I absolutely love Serenity. I think it's a perfect movie to close the story of Firefly. I wish there could have been sequels, but it's still a great ending. And River totally kicks so much ass which I loved. 😀
I love the back story on how Reavers were created, and we got to see what they actually looked like! Just as frightening as I thought. 😱

Alright, pumped for the movie! It's a little hard to think that we're already done. It seriously feels like just a few days ago when we started the re-watch thread. I'm stoked though! I haven't seen this movie in years, probably since it first came out. Picked it up the other day for seven bucks on Blu-Ray, we just had an 80-inch, 3D T.V. installed with a set of crazy intense speakers, and I am SO ready. Here we go.
-Kind of a strange opening. If I hadn't seen the series I would be a little thrown by it. It jumps around a lot. It's a little strange having to take the chemistry back to basics for the crew. I know they have to re-introduce everyone for new viewers who haven't seen the series, but it's still kind of weird to see.
-What? We have sound in space now? When did that happen? Boo.
-River's first mission. Alright. Once again, calling it now: This is heading south. Quick. For starters, she's not wearing shoes on a bank robbery op. Not good.
-I liked the secret vault. Very cool. And Mal discussing gun shot wounds with the guy was awesome.
-About time the Reavers make a comeback. We were hinted at them for the first few episodes and then nothing for ages. River knowing they're coming was pretty crazy. And Mal's throwing that guy to the wolves, only to shoot him? Heavy.
-Oh my god that would freaking bolt through the knee would just wrench. "You shoot me if they take me!" "Don't shoot me first!".
-Getting the crew back into the ship was nuts. And let me say, we're only through the first action scene of this movie and 80 inches+surround sound+Blu-Ray+Serenity=Awesome.
-Good punch Simon. I like Mal, but about time.
-Simon and Kaylee's goodbye was sweet. Sweet, but sad.
-River's fight scene was just awesome. One of the best I've ever seen. It almost looks like she's dancing when she fights, which I'm sure was the idea. And safety word knockouts? Always good.
-I'm pretty sure "Mr. Universe" is the head elf from Tim Allan's Santa Claus movies. Oh, and he's creepy. Full marks there.
-I like the idea that some time has passed. Inara and Shepherd have both moved on from Serenity and established themselves elsewhere. And more clues to whatever his past might be. My theory is that years ago, Shepherd Book was an operative like this guy chasing River.
-Mal and Inara talking was a cool scene. You can just feel the tension. And everyone else eavesdropping on the conversation with popcorn was hilarious. Everyone wants them together, and knows they would be good together, but they just can't figure it out. "Did you see us fight?" "No." "Trap." Maybe that sums it up...
-The city/town Inara's in looks like something out of the Uncharted series. And okay, fake-English-accent-Jason-Bourne-like-guy vs. Mal. I'm looking forward to it, but Mal's chances aren't great. Mal's shot to the gut was awesome. And the way that this guy fights is pretty cool, very precise. Although, Mal and Inara probably should have killed him when the flash bomb went off (I liked that he knew it was just a flash bomb). Still, very cool to have Inara back.
-Haven's been blown away. Very Luke Skywalker-esque. Man...I can't believe Book is dead. "I don't care what you believe, just believe in something." I like the line.
-The conversation between Mal and the assassin was the best scene in the movie so far. Usually I can't stand villains that try and act all superior, but the fact that this guy knows what a monster he is is different. I like that.
-Something bad is going down on Miranda. Glutting up Serenity to look like a Reaver ship was pretty intense. And the crew flying through Reaver dominated space in that eerie silence was an awesome scene.
-Finding an entire dead planet? Very not good. Clearly the Alliance has done something here, maybe not intentionally, but something.
-Finding out the biggest coverup in history was pretty intense. That whole scene. Covering something like that up, a whole planet just going to sleep on itself and the rest who survived becoming the Reavers...and then to not tell anyone...That explains why the army would have just let the Reavers linger around there. So not only are The Alliance responsible for creating them, but they're responsible for not taking them out too, and everyone they've ever harmed. Pretty huge. It was interesting seeing Jayne, who's supposed to be the rough-and-tumble guy, being the one to turn the video off.
Definitely a metaphor for big government control here, big time (and maybe for marijuana? I'm not sure on that one). It also links back to what the assassin hunting River said to Mal about dreaming of a universe with no anger or hatred, and being okay with doing evil things to get there. Also totally explains why The Alliance has been hunting River so hard.
-I liked Mal's line a lot: "they're never going to stop trying to make us...better." No one can "make" us better. That's something we can only do ourselves.
-The chase seen through the Reevers and the Alliance ships was insane. I'm not really sure how Serenity got from Miranda to one of the central planets so fast, but still, very, very cool. "I'm a leaf on the wind." RIP Wash.
-I like that Serenity is upping the stakes. That it isn't just "a job" anymore, now the job means something.

-Kaylee and Simon's goodbye was just great, and so Joss. "You mean to say...sex? To hell with this. I'm gonna live!"
-I liked the final fight between Mal and the assassin. Very epic. Not really sure how Mal recovered so fast from that nerve punch though. However, making the operative watch the video from Miranda was cool.
-Thought for sure Simon was dead. River's last 15 minutes of this movie just owned. Seriously, everything she did was incredible. And was I the only one who noticed the pretty striking resemblance to Buffy S3 "Anne" with that axe, when the camera cuts up to her face?
-I like that they left it open-ended, with room for more Firefly if it ever gets picked up. Mal's final speech to River seemed like Joss talking to the audience. You have to do what you love.
Final Thoughts:
I really, really enjoyed the movie. It was fun seeing the series on the big screen. The action was great and Joss really succeeded in creating an awesome bad guy. He wasn't just cookie-cutter assassin by any means. However, the third act felt a little rushed. I thought it built and flowed really well right through to the reveal on Miranda, and I loved all of that, but after that everything just sort of came together pretty instantly. Like, they jumped from Miranda to the next planet pretty fast. And Mal and the operative at the end took some pretty massive hits against one another, like bone-crippling shots, and they both walked away pretty easily. Not really sure how that happened. Also, Serenity got basically destroyed in that landing and then was just repaired.
One thing I really liked was the attempt to wrap up the biggest and best mysteries of the series, as while it's always there, the chances of more Firefly are slipping away. Finding out about the Reevers and connecting them so well with River was very cool. Having Jayne, who didn't have as large a role in the movie as I would have liked, be the first to side with Mal heading into the third act was a cool piece of character development. And of course, River just stole this movie.
But those flaws aside, the ending action scenes were just incredible. River fighting waves of Reevers, Wash flying Serenity through everything in the galaxy, Jayne and Zoe holding the line against the Reevers, Mal's battle with the operative, all of it was awesome. Very good movie.
Thoughts on the series:
I really enjoyed the re-watch. There wasn't a single episode that I disliked or was bored by. It ended well with the movie, and the back nine of the season was just awesome. It really heated up well. The natural chemistry the cast had, pretty much right from the beginning, was just amazing.
I think that my favorite character was Jayne. This was one of the rare, rare series that I really enjoyed and where the main character wasn't my favorite. I liked Mal a lot, and both he and Nathan Fillion filled the role beautifully. Jayne though was just hilarious. He was almost the perfect supporting character. By the end of the series and the movie, River was a close second.
Firefly is one of my favorite T.V. shows, but at the same time I can see why it didn't take off on a larger scale. You have to be a big fan of Joss' humor and his writing style, and while I don't really understand why, I know that some aren't. Space cowboys in the future is also a little tough to wrap your head around if you don't approach the series with an open mind. Still, it's sad that there wasn't more than one season and a movie. I already miss it!

Evil, evil, evil bad guy. Book dies. 🙁 Which although sad is nothing compared to what he's done to everyone that's helped the crew in the past, including loads of innocents. Especially children.
Now to make an attempt to fly through reaver territory. Gutsy or just plain stupid? Leave it to Mal to make the difficult decisions.

I was a bit disappointed that we didn't have more of Shephard Book, but other than that I loved the entire thing.
When Jayne is playing the guitar at the campfire, is that The Ballad of Jayne we hear, or the Firefly theme?

I don't have surround sound but I do have a bigger TV than 80 inches, so yeah, pretty awesome. A friend of mine & I have been toying around with chairing a Can't Stop the Serenity Screening next summer, and now I really might do it just even to see it on the big screen!
I was a bit disappointed that we didn't have more of Shephard Book, but other than that I loved the entire thing.
When Jayne is playing the guitar at the campfire, is that The Ballad of Jayne we hear, or the Firefly theme?

So did Simon know all along that River was a weapon or are they rewriting history?
Kinda brutal seeing Mal throw that guy ti the reevers, even if he didn't do it with malice and shot the guy to save him the horrific death.
Again, why aren't they using River to fight?
Ohhh Mal sure is extra angry when he is missing Inara.
Kaylee sticking up to Mal is great!

River's dream reminded me a little of the dream Buffy had about the first slayer.

The show was slow to grow on me but I ended up really liking it and wishing there was more. I really feel like they could have told do much more story if given the chance.

I would be tempted to say that we've seen the last of any live action "Firefly" or a "Serenity 2," except for the history of another cult classic science fiction series, "Star Trek," Years after the series ended, "Star Trek: The Motion Picture" was made and barely managed to make a profit, pretty much like "Serenity's" performance. It wasn't until "The Wrath Of Kahn," that the "Star Trek" movie franchise really got going well. "Serenity" could do the same thing with a sequel, assuming that the actors could be assembled once more for long enough to make the show.
That's assuming, of course, that Joss can break away from his "Avenger" movies for long enough to do it.

That is my only (well, second) complaint about the movie. It makes it seem that Simon knew a lot more about what happened to River than he let on in the tv series.
They're ok. Except A Shepherd's Tale- that was brilliant!!

agree with Vision Girl, comics are pretty good, but A Shepherds Tale is amazing, I would recommend it for anyone

Well, I finally watched the movie while [MENTION=8885]nightshade[/MENTION] and @_937 were visiting. I didn't have computer in hand, so my general thoughts:
-Do not watch this movie on a BlueRay player.
-Not enough Inara
-Stupid Joss killed off two of my favorite characters
-I am SO glad the Alliance got what's coming to them.
-Good storyline about why you shouldn't blindly follow any one person/theory without thorough research.
-That last funeral scene was just heart-wrenching.
-Simon and Kaylee finally get together! YAY!
-River found her purpose. And it was epic.
-Glad to find out the story behind the reavers. it never quite made sense to me.
-I wish we had heard about Shepherd's past life, just because I'm curious!
Since I'm watching S7 of Buffy now, I see parallels between Buffy and Mal. They are leaders; they make hard decisions; they know not everyone will make it but they have to keep fighting. I really did love the series and the characters. the overall cast on this show has more chemistry than any other one I've seen, I think. Glad I watched!!

It's not totally satisfying but at least better than nothing.
The chemistry between the cast is awesome both on and off screen. How they all (or most of them) still keep in touch and hang out give me lots of fuzzy feelings. I know it doesn't matter as to the quality of the show but things like that makes me like the show even more.
