In 1915 Ernest Shackleton attempted to cross the south pole from sea to sea. His ship the Endurance got stuck in ice and was crushed. Shackleton and others managed to successfully rescue most of the crew after sailing for help in a small boat. The Endurance was just found by an expedition formed for that task.

I saw this on the ABC World News last night! the images are breathtaking! Hard to believe it has been down there over 100 years!

Shackelton rescued ALL his crew.
Not quite. 3 members of the Ross Sea party died before rescue. This was the group who was supposed to go ahead of Shackleton's main party and make supply depots. They ended up not being rescued until 1917, primarily because their ship (the Aurora) was also caught in ice and when it broke free the ship returned home due to damage instead of retrieving the party. They are considered the only deaths of the Shackleton expedition.

I stand corrected

There, that unseated you! Because, as you stated, you stand corrected, tee hee.
I always find these kind of stories really incredible.

It’s easy to forget in an age of planes, trains, and automobiles just how dependent the world (and discovery at large) was on ships. Sailing out to a world you don’t know even exists sounds both terrifying and incredible.

Hopefully with the discovery of this ship, we can get some more information on similar voyages and maybe get a new surge of people eager to go out and find the lost expeditions of the world

I wonder what kind of “wreckage” people would find in space (the next frontier)? Is it like Doctor Who, Star Trek, or StarGate, where ships might just be lingering out in space? How does the space vacuum affect spaceships when they have been breached? So many questions!

As long as it isn’t like Event Horizon, I’m fine with it. Evil hell dimension space ship is a no no!
At present there is a couple of thousand lumps of metal in orbit around the world. Some of which falls to the earth.

Would a modern day ship get crushed by ice, er no! Some modern ships have hundred of people on board. Said modern ships would have enough flavourings to make loads of smoothies, thereby avoiding the crushing of the ice.
The only problem of late are the use of plastic straws.
