7.4 - HELP
As Buffy begins her job as school counselor, a student grows convinced she's about to die.
Inside a funeral home, Buffy, Xander and Dawn emerge from coffins after the staff of morticians goes home for the night. Buffy tells her friends that she's worried about her first day as counselor at the high school. Their attention soon turns to a woman's corpse. The gang is suspicious about the way she died"¦and think she may be a vampire. Suddenly, the woman's eyes pop open. A brief struggle ensues, and Buffy stakes her. As Buffy's first day at counseling gets underway, she meets with Amanda, a shy girl; Matthew, a cute kid who's new at school; and Tomas, a jaded-looking Latino boy. After Buffy suggests to Amanda that she stick up for herself more, Amanda returns and relays word she jumped a bully in the school parking lot and slammed his face into the pavement. Buffy is horrified.
Later, Willow makes her way through a cemetery, where she locates Tara's tombstone. Willow reaches out and touches the stone, then takes some pebbles from the ground and puts them on the gravestone. Buffy meets with another student, Peter Nichols, a good-looking, rich, confident kid. It quickly grows apparent that Peter came to see Buffy so he could get out of biology class. But he grows bored and decides to return. Meanwhile, at an espresso pump, Anya strikes up a conversation with a sad woman named Lulu, who describes how her boyfriend of six years forgot her birthday. While attempting to get Lulu to make a vengeance wish, she inadvertently cheers her up. Lulu gets up from the table and leaves. Anya realizes she failed to get what she wanted.
Back at school, Buffy meets with Cassie, a blonde girl with haunting eyes. Cassie tells Buffy that she will die on Friday. Buffy tries prying more information out of Cassie, who remains elusive but confirms she has no intention of harming herself. She tells Buffy she just knows that her time is growing near. She also tells her that her death involves coins, and Buffy going underground. Before Cassie leaves, she tells Buffy to wear a sweater over her shirt so it doesn't get stained. Buffy relays word of Cassie's case to Principal Wood, who tells her that the best they can do is inform teachers and search lockers. But it's impossible to predict what will happen. As Buffy bumps up against the edge of Wood's desk, she spills coffee on herself. Buffy sends Dawn on a fact-finding mission, hoping to learn more about Cassie's personal life. She approaches Cassie as she converses with a boy named Mike Warburton, who asks Cassie out to the upcoming Winter Formal. But when Cassie realizes Dawn is Buffy's sister, she grows distant"¦and tells her she won't be going to the Winter Formal because she won't be around that night.
The gang convenes to discuss Cassie. An Internet search turns up Cassie's Web site, which is filled with poems related to death. Dawn, meanwhile, grows convinced that Mike Warburton is behind the girl's troubles. A short time later, Willow discovers evidence that shows Cassie's father has a history of alcohol abuse. Buffy and Xander approach Mr. Newton and question him about his drinking. Before Buffy leaves, she warns Mr. Newton that she won't let anything happen to Cassie. When Buffy and Xander exit the Newton house, Cassie emerges from the shadows and tells them her father has nothing to do with her prediction. She remains convinced that something is going to kill her on Friday. Buffy goes to the school basement, where she asks Spike for his help. Spike, however, is in great pain"¦and cannot shed light on the case.
As the fight continues, Peter picks up the meat cleaver and heads toward Cassie. As she continues battling the demon, Buffy fends off Peter as well. Spike appears and joins the fight, holding Peter at bay while Buffy incinerates the demon using a torch. As Buffy leads Cassie away, she accidentally triggers a booby-trapped door. Luckily, she stops a crossbow arrow from impaling Cassie just in the nick of time. Shortly thereafter, Cassie touches her heart and collapses. Later, the gang gathers at Buffy's house, where they discuss Cassie's death. It turns out that she had a hole in her heart, which she was completely unaware of. Yet, somehow, Cassie just knew she was about to die.
7.5 - SELFLESS
When Anya summons forth a giant spider demon to kill a large group of fraternity brothers, Buffy realizes she must kill Anya before she strikes again.
As Dawn gives Willow some "advice" about college life, Buffy and Xander enter, carrying a dresser between them. Willow's room inside the Summers' home is slowly coming together, a sign that she is settling in. The topic of conversation shifts to Anya, and Xander's concern about her. But he remains confident that she is turning away from her darker, vengeance demon-side. Meanwhile, inside a fraternity room, Anya crouches in a corner, surrounded by the blood-soaked bodies of fraternity boys who've had their hearts ripped out. Anya whispers to herself, "What have I done?" In flashback, inside a Viking house, Anya tends to Olaf, and the couple speak of bunnies, mead, trolls and their relationship.
In the present day, Buffy visits Spike in the school basement. Convinced he's slowly going mad, Buffy urges him to leave the school before it's too late. At the college, Willow bumps into Anya as she leaves the fraternity house. Willow notices some blood on the back of Anya's hand and decides to investigate further. She enters the frat house and discovers the bodies of the murdered frat boys. She also encounters a young woman, Rachel, who had been the victim of a fraternity prank. She recounts how she wished the frat boys knew what it was like to have their hearts ripped out"¦and a short time later, a giant spider appeared and fulfilled her wish. Willow asks Rachel where the spider went"¦unaware that the creature is crawling on the ceiling above her. In flashback, Viking villagers attack the now troll-like Olaf, who wields a giant hammer. D'Hoffryn appears and asks Anya what prompted the spell she placed on Olaf. Anya explains that she grew tired of Olaf's interest in a bar matron. Sensing that Anya's talents aren't fully appreciated, D'Hoffryn offers Anya the opportunity to join her family of vengeance demons.
In the present day, Willow uses a spell to shield herself and Rachel from the attacking spider, which eventually crashes through a window. Willow then contacts Buffy by phone and explains that a giant spider- demon is on the loose. Meanwhile, Hallie congratulates Anya on a job well done. But Anya can't help but be disturbed by the frat boy killings, as the deaths were enormously gruesome. Hallie comforts her. The conversation comes to an abrupt end when Willow enters the room. Hallie, sensing she's not needed, teleports herself away. Willow then tells Anya she's there to help her. Anya, uncertain, states that she's a vengeance demon, and the frat boys got what they deserved.
Buffy and Xander roam a wooded area in search of the demon spider. Xander looks up into the trees, and suddenly, a slimy web hits him in the face. Buffy knocks him out of the way and engages the spider demon when it drops from the trees. The thing disappears temporarily, and as Buffy and Xander converse, Buffy suddenly swings her axe straight up in the air. The spider demon comes crashing to the ground. Later, Buffy realizes Willow never told her that Anya was responsible for summoning the spider demon because it means she must kill Anya. In St. Petersburg, Russia, in the year 1905, Anya and Hallie converse as an enormous revolutionary battle rages around them. Anya concludes that there's a whole world filled with women who need her help. While attempting to convince Buffy that there must be another way of dealing with Anya (instead of killing her), he realizes he's still in love. Buffy tells Xander that if he believes there's another answer, he must find it. And quickly. She then finds a broadsword and sets out to find Anya. Willow, however, stays behind and, using a talisman, summons forth D'Hoffryn. Willow tells the demon she wants to discuss Anya.
Xander makes his way to the fraternity, where he finds Anya. A short time later, Buffy arrives, sword in hand. Anya morphs into demon-face, and a battle ensues. As Anya rushes forward, Buffy parries"¦and stabs Anya through the heart. In Sunnydale, in the year 2001, Anya and Xander break into song and profess their love for one another as the wedding day approaches. In the present day, Anya regains consciousness"¦and tells Buffy it will take much more than a sword to kill her. Another fight ensues, only this time, Xander tackles Buffy before she can bring down the sword once more. D'Hoffryn suddenly materializes in a blinding flash of light. Anya tells D'Hoffryn she wants to undo the deaths of the frat boys. In order for this to be done, however, something must be sacrificed in return. Anya realizes that in order for her request to be granted, she must die. She asks D'Hoffryn to carry out her wish nonetheless. D'Hoffryn claps his hands together"¦and Hallie appears in the flash of light. D'Hoffryn then kills Hallie. Anya is shocked. D'Hoffryn then states, "Never go for te kill when you can go for the pain." Meaning, it will hurt Anya more knowing her friend is dead. D'Hoffryn then kicks Anya out of the vengeance demon family. Anya then rushes out of the frat house, telling Xander she just wants to be left alone.
