closer to the door and smashed the two guard’s heads together, making them fall to the ground, unconscious.

Emma ran as fast as she could, towards the exit. It seemed closer and closer. She was hoping the stars would allow it, hoping they would let it be! But they didn’t. As she ran to the door, a guard with a gun jumped it front of her. Emma didn’t think; this gun wouldn’t stop her. She ran straight at the guard, who only feared for his life. The guard was scared, and didn’t know what to do. So he did the only thing he could think of. He raised the gun. And he pulled the trigger three times.

All three bullets landed in Emma, two of them close to heart. She collapsed, and started gasping for breath. The guard ran to the phone to call 911, but he knew it was too late. Emma would die in a matter of seconds.

Emma wasn’t mad or sad or angry…she knew what had happened. She knew about the stars.

The stars didn’t allow it.
