Encounters with the mentally ill...

I'll try to be sensitive, because I do know some people with disorders and don't want to hurt anyone's feelings. But in the spirit of the thread, I do have one good story...My mum works as a teacher's aide for ADD kids and whatnot in a public school, and one day, she escorted this little kid down to the bathroom. He came out complaining that there was no toilet paper, and then showed me mom that he had no socks on. He used the socks to wipe his butt! LOL.

Lol ok thats messed up, seriously. I have ADHD and I would never wipe my ass with a sock.
And mental illness also runs in my family, my fathers side I think. There are unfortunately a lot of disorders there, I have inhereted possibly one of the worst disorders there is.

No not ADHD, but APD - thank god I don't live in the UK they would lock me up in a hospital in accordance to their law. Personally I don't care that much, it hasn't had any negative impact on me as of yet.

Okay can someone explain what ADHD and APD are?

ADHD:

ADHD or ADD is characterized by a majority of the following symptoms being present in either category (inattention or hyperactivity). These symptoms need to manifest themselves in a manner and degree which is inconsistent with the child's current developmental level. That is, the child's behavior is significantly more inattentive or hyperactive than that of his or her peers of a similar age.

Symptoms of Inattention:
often fails to give close attention to details or makes careless mistakes in schoolwork, work, or other activities
often has difficulty sustaining attention in tasks or play activities
often does not seem to listen when spoken to directly
often does not follow through on instructions and fails to finish schoolwork, chores, or duties in the workplace (not
due to oppositional behavior or failure to understand instructions)
often has difficulty organizing tasks and activities
often avoids, dislikes, or is reluctant to engage in tasks that require sustained mental effort (such as schoolwork or
homework)
often loses things necessary for tasks or activities (e.g., toys, school assignments, pencils, books, or tools)
is often easily distracted by extraneous stimuli
is often forgetful in daily activities
Symptoms of Hyperactivity:
often fidgets with hands or feet or squirms in seat
often leaves seat in classroom or in other situations in which remaining seated is expected
often runs about or climbs excessively in situations in which it is inappropriate (in adolescents or adults, may be
limited to subjective feelings of restlessness)
often has difficulty playing or engaging in leisure activities quietly
is often "on the go" or often acts as if "driven by a motor"
often talks excessively
Symptoms of Impulsivity:
often blurts out answers before questions have been completed
often has difficulty awaiting turn
often interrupts or intrudes on others (e.g., butts into conversations or games)

I don't have a specific source for APD but APD stands for 'Antisocial Personality Disorder'. It's a recently invented category for everything involving Sociopathy and Psychopathy.

Ahh see over here it's referrred to as ADD. And as for teh PD; over here you'd only be locked up if you committed a crime (I'm so not going there, M'Naghtan rules are very coplicated) but without knowing specifically what sort of thing you suffer from, I'm in no place to say. Just Britain's not that bad, honest! 😉

Well ADD and ADHD are two different things, about 94% of those with ADD are females and 75% of those with ADHD are male. ADD and ADHD have a few distinct differences that I cannot recall.

As for APD; I am personally suffering from common textbook Sociopathy and correct me if I am wrong but isnt there this law in Britain where if you are evaluated to sometime during the future possess a danger to society they have the right to place you in mental care even against your will (I would define this as locking someone up).

Now I would never, ever - tell someone I have APD around here IRL. On the net I don't really care though 😛.

As far as I know there's nothing like that; but I'm a lawyer chick, not a social worker, so I can only approach it form a criminal side 🙂

I never knew there was a significant difference between the two AD's...I don't even know what the lnog title of ADHD is though, so I'm kinda dumb 😀

I was walking down town L.A with my cousin when this homeless guy came up to us and asked for money and when me and my cousin said we didnt have any he wouldnt let us walk past him, he kept steping in front of us and laughing...... this guy at a store came out and asked him to leve us alone.
And one night me and my two best friends and Boyfriend were walking down hollywood and this guy with 3 kids and a wife or sumtin came up to us and asked us if we had a place for them to stay and we ignored him and kept walking and he starded cussing at us and caling us all this crap. We called the police on them and he was about to get in a fight with my and my friends boyfriend and these two big guys walked over and told him to back off....it was scary!
Dont ever walk in Hollywood after dark lol......crazy shiz!

Oh Willow...I am very sorry you went through anything like that. Parents are so important to their kids and when they break that trust and hurt them in such ways...I'm gonna cry. I feel very strongly about that kind of thing too and I really am sorry.

My mother, despite her exclamations to the contrary is mentally ill and both physically and mentally abusive. It's not easy growing up in a household like that-I know. I'm sorry to any of you around here that HAS had to endure that.
