Both the Mayor and Faith comment on how Buffy's death will trigger the calling of a new slayer. Now, i was under the impression that the OFFICIAL slayer line is running from Faith, so Buffy's death would not have the effect of calling a new slayer - Faith's death would.

ONLY UP TO SEASON 4...no spoilers please

Promise I won't spoil you, it's hard... BUT... Things don't ever seem to make much sense when it comes to the slayer line. I like to believe that the characters didn't really know what was going on, NOT the writing team...

Your right. The slayer line should run through Faith although there is the theory that Faith and Buffy would both have to die for a new slayer to be called. I guess Faith would know less about the slayer line than anyone since she didn't really study the history or mythology of it at all.

Well, technically since Faith was called when Kendra died, then the next slayer should be called when Faith dies. But we all know how because it's Buffy the Vampire Slayer, it only matters when Buffy dies. (hypothetically speaking, of course!)

Nobody had ever known of this happening before. IMO, they just didn't know who had to die in order to call a new Slayer, so it was all speculation on their parts.

Well, I think of it this way...

Buffy died -> Kendra called
Kendra died -> Faith called
Spoiler ->
Buffy died -> nothing mentioned (although there was Technically 3 full slayers running around, not just a bunch of Potentials.

Now, Boljoxa's Eye said it, ONE slayer at a time. It all got screwed up the minute Xander saved buffy way back in season 1.

Now my question is... I've seen it mentioned a few times in various places. Did Faith actually die in season 3? Maybe for a second? Personally, no I don't think so but...

Faith never died, not even a bit.
I'm pretty sure she only went into a coma.

Buffy died, So Kendra was called. When Kendra died, Faith was called. Faith was then in a Coma because Buffy stabbed her. Buffy is alive, Therefore no other slayers would be called.

The Watchers council knows that Buffy was brought back to life. They also know about Faith being in a coma. So they wouldn't send another Slayer because Buffy is alive. If both Buffy and Faith died, Then another Slayer would be called and another Watcher would be sent to train her.

The whole line of Slayers from Buffy on has been altered because Xander saved her. If Buffy had remained dead then Kendra would become the only Slayer. If Kendra had been killed by Drusilla or anyone else, Than Faith would have been called. Now the question is, Since Faith was in a coma, If Faith was put in a coma due to different circumstances, Would they call another Slayer? - Faith wouldn't be able to continue her slayer duties if she was comatose.

The whole slayer thing is confusing!

No because Faith never died whilst in her coma, she was probably on the verge of death when first in the coma. She was getting towards that time when her and Buffy spoke in that dream in Graduation Day Part 2. Faith was just strong enough to pull through and eventually come out of the coma.

The Watchers Council have no control over who to call next as a Slayer nor can they call one forth. They just have to wait for a Slayer to die and the obviously find out who it is who has been called. They knew Buffy was alive and well and ok not following their orders but I think they knew she'd still fight for good. All the Watchers Council wanted to do to Faith when she woke up was either punish or kill her so then a new Slayer could be called.

~SPOILER~

The Slayer line only became very fragmented the second time Buffy died because when she was ressurected it is believe the slayer line was split in two. So it ran through both herself and Faith again where as before it only ran through Faith.

Mayor Wilkins was only pressuming that Buffy's death again would call another Slayer. I don't think anyone from the Scoobies or evil until Beljox's eye and The First knew until Buffy came back from the dead that there was a double Slayer line and to The First it was unfair. Hence all the Potentials being killed.

~SPOILER END~

I like to believe that it was splintered since now there were two, meaning that a new one would've been called regardless of who may have died.
Which is a reason why the First later wanted to eradicate the slayer line; to prevent this from happening. The less slayers, the better.
Or I could be overthinking it.
