After learning the doomsday beast may be working for something bigger and badder than itself, Angel's friends cast a spell to return his soul to Angelus' body.
Looking for Angel's missing soul, Connor, Wesley and Cordelia visit the shaman, Wo-Pang, but he insists he doesn't have it. Meanwhile, at the hotel, Lilah sneaks into Angelus' basement room and asks him to stop the doomsday Beast"¦and he says they might be able to work something out. Upstairs, Gunn and Fred bicker about their relationship, and Gunn finally says he can't do this any more and walks away. Just then, as the others return from the visit to the shaman, Gunn sees Lilah on the monitor showing Angelus' cage. He rushes downstairs with a tranquilizer gun and gets there just as Lilah is about to hand Angelus a crowbar. But Gunn shoots first and as Angelus falls back, Lilah escapes into a sewer tunnel. Wes chases after her and finds her in a subway bathroom stall, where she's obviously been living for several days.
As they talk, Wes sees a copy of the same ancient book he's been studying for clues about the beast, but while his copy says nothing about the creature, he finds a descriptive passage in Lilah's book that his is missing. She says she got her book on the pan-dimensional black market, and they realize that something or someone has been removing all references to the beast (both in print and in Angel's brain) in this dimension. Back at the hotel, the others realize that another creature must be doing at least some of the Beast's dirty work"¦and when they suggest he may have minions, Angelus sneers and corrects them: the Beast is the minion, and is working for a boss even more powerful than itself.
A bit later, Wesley returns with Lilah and tells the others that information about the Beast has been erased from texts and minds. As Wes and Fred go off to study Lilah's book, Gunn goes downstairs to guard Angelus. There, Angelus starts to taunt Gunn about his deteriorating relationship with Fred, but Gunn shoots a flamethrower blast that quiets him. Upstairs, Wesley and Fred don't find any new information in Lilah's book, and finally decide they need to compare the text to the information Wolfram and Hart carved out of Lorne's brain. Meanwhile, Cordelia and Lilah argue about whether they can find a solution to their predicament, but then Cordelia has a vision"¦in which she sees a way to bring Angel back. Fred runs to relay this news to Wesley and Gunn, who are still guarding Angelus, but when she arrives, Angelus tells her that Wesley has been sleeping with Lilah for the last six months.
A bit later, Connor and Gunn, on Cordelia's instructions, go to an Indian burial ground and dig up a box containing a creature called a Soul Eater. When Gunn cracks the lid, however, and a withered arm smashes out and grabs him by the throat. Connor beats the Soul Eater off, but it pops back again, and as they fight it, it grabs Connor and sucks his soul from his body. But then Gunn cuts off the Soul Eater's arm and head"¦and Connor's soul is returned. Meanwhile, the doomsday Beast humbly delivers an obsidian blade to his "master," and asks for his next assignment. Back at the hotel, Cordelia and Fred gather seven small talismans, and Gunn and Connor return with the Soul Eater's head. Lilah watches and declares the spell Cordelia is planning to cast will never work. The others ignore her, and place the Soul Eater's skull in a ring of yew branches by Angelus' cage. Then, as Angelus also heckles them, everyone else picks up their talismans, Cordelia tosses a handful of magic powder toward the cage, Wesley begins to chant the spell from Cordelia's vision"¦and Angelus is thrown back in a vortex of light shooting from the skull.
After the maelstrom subsides, Angel asks what happened, and Lorne senses from his aura that the real Angel is back. Fred suggests they let him out of the cage, but Angel himself says it might be too soon, apologizes for all the nasty things Angelus said to them, and offers to lead their hunt for the beast from his cage, just to make sure no one gets hurt. After the others move out to start searching the neighborhood, Angel and Cordelia apologize to each other for the mutual hurts they've caused"¦and she finally moves to open his cage. But the moment she does, he grabs her, yanks her in, morphs into vamp-face and reveals that he is, indeed, still Angelus. Cordelia kicks Angelus in the groin and gets free, but before she can close the cage door, he's gets out and slams her into the bars, knocking her out. Then Angelus goes upstairs, but when he tries to hug Fred, she realizes who he is. But she's distracted by a loud noise, and when she turns back, he's gone.
A moment later, Angelus finds Wesley and Lilah in the lobby, and says he's going off to save the world. But after he leaves, Fred enters and asks if anyone has seen Cordelia. A few minutes later, after the others find Cordelia, they all arm themselves to search for Angelus. At the same time, Angelus scours the street for some fresh blood, but all he can find are other vampires on the prowl. A bit later, as Lilah harangues Cordelia with "I told you sos," Angelus returns. Cordelia fires a crossbow at him, but he catches the bolt and flings it back at her"¦then gives Lilah a 10-second head start to run"¦and she takes off. Meanwhile, on the street, Connor realizes from Angel's scent that he doubled back to the hotel"¦and then we see Angel chasing Lilah through the maze of rooms. He catches her at the top of a staircase"¦but she flips him down the stairs. Then she runs again"¦but as she turns into a hallway, he appears in front of her .
My comment: It does explain better what may have happened to Lilah in Ep 13. Do you guys think she'll be vamped, would she just die or would she somehow survive this?
