End of Days...Was one of Buffy's most formidable foes?

I'd say Glory was probably her most formidable foe. But yeah, Caleb was well played by Mr. Fillion.

Glory was merely stronger than Buffy. Buffy outmatched her in everything else...including wits.
Caleb was way tougher than the turok an. Powerwise, Caleb and Glory were the toughest. I loved Calebs laid back fighting style, like it was all too easy. It was great when he first meets Buffy, giving a speech about the one and only slayer then easily punching her across the room.

That moment was absolutely priceless.
 
I think part of the reason why Caleb was so scary-evil and formidable was because he basically represented everything the Slayer had been against since the dawn of time. Male/demon dominance, all-encompassing evil, chauvinism...it makes sense that one of the last Big Bads of the series would be such a woman-hater. 😛

It is fitting! Cause Slayers are all about woman power!
Ehh.. Glory was better, her plan was like one of the only aside from season 1 that would kill Buffy.... Plus she made me laugh.

He was still The Firsts vessel then, we just didn't see where he go his power from. He was quite formidable, I'd say Glory & Adam beat him but that's about it.

Stronger than Buffy.....as in one of the very qualities that would make someone a very formidable opponent. Buffy never came close to hurting Glory throughout most of season five. As far as her outmatching her in wit, Glory was able to find the key, take the key, and leave Buffy a mess unable to fight any longer for a time. None of the other villains got Buffy to that kind of breaking point. Oh yeah, and in the end, Buffy didn't even ever defeat Glory. Giles had to kill Ben for her.
 
When you say "formidable", do you mean that by physical strength? If so, I guess he was. However, when I hear of formidable, I think of enemies who were not so much physically stronger than Buffy, but still stood their ground against her -- Angelus, Spike, Faith, Sunday, Evil Willow, Turok-Han, etc. In that respect, I'd say the Turok-han was Buffy's most formidable opponent.

By both these definitions, Glory is quite the formidable opponent. She's the only one of the baddies that had Buffy and her people fleeing in terror. And they were so desperate for a way to hurt her they had to go crawling back to the Watcher's Council. And Glory herself was almost impossible to kill. It was only because Giles was willing to kill Ben, and stopping Glory's plan still resulted in Buffy's death. I'd say that makes her a far more dreadful baddie and much more difficult to kill than the Turok-han, which beat her good at one point, but she was still eventually able to kill just using her fighting skills.

Again, when I said "formidable", it was in the respect of someone who isn't blessed with titanic strength but can arouse fear, dread or alarm and be difficult to defeat regardless. This is why I mentioned the Turok-han along with Spike, Sunday, etc. They were barely stronger than Buffy, but overcoming them was no easy task. This is how I interpret(ed) formidable; the definition you gave was right, however, I used it in a different scenario to suit the theory. In the sole respect of being dreadful and difficult to undertake, and considering everything you mentioned, Glory was/is Buffy's most formidable opponent. But my opinion obviously excluded the femina-Hercules' and Man of Steel from the ring match. This means that I don't consider the Turok-han apart of the same class as Glory, formidable-wise.

I always thought that Caleb got his power from the first the entire time. The only reason that I was fear full for Buffy and they gang when it came to him is because he had the first on his side. If it was just him, not sure I would have been scared if it was just him. I loved how Buffy finally killed him, AMAZING!

Glory is still the best big bad. She didn't even need to stop kicking her a$$ to talk to her. She is also a God after all. I don't know about the rest of you, but when I found that out that my eyes got wide.
 
The two times I remember seeing the most 'FEAR' on Buffy's face was when she was running from Adam (after he killed Forest) and when she was running from the UberVamp (aka Turok-han) after she dropped all those steel tubulars on him & he just got right back up.

So those are the two I'd pick - just from the expression of fear on her face.

I agree with Adam being at least as tough as Caleb, he was invincible if it weren't for magic.

In addition, her first encounter with the Master in Nightmares as well as in Prophecy Girl. First time we ever saw Buffy scared numbed;

Very well said. 🙂 I loved Caleb. He and Glory are my favorite "Big Bads" of the series. I think Glory was stronger, but Caleb was definitely creepier IMO.
