Ethan Hawke's Born to Be Blue

FC Films released a trailer on Monday for Born to Be Blue, which stars Ethan Hawke as legendary jazz trumpeter Chet Baker.

Written and directed by Robert Budreau, the film follows the musician late in his life, after years of fame and drug abuse have taken their toll. He stages a comeback, hoping to regain the success he first found when he became a icon in the 1950s.

The trailer previews Hawke's take on the tumultuous jazz legend — including him singing the now-classic "My Funny Valentine" — as well as the roles played by Carmen Ejogo and Callum Keith Rennie.

Born to Be Blue, a mix of factual and fictional events, hits theaters on March 25 and VOD on March 31.​

Wow, looks pretty good. He does actually pull off an older Chet Baker quite well, lookswise. I'll watch just about anything with Ethan Hawke in it (even Alive!), he's a superb actor.

This was actually filmed near where I live. Ethan Hawke wasn't too thrilled about it, not that I blame him. Sudbury isn't very glamorous.

Hawke wasn't exactly thrilled with Sudbury

Actor Ethan Hawke wasn't singing Sudbury's praises in a recent interview with eTalk at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF).

The actor was in the Nickel City during some chilly months for the filming of Born to be Blue, which will be screened during Cinéfest on Sept. 26 .

In his interview, Hawke explained that shooting in Northern Ontario was a little unexpected and that he had high hopes of some potential sites for the movie's filming.

“When you do a Chet Baker movie you want to go to Paris, you want to go to L.A., you want to go into the jazz clubs in New York, you don't really want to go to Sudbury, it's not where I imagined shooting the movie,” said Hawke.

To his credit, the actor did mention his affinity for Canada, and that he owns a place in Nova Scotia that he spends time at during the summer, but that he was caught off guard by the location selection.

“I think that (director) Robert (Boudreau) tricked me a little bit when he said we were shooting in Toronto and then all of a sudden the car keeps going and this is far from Toronto,” said Hawke

Can't really blame him! Being told you are filming in Toronto and then going all the way up to Sudbury. I think it would piss a lot of people off.

Now that the Canadian dollar is becoming the Canadian peso, a lot more movies are going to be made here. "A Home at the End of the World" was partially filmed on a street where I walk the dog every Monday and Friday.
