"As Christmas approaches, Giles returns to Sunnydale with three potential slayers, whom Buffy must protect from the First"”setting in motion a colossal battle between Buffy and a seemingly indestructible Uber-vampire.
As Xander sweeps up debris created by the gang's fight with the Bringers (see previous episode), Buffy tells her friends they must rescue Spike before the First manipulates him even further. Shortly thereafter, Buffy dozes off briefly. In her dream, she's visited by Joyce, who warns she cannot defeat The First. Meanwhile, the Ubervampire pummels Spike as the First"”in the form of Spike and and then Drusilla"”encourages the beating. When Andrew regains consciousness (see previous episode), he leads Buffy and the others to the high school basement and the antechamber housing the enormous seal. But Spike, The First and the Ubervampire are nowhere in sight. Buffy tells her friends they must cover up the creepy-looking device atop the seal.
Back at the house, Willow uses magic in an effort to defeat the First"¦only to summon forth the creature, which emerges from her mouth. Thinking quickly, Xander smashes a bowl containing the spell ingredients, causing everything to return to normal. Buffy advises her not to use magic to fight the First. A short time later, Giles shows up at the house with three young, potential slayers"”Molly, Annabelle and Kennedy in tow. Giles tells Buffy that the First has murdered most of the potential slayers, and their watchers, worldwide. Now, only a handful remain. He tells Buffy that the First predates all written history, so defeating it will be exceedingly difficult. He also states that the Watcher Council was wiped out in an explosion, and only a few files and books survived. Giles also tells Buffy that the First is not corporeal, and cannot touch or fight on its own. It works through others it can manipulate, and is assisted by the Bringers. Now, it's up to Buffy to protect the remaining potential slayers, for if she fails, the world as we know it will end.
Buffy and Giles make their way along Main Street, which is decorated for Christmas. They make their way to a dirt lot which was once filled with Christmas trees. Buffy falls through a hole and plummets into a cave, where the Ubervamp waits in the shadows. A massive fight erupts between Buffy and the Ubervamp"¦and Buffy soon learns that her opponent is immune to being staked through the heart. Buffy finds herself hopelessly outmatched as the Ubervamp continues its attack. She makes her way out of the cave"¦only to realize that the Ubervamp retreated because of the arrival of dawn. Back at the house, Giles tells the group that the Ubervamp is a Turok-Han, an ancient killing machine; a vampire's vampire.
When Buffy returns to her office at the high school, Principal Wood approaches her. The two discuss their favorite movie genres"¦and Wood states that he likes mysteries, and finding out "what's underneath it all in the end." Later, Buffy dozes off while counseling a student"¦and again dreams about Joyce. This time, Joyce tells her that evil is a part of everyone"¦and that it cannot be stopped. Inside the underground cavern, the First, in the guise of Drusilla, continues subjecting Spike to a merciless beating. As daylight slowly fades, Buffy and the others prepare to face off against the First. But Annabelle panics and rushes off into the night. The Ubervamp finds Annabelle and rips her in half. Buffy locates Annabelle's body in an industrial area of town. The Ubervamp suddenly launches an attack, sending Buffy to the ground. She gets to her feet and runs into a nearby industrial building, where the fight continues. Buffy pulls a level and sends a three-ton crate of metal rods crashing down upon the creature, but it has little effect.
The Ubervampire strikes Buffy, sending her crashing through a brick wall. Buffy lies there, unconscious, unmoving. Meanwhile, Spike tells the First (in Drusilla's form) that he can no longer be manipulated"¦because he's convinced that Buffy believes in him. Giles and the others find Buffy's body in the rubble. They move her to the house, where Giles concludes she should be hospitalized immediately. But later, as Giles addresses Willow, Dawn, Xander and the remaining potential slayers in the dining room, Buffy, a bandaged and broken, makes an appearance. A fierce resolve in her voice, Buffy proclaims that there's only one thing on Earth more powerful than evil: Them."
