Ethical question

trustno1: the whole debate does involve religion, even if it is only in an indirect way. The concept of right or wrong that lead people to think abortion is wrong is directly derived from religious, by that I mean catholic-christian-whatever/you/wanna/call/it morality.

I know it does go back to religious roots, but the point of ethics is to throw out religious beliefs and focus on the "right" or "wrong" thing to do. (or as our teacher told us, don't know if it's true or not, if someone took ethics and knows otherwise, please correct me) Not focus on what your religion, no matter what it maybe would want you to do.

Throwing religion away, is just to leave aside your beliefs, but your moral is still present. "Right" and "Wrong" are 100% moral terms, if your moral comes from religious teachings, then your concepts of right and wrong are completely derived from your religion.

When just reading that first part I picked the first one, and I can see how it relates to abortion if some of you don't get it, maybe I can explain. The kidnap probably represents if you weren't expecting it, like rape, and then you find yourself connected to another life that's depending on you, the baby, and if you cut the cord, you're responsible for the death even if you didn't choose to be connected in the first place. Personally if I was in that situation I would not choose an abortion cause I would think about it forever after, but in that kind of situation I don't know if it would be wrong or not. I think some situations warrant that kind of decision, like in the case of death.

I have to disagree with the fact that right and wrong comes completely from your religion, if indeed you are religious. There are lots of people with different opinions on such issues as abortion within the same denominations. Its basically based on our own personal values, but influenced by our religious teachings. At least for those of us who are able to think for ourselves.

Not to worry TN1. I'm not offended by you. I'm offended for you, and here's why...

I remain convinced you are being scammed.

You tell me this question is meant to parallel the abortion question when you say

Now the answer to this scenario says that if you choose a, you are against abortion. if you choose b, you aren't against it.

So why don't they just ask the question, "Is it right or wrong to get an abortion?". I'll tell you why.

The actual abortion question is a complex one. Many different people have many different answers. The way the question you were asked is presented, it's designed to lead you to respond in a particular manner. It wants you to say it would be wrong to kill the famous violinist.

Here's the problem. Abortion isn't about killing a famous violinist. The central question when considering the ethics of abortion is the one of human life. Is the fetus a human life at the time of the abortion?

You can't truthfully consider the ethics of abortion without considering that question. Yet they want you to. Why?

It's because they want you to give a specific response to the question. They want you to say it would be wrong to sever the cord, and kill the famous violinist.

Again I ask why does it have to be a famous violinist? You tell me:

The point of the violinist was to say that how do you not know that you're "unborn" child doesn't become someone famous? like a violinist, the next Martin Luther King,

I disagree. The model isn't designed to present you with the possibility a fetus could become the people you mentioned. It is designed with the specific intent of getting a visceral reaction from you. It doesn't tell you your fetus could become someone important. The model says it is someone important. If it truthfully wanted you to consider the ethical dillemas involved in considering an abortion it would say something like "You are attached to a comatose individual who you are told may die of a debilitating disease, or may survive to enjoy all the possibilities of a human life." They would also say remaining attached might endanger your life.

They don't say that. They remove all the complexity of the question. They say if you cut the cord, you kill an important person. They're not asking you if it's right or wrong. They're telling you it's wrong.

Now... Where did I get the "Religion" idea from? Simple. That's who does stuff like this; sneaking misleading propaganda into a school curriculum designed to endoctrinate pliable minds into their way of thinking. I gave you some examples of how they've done this sort of thing in the past.

It's possible I'm incorrect. It's possible your teacher was looking for questions on ethics he could discuss, and he stumbled on this one. Maybe it was late at night, and he copied and pasted it into his lesson plan off some Holy Roller site he accidentally Googled, without really reading the article.. It's also possible he knows exactly what he's doing, and he drops these little nuggets in from time to time subtly, never enough to attract attention and get himself into trouble, just enough to get a few kids thinking like he does.

Can you ask your teacher where he found this question. I'd love to email it to a few pro-choice organizations, and ask them if they think this type of question should be part a high-school lesson plan.

I think i would have killed him, i mean it's not like he asked me, and how do i really know he needs to live off of me, maybe it's just some twisted sex game? LOL

But then i suppose i still would be a little guilty if i killed him.

Tough question, I think it depends on the guy, if I like him he lives, if I don't, he dies.

I choose B.
i'm not guilty of killing him the moron who attached him to me without explaining, asking or considering the consequences is the one responsible for his death.

I don't know him, i don't like him, he hijaked me and i'm resentful....

I'd go with C) drag myself and my violinist and our kidney-connector to the nearest hospital and demand that they unhook him and get him his own damn kidney.

what kind of assignement is that? lol
my assignment in ethics was:

if you worked in a clinic where the surgeon perfomed (illegaly) genital mutilations on the demand of patients, would you agree to it or not?

it was a really hard question to devellop.. very complex situation..
cos when you think about it, the people who want to do it will go somewhere else if the surgeon doesnt want to do it... and the other place they might go might not be as safe for the "mutilee" as it would be in a clinic..
do you know whatta mean? lol
well, i did a whole dissertation on it, with comparisons to kant and Hume's ethics and stuff

lol
as for the violinist (or w-e!! lol) screw him i have other things to do 😉 lol

That was my initial thought...although I don't think that was one of the options 😛

I choose A...

I would never agree to help someone in this forced situation. By the way, you can get a kidney transplant if yours isn't fully functional. So I would tell the violinist to go to the nearest hospital if he was so eager to survive. Sharing a kidney for a year would never be the cure for his problem.
As for the abortion issue, I must say that this example is too manipulative to be worthy of such serious discussion.

Can I ask if I do A, do I die? Cause that was my initial thought and I decided B... but now I think you dont and i'll chose A. although it qould get a tad boring just sitting day and night for a year!

lol...that violinist better be a hot chick...cause if it wasn't...the cord is gone...lol...

if it is...we gonna have some fun...lol...that was horrible...
