Episode Discussion: First and Last Episodes

We've got to get something going on in here....let's get talking.

I was thinking of comparing season ones "City Of" with season fives "Not Fade Away"

What do yoo guys think? How has the storyline changes? How about the characters?

 

[Angel's vision]

The Characters changed alot since City of, Angel became more sure of where his place in the world is, whereas before he didn't know what his purpose was, till he came across the shanshu scroll and meeting Doyle, Gunn became less angry Wes more confident, The story lines changed from being "film Noir" (Reading Angel;the book focasing on the academic side to Angel stated this)to having a more family setting,I.E they centred on the gang more i noticed, and the scroll was more or less fullfilled as in the comming darkness,The plagues, (season four's Habeas Corpses)and an appocalyptic battle(Not fade away)
The only thing that puzzles me is why have the writers left out the children, from Blind date, were they not meant to play a role in the comming battles?Angel's first battle was in an Ally, His last battle was in an Ally.

I Honestly agree the Characters Developed each in their own way over the course of the series they each kinda lost themselves at one point as well.. IE) Cordelia becomming a higherbeing, Wesley Kidnapping Connor, Gunn becomming lawyer boy?
Though they all lost themselves at one point or another they all seemed to have bounced back and fought to get things back in order and the characters were so believable... None of them really having any special powers at first and even when Cordelia had started with the visionthing. Over time the writters made it kind of believeable.

As for the storyline, I have to say i enjoyed the earlier episodes more... There was more humor although i agree with Angel's Vision, as the show continued it became more family centered, everyone grew closer, though season 4 was kinda slow, The Cordelia storyline didn't really do much for me... Though the episode 'Your Welcome' was brilliant.

i really liked how the show progressed over the 5 years, even though almost everybody ended up exactly where they started. Angel, fighting for the light, Gunn fighting vamps, Wesley using his Watcher knowledge to fight Vail, Illyria becoming Fred. Spike was the only one to be completly different to his first appearence in Angel WAY back in 'In the Dark'
i liked tha fact that, on his own show, Angel's first fight was in an alley, and so was his last...well, actually his first APPEARENCE to us fans was in an alley, back in WTTH, which is interesting.
i agree with everyone when they say they liked that the show became more family centered, and even thoguh i enjoyed S4, mostly 'cause of Connor, i didn't like Cordy's descent into evil. i thought that destroyed a character that i had grown to love deeply. but i was glad for 'You're Welcome' for the little Cangel moments, even though they did end up killing her off.
i loved that fact that Connor finally accepted Angel as his father. the scene at the elevator in 'Origins' is one of my fave scenes ever. and when he came back to help Angel in 'NFA' i was bawling like a baby!
compared to 'City of...' which was confusing and purposefully misdirecting, showing us exactly how the charcters were feeling, 'NFA' had a clear purpose, they all knew what they were doing, and they did it without question, even though they knew that they were probably going to die.

It really did show that they were right back where they started. And with Spike, he couldn't really go back to what he started as... because he had a soul....
