Liaison
"I wish...I wish I knew what was going to happen...then maybe...maybe I would have made his last memories happy ones" Said Eve Adams. She stared out the window of her apartment. 6 years ago Eve was the Liaison to the Senior Partners of Wolfram and Hart. She'd had wealth, power, immortality, and she'd found true love. His name was Lindsey McDonald he was an ex lawyer at the firm. At the time everything seemed perfect, how things change so quickly.
The CEO at the time, Angel was a long time enemy of Lindsey's and the object of his plan which Eve helped execute. At the time she was looking forward to life, she'd had to give up her job as liaison for Lindsey but it had felt like a small price to pay. After Lindsey's plan went through everything would be better but Angel had other ideas. Lindsey had no chance against the vampire and after going into battle she found him dead, with two bullets in his chest. Revenge was pretty much her reason for living now.
Eve looked down at her stomach. Her other reason for living hurt too much to think about think about. The night when Lindsey was killed was supposed to be special. She was going to tell him she was pregnant after the fight. When the smoke cleared he should have been standing. When Angel had told her he wasn't coming back she'd wanted to stay in the crumbling Wolfram and Hart. She didn't have a reason for living until she thought about her baby. She couldn't destroy there child because they'd trusted the wrong person. She left L.A that night, the memories of what happened where to fresh in her brain to stay. She moved to Oklahoma, it was where Lindsey had been raised and made her feel closer to him.
"Mommy," a small voice called interrupting her thoughts. Eve turned to face her daughter and instantly regretted it. After all her thoughts on the past, looking at her brought up a new wave of pain. .
"Yes, Lindsey" she said. Lindsey would probably get mad if he found out that she'd given there female child the same name as him. But what he didn't know wouldn't hurt him, what he'd never know.
The child shrugged "Daddy said you were lonely."
Eve sucked in a breath, as much as she thought she'd matured in the last five years she couldn't deal with this.
Eve turned to the child and tried to hide the pain that crossed her face. Lindsey looked so much like her father that it hurt to look at her. She had the same dark hair and eyes, and the smile that made her melt when worn by the man she loved. But that man was gone, and the only thing she had left was her daughter, the beautiful thing created by their love for each other. Lindsey would hate her if he knew how upset she was by the sight of their daughter, so Eve pushed all thoughts of him out of her mind and forced a smile onto her face and held out her arms.
"Tell me what daddy said, baby." The little girl raced across the room, and into her mother's arms, and giggled as Eve picked her up and carried her to the couch, resting her on her lap.
"Daddy said you were lonely," Lindsey repeated. "he said you missed him so much that you cried. And he told me to tell you not to cry, that he was happy watching over us."
Eve sighed and forced away her tears. She didn't understand how Lindsey could believe that she was talking to her father, but the child never gave it up. It had started as soon as she had learned to talk, and every morning Lindsey came to her mother's room and told Eve that "˜daddy says he loves you.' Taking a deep breath, Eve realized that it was time she found out just where her daughter was getting this idea from.
"Lindsey, when daddy talks to you, what does he say?"
"He says he loves you," the girl said with a smile. "He says he always will."
"Did he say where he was?"
"Daddy's here."
Eve froze. "What?"
Lindsey pointed to a corner of the room. "He's always here. He sings me to sleep at night." The girl launched into song. "Pretty girl on every corner. Sunshine turns the sky to gold." She laughed. "He's singing with me. He says it's your favourite song."
Eve couldn't deal. She pushed her daughter off of her lap and launched herself to her feet. "How do you know that song?"
"Mommy? Mommy, what's wrong?" Lindsey grew frightened. "Why are you crying? He said you like that song."
"I do," eve whispered. But she didn't have any recordings of it in her home. The last time she had heard it was the day after Angel and the rest of them had rescued Lindsey from the Senior Partners holding dimension. There was only one way Lindsey would know the song, and that was if she really was talking to her father. Looking over to the corner her daughter had pointed at.
Eve chewed on her lower lip. "Is he still here?" she asked slowly. Lindsey nodded.
"Ask him who killed him." Eve had wanted to know that since the day she had found Lindsey's body. She knew it couldn't have been Angel. The vampire wouldn't have used anything like the hand gun that killed the love of her life. It had to be someone else.
"Who killed you daddy," little Lindsey asked, she seemed to wait for a response "he said it was Lorne, mommy who's Lorne?"
