I got this cd earlier this week and was wondering who else has it and what they thought.

I should mention before giving my opinion that I'm a massive Evanescence fan and have been since they first broke here in the UK. Also, being borderline obsessed with the gorgeous Amy Lee I have to admit that I find it hard to give a fair critique...

That said, this new album absolutely rocks! My first thought was just how much they have grown as a band since releasing Fallen in 2003. For a debut album, Fallen was as close to perfection as you could have hoped. Not since Pearl Jam released Ten have a band started out with such an amazing first release. I actually was worried that this would go against them though. The second album is always hard but a multi-platinum album is almost impossible to improve on.

In a way I don't look at The Open Door as an improvement so much as a maturing of the band and the music they have created. The absence of Ben Moody is obvious but not in the bad way that many had predicted. Amy has shown that she can easily match anything Ben could create and maybe even top it (which is saying something because Ben Moody is a hell of a song writer).

The whole album is excellent but stand out tracks for me include Lithium, Snow White Queen, Lacrymosa, Like You and the first single, Call Me When You're Sober.

Any other Evanescence/Amy Lee obsessives around? 😉

Ha-I knew before I looked that you'd started this thread!
I just got the album yesterday and I am obsessed with Lithium. It is a very interesting song. I like the sound of this album. The first one seemed prettier, not that it was bad, I liked the first album a lot. This one just seemed a bit dark-good dark, hard...but not abandoning to eerie softness of the last album.
I don't know, I mean I just got it yesterday, but I am loving it A LOT. Thanks to MR for making me want to know more about it.

Evanescence karma ;)
ooh, where's Mesektet Ra? this thread is just calling out for her opinion!! lol
i'm a big Evanescence fan, but i haven't gotten around to getting the new album yet. love the first single though, and i'm hoping the rest of the album can live up to that track!

Don't worry. The rest of the album easily lives up to CMWYS
I love this album. I love anything Evanescense. Yay for Evanescense. Or something to that effect.

Congratulations on your 300 posts ;)
I did like their previous album but well their stuff is kinda samey. If you've heard one then you've heard them all.

Well, I had to take my sons cd (so I could listen to it)...ahhh the joys of being a parent...lol, I have to say that my favorite songs are Lacrymosa and Call Me When Your Sober. Amy Lee has one hell of an impressive voice!!! Her range and vocal ability are awesome. To me their cd tells a story from beginning to end if you listen carefully.

You're a cool mom. I wish my mom was this cool.
I like the album as a whole (GO LITHIUM!) but I can't stand CMWYS. It's not the tune or Amy Lee's vocals (which are impressive, I have to admit) but the whole 'tone' of the song. I'm sure they didn't plan the release of the single to coincide with what's-his-name's rehab, but it smacks of them making fun of (and money from) his misfortune. And yeah, yeah....I know she didn't mean it that way.....it's obviously cathartic. It just rubs me the wrong way.

Predictable, ain't I! :D

CMWYS is definitely Amy's way of getting that relationship out of her system. In fact she has said so in most of the interviews where the question was raised. The timing of him going into rehab was a shame but it was more about her putting him behind her than having a dig at him.

Most of Amy's songs relate to something in her life because that is her way of dealing. You probably know this but the track Hello from Fallen was a song she wrote for her sister who died when she was very young. She never performs that track on stage because she can't deal with how it makes her feel.

A huge  for this album, but then I'm biased as I'm a big fan of Evanescence. 🙂

Only trouble is, when there is only one CD of it in the house, and your 3 and a half year old daughter loves them, along with her 4 brothers & their father, is actually getting hold of it to listen to!

My daughter loves CMWYS, and she's too cute when she's singing along to it! 😀

Oh yeah, and I realize that. I know, intellectually, that she didn't mean it as a way of poking fun at his misfortune. She doesn't strike me as the kind of person who would do something like that. It was just bad timing on the part of the record label and the whole thing rubbed me the wrong way.....that's actually MY problem, not Evanescence's.

I didn't know that about 'Hello,' thanks for telling me! She's truly an artist and they often use their art form as a coping mechanism.

Only just realised this, but Tourniquet is used in the argument that Evanescence is a Christian band, because apparently, it's about someone commiting suicide, and wondering whether she'll go to Heaven or Hell and begging forgiveness. Just a bit of interesting info for you.

Ok Point1 - Fallen Wasnt Their First Album Origin Was.
Point 2 - They Did Start As A Christian Rock Group And You Can Interpret All Their Lyrics In A Religious Way On Fallen.

I Love The New Album Though - Sacrifice Is Amazing.

Sacrifice is the best!
ARCANE YOU ARE MY LOVER. PLEASE, FOR THE LOVE OF GOD AND ALL THAT IS HOLY MARRY ME SO WE CAN MAKE SWEET EVANESCENCE LOVE TOGETHER.

That being said, I truly love the band and album itself.

First of all, Amy Lee is a truly talented artist. Her voice is nigh angelic. Also, the band itself is the epitome of me - their sound, and how they mesh like, seven different genres into one band. I love the tones of their songs and the dark, church/choirlike feel of a lot of their pre-Fallen stuff.

I can't really get into it right now, but The Open Door is album I dreamed it would be and more. I've never waited for and album more intensely than I waited for The Open Door, and I've never been more satisfied.

Also? 'Snow White Queen' makes me feel dirty.

On another quick note...

Point One: Origin was a demo.
Point Two: They were never a Christian rock group.
Point Three: The song is called 'Sweet Sacrifice'.

How could I refuse an offer like that? ;)

Actually...

Point 1 - Fallen was their first album, at least as far as the band is concerned anyway. Amy considers Origin as nothing more than a glorified demo.

Point 2 - Again according to Amy (and who are we to contradict her?), Evanescence were never EVER a christian rock group and that label was given to them by the media, based on a few supposedly religious undertones in their lyrics.

Truth is, if you look hard enough and interpret things in certain ways you can probably make any band seem like they are christian rockers. I tend to believe what the band themselves say! 😉
