The Serenity responds to a distress call from Nandi, an old friend of Inara's, who is running a brothel on the moon of Deadwood. The unsavory leader of the moon's only town where the brothel is located has gotten Petaline, one the girls, pregnant and is demanding that he be given the baby. Nandi enlists the help of the crew of Serenity to defend the brothel and keep the baby with its mother.

A western episode with added sci-fi. Seeing more of Inara and Mal. About time but we don't get to see what we want do we?

Oh, Mal. You're not fooling anyone.

A distress call for Inara. "This distress wouldn't happen to be taking place in someone's pants would it?" Keep insulting. We know how you feel about her.

"If they got guns and brains at all...
They got guns." Inara has high thoughts of the crew.

"I suppose you heard most of that.
Only because I was eavesdropping."

"They're not compainions. They're whores." I was as surprised as Mal.

"Don't know these folks, don't care to.
They're whores.
I'm in."
Jayne being Jayne.

"Look they got boy whores. Isn't that thoughtful." Indeed. Interested Kaylee?

"You'd really lie with someone being paid for it?
Well, it's not like anyone else is lining up to, you know, examine me." Guess she is interested.

John Thomas. That's new for me. I never remember so it really is new to me everytime I watch.

The "Tell me I'm pretty" scene. Love it, love Wash.

Seems that cell phones still exists and they're crazy small. Can't be many buttons. 😉

Mal wanting to leave as fast as possible. Burgess sure made an impression on him. At least he's offering to take the others with them. Too bad they don't want to go with them.

"You're my kind of stupid."

Baby talk. Who'd thought that Zoe wants a baby more than Wash.
A certain comic has something to add on this matter.

"Mine too." I love River.

"Who do you think is in there?" As stated above. Love River.

"I'm just waiting to see if I pass out. Long story."

Mal sure suck at lying to Inara. She keeps it together while talking, and lying, although seemingly cold to Mal. Just admit your feeling you two. Her breakdown is difficult to watch.

"Malcom seem a little funny to you at breakfast this morning?
Oh, Kaylee. We all know I'm the funny one."

Nandy realising that Inara has feelings for Mal. Oops.

Casualties, no space ship to help but still ending up on the "winning" side. Not bad for a days work.

"Jonah, say hi to your daddy.
Say goodbye to your daddy Jonah."
Cold, but can you blame her? Remember what Mal said, he'll come back until he get what he wants.

Second episode that ends with a sad feeling. People keep dying in a Joss show. Surprised?

Finally. Here it is, here it is. The truth will finally be admitted. "I'm leaving." Wait, what. No. This isn't it. Happy, I want them happy!

-I think that's Julie Cooper from The O.C.
-Bad guy with the goons sure looks like father-of-the-year
-"Only because I was eavesdropping." "“Awesome line from Mal
-"Don't know these folk, don't much care to." "They're whores." "I'm in." "“Wow, Jayne, gold as always.
-I think Mal is wearing the same outfit he did back in the swordfight episode. That doesn't bode well.
-The bad guy's gun looks like something you'd buy out of Nintendo Power.
-All of this guy's goons look suspiciously like Southern Confederates
-This is the first time I think that we've seen Inara look so vulnerable.
-River just being so fascinated by the birth was pretty funny, although they probably could have used her in the fight
-The fight has been awesome so far. I think that the baby-napping bad guy stole half his arsenal from Luke Skywalker
-Wow, Inara's leaving. That was absolutely not the direction I expected that conversation to go.

Good episode. There was some great action and as always, the chemistry between Mal and Inara was excellent. It really felt like their episode in a way, although it ended on a sad note.

I couldn't help but think what a hypocrite Inara was in that scene. Here she's been "plying her trade" all over the system, and that's perfectly fine. Mal has one night with someone and she has to lock herself in her room and have a good cry. The woman has spent the entire series doing exactly what Mal did once, and only then under very specific "we may all be dead tomorrow" circumstances, and she can't handle it. Maybe I'm missing something here, but all I saw was someone who could dish it out, but couldn't take it.

I think a few reasons came into play here. Only guesses of course, not facts.

The timing and that he slept with Nandy of all people probably gave her a bigger reaction than if it had just been "any" woman during their time on Serenity. I can't see her having a break down if it had been any other whore (sorry) even if the timing had been the same. Maybe just me. The two of them combined I can see causing the reaction.

Maybe she also make a big distinction between work and pleasure. Not saying that it justifies her reaction but to me it makes more sense.

Well, I found this episode disturbing, thrilling, angering, and lots of things in between. (Still can't understand how this show got cancelled?!)

This was my initial reaction, but then I started thinking that for Inara, sleeping with men is her job. Mal did it of his own free will and choice. Plus, it was a friend of hers, which had to hurt even more.
 
I love this episode so much! These last few episodes are really the best at combining drama, action, humor, and so so so much emotion.

Melinda Clarke is a gorgeous, gorgeous woman. I can't say I blame Mal there.

Kimberly McCullough who played the woman who betrayed Nandi & the gang is Robin Scorpio on General Hospital.

Angie Hart plays Lucy, the one who sings Amazing Grace at Nandi's funeral. She did other stuff on Buffy:
In 2002, Hart recorded and performed the song "Blue" for the episode "Conversations with Dead People" of the television show Buffy the Vampire Slayer. The song was co-written by Hart with the show's creator, Joss Whedon. As part of Splendid, Hart twice appeared on the show, performing Splendid's songs "Charge" and "You and Me". Splendid's song "Tomorrow We'll Wake" was also aired on Buffy as background music to a scene featuring characters Xander and Anya. She also sang backing vocals on Tara's song, "Under Your Spell" in the musical episode "Once More, with Feeling", of which Tobias was co-music director.

Hart also appeared in Joss Whedon's short-lived Firefly, playing the part of Lucy in "Heart of Gold". This part required Hart to perform "Amazing Grace" a cappella.

Heart of Gold was never aired on Fox, along with The Message and Objects in Space.

Whoa, that whole DNA tester device is creepy!

Mal's comment about there being "distress in someone's pants" 🙄 he isn't fooling anyone! Tell the girl how you feel!

Interesting to hear more about the companions and their situation and what lead to it become the career it now is.

I'm very surprised to see Jayne hesitating to get into a fight. I would have expected him to jump at the opportunity to put someone in their place.

LOL - Did Kaylee really just ask about male whores!?! She is great.

I really dig Wash. "because you're pretty" 🙂

Seeing Mal and Nandi together was neat - didn't like seeing Inara cry but it was nice to have her finally acknowledge her feelings.

Go Kaylee and Wash, trapping them in the hall!

Why didn't River stop the guy from taking the baby? I'm confused about why she turns off her fighting abilities.

Awww Inara! Don't leave! 🙁
