Question Episode to get someone interested

I find that I can't really get into that many genre shows after Buffy and Angel. I mean, I tried with Grimm and VD, but I gave up on them pretty quickly.
Even Tru Blood I think was extremely overrated and went downhill after S2.

So Buffy and Angel didn't do it first, but they did it best... Wait, that came out wrong. 🙂
 
UIn film there was Lost Boys ('86) and Interview With the Vampire ('94). So that was it for film. TV had a bit like Forever Knight and a couple of other minor bits. But I think Buffy The Vampire Slayer put vampires on the map in a mainstream context.

I contend that The Vampire Diaries, True Blood, basically any supernatural/drama show from the last 10 years is influenced by Buffy.

On a slightly separate note people should check out a British vampire mini series called Ultraviolet. It's 1998 so post-Buffy but still worth a look.

I tell people to start from the beginning and wait until season 2 before quitting. If they don't like it by season 2 then they probably won't like the rest. I started off season 3 with Faith, Hope, Trick and was hooked immediately. I think by now people have some sort of meta knowledge about Buffy. Before I went back to watch season 2 I already knew Angel went evil from sleeping with Buffy but I was still shocked/surprised and sad when it all unfolded.

There's a lot of sci-fi/fantasy/supernatural shows that take from Buffy. Some do it better than others. I really enjoyed the first 5 seasons of Supernatural it has the Monster of the Week theme that I like. Grimm I just can't get into, I find it boring and confusing and just don't care. The only reason I started to watch tVD was because it had the chick from Degrassi, but I didn't make it past the first few episodes. Sleepy Hollow is okay but I LOVE Once Upon A Time. It has a great explanation of werewolves that I think can apply to the Buffy mythos.
 
I tried Vampire Diaries when it started (despite the fact that I hated the books - to be fair, the tv series is better than the books). I found it overly melodramatic. I like how Buffy uses humour. There's no humour in Vampire Diaries, it's all just "you lied to me!" and "how can I ever trust you!" etc etc Damon was kind of fun but those slutty bad boy characters always seem to get ruined once they fall in love and I could see that coming.

True Blood? I really enjoyed season one, but after season 2 it all got a bit too daft. So I gave that up too.

I've pushed my way through 5 seasons of Supernatural. I don't know why I never got hooked. I really love the funny episodes. I think it just takes itself a bit too seriously. That whole God vs The Devil bit wasn't really a hit with me either. Maybe it's because I'm an atheist, maybe it's because I just prefer Big Foot hunts, I just found the angels, demons and bible stories a total bore.

Walking Dead? LOVE IT! It's not about hot people giving each other sultry looks while agonising over trust issues and tossing in a whole lot of mindless shagging.
Walking Dead has great character development and is full of good dialogue, action, suspense & horror, relationships that happen naturally, not just for ratings - it rocks!
 
Maybe its to do with the sorce material?

I've read of couple of the books Tru Blood is based on 😱, and they're pretty darn poor.

The Walking Dead is a rich, layered, complex, graphic novel, and the show sticks pretty close to those roots considering.🙂
 
I think you'd be doing them a bit of a disservice starting someone anywhere other than at the beginning. If someone has managed to avoid Buffy completely so far then they'd have the opportunity to watch it all the way through free from spoilers. It would be amazing to have that chance. There's plenty to love about Season 1 anyway!
 
I think it kind of depends who you're showing it to. I've only sat down with one person and made them watch (My dad) and i knew he thought the show was not his thing.

I started him with Hush and A New Man which he loved. He realised the show was actually really good and funny and kind of creepy. He then went back and started from the beginning (the high school years are actually his favourite).

But it really depends. If i thought someone had more patience, i would tell them to push through season 1 until they got to the greatness of season 2.
