So Neil Cross, the creator of Luthor, has been hired to write the reboot for Escape from New York. Escape from LA was horrible so I don't care.

But.. since Neil Cross is writing it how do you feel about Idris Elba playing Snake Plissken? I can see it. I think I'd rather him play Snake than Bond actually. Nothing has been mentioned formally about Elba in the role but it would be dream casting almost. He can do that low, soft spoken gravelly voice that Kurt Russell did to perfection in the movie.

Escape from New York reboot? yay or nay?
Starring Idris Elba? yay or nay?

And heck, since they are rebooting Big Trouble in Little China which epic Kurt Russell movie are you more excited to see rebooted? Big Trouble starring Dwayne Johnson or Escape starring (possibly) Idris Elba?
 
Meh. If they want to do it. It's pretty much guaranteed to be less good than the original, unless they don't take themselves seriously and make it trashy and cheesy in the right kind of way. I'll keep an open mind, but... yeah. But maybe I'm wrong and it would work as a serious post apocalyptic action film. The premise is simple and there's a lot of stuff you can do with it. And Elba would be a pretty cool choice, to be honest.

Big Trouble in Little China, on the other hand, is one of my favorite movies of all time. There's almost no way this going to work out. It's probably going to be way to dark and gritty. This isn't one of these "don't mess with my childhood" kind of things for me, but I don't see the point of remaking a perfect movie. This is The Godfather of cheesy 80s action films.

To answer your question: Escape: Meh. Big Trouble: Nay.
 
Urgh, their rebooting the wrong one. Escape From New York was iconic and brilliant. Re-do the LA one.

And their rebooting Big Truoble In Little China'? I think I just died a little inside. They'll turn it into a generic Kung-Fu action flick and miss the point of it.
 
Say what now?! Nay, nay and freaking nay! I love all those John Carpenter/Kurt Russell movies

Big Trouble being remade with the Rock makes me want to cry a little. I had to look up who Idris was actually 😉 Since I didn't really know him, I don't have an opinion on him specifically playing Snake, but there should be no new Snake at all imo. Leave it the hell alone!
 
No one will be able to capture the atmosphere in John Carpenter's films with a reboot, and that is mostly because it won't have John Carpenter's signature music all over it. *headbutts a keyboard*

I think there is a VERY good chance Escape might have John Carpenter's signature music as he is the executive producer for it.

Why reboot anything at all? There are plenty of big cities all over the world that could be used as the location, and no reason whatsoever for Snake Pliskin to have to be involved in any of them. Surely, he wasn't supposed to be the only super bad ass in that entire universe. I don't know who Idris Elba is, but, surely, he would be more comfortable creating his own, unique character than being constantly compared to the person who defined another one.

As for "Big Trouble In Little China," again, Russell created the character, so why should anyone else want to be just "that other guy who tried to play the part?" Ask Jeff Bridges, sometime, just how hard it was to play Rooster Cogburn and NOT be compared to John Wayne.

Hollywood, and the whole entertainment industry, needs to start coming up with some original ideas for a change.

And the fact Carpenter is still on board. It could work out well. Especially after Beasts and the reception that is getting.
 
A new version of Escape from New York can most likely be a pretty good movie with some new spectacular effects.
I have no problem with that. Will probably watch it.

Big trouble in little china is a different kind of movie though.
It has a very special tone and feeling that I personally find absolutely brilliant.
I really can't see how they will be able to make a new version that manage to keep that special thing, whatever it is, that the original movie has.

I've no opinion about Idris Elba.
A quick check tells that I've seen a couple of movies with him but I can't say that I remember him.
