And the fact they set it between Alien and Aliens. That's why so much of the imagery resembled both movies. Didn't much care for Alvarez's Evil Dead or Texas Chainsaw remake/reboots so when you factor everything into this I think it being trite and derivative is probably going to prove to be accurate. I would love to be disappointed, but... track record and history shows otherwise.

Is it set on the planet/settlement that Newt was from? Because that could have possibilities. I want to be pleasantly surprised by its quality and/or ideas but that's... unlikely.

I think that it captured some of the claustrophobia and disturbing body horror of the Raimi ones, but lacked the madness and the dark humour but overall yeah I found it underwhelming and that finale was...not good.
I didn't hate Don't Breathe, again a good example of single location horror. I'm guessing that's why he was chosen for this.

Never seen any Texas Chainsaw apart from the first one and the 2003 remake.

Nope. It's pretty much the premise of the first movie but basically with the crew of the second movie.
While scavenging the deep ends of a derelict space station, a group of young space colonizers come face to face with the most terrifying life form in the universe.

Don't Breathe was good.

This is just a straight re-make of the first one! Just with a station instead of a planet. Crap.

Still, maybe if I compare it to Prometheus or the Alien film that followed I can fool myself into lowered standards.

And they are saying that some things in this movie will be a tie-in to the prequel streaming series happening later this year. So...
Alien: Romulus happens (I believe) 20 years after Alien. The prequel series happens 20 years before Alien. There is probably a reason why they both went with a 20 year time.

is not nostalgia bait for a very similar shot in Aliens. When Weaver was getting off the elevator at the sub-levels looking for Newt. Basically same gun. Same posture. Pretty much an identical background. Only thing different is Weaver was wearing white and she's not.

There’s like an 80 year stretch between the movies. Weyland-Yutani is well aware of the Xenomorph and its capabilities prior to the events of Aliens, hence why they sent the colonists to LV-426.

Honestly if you were going to make another Alien movie, I don’t see what’s wrong with setting it then. Ellen is out of the picture, the Colonial Marines are completely unaware of the Xeno threat, and the only people who might know anything are the greedy corpos who are later going to send people directly to their deaths. If anything, this is probably the best time period for an Alien movie, especially one that looks more horror than action, a la Aliens.

What’s the point of even making a Coming Soon thread if all you’re going to do is just say “looks bad, don’t care” or “I already know this is gonna be garbage” on what gets posted in it.
 
While I agree media is more subpar than on par these days, I also agree that coming to talk about new media and having consistent posters be negative about it does make it difficult to want to continue to post here.

I think it’s important to remember you can criticize without being Uber negative, which is I think the point @Plasma was trying to make.

Constructively, I think it's somewhat limiting in terms of storytelling, given that the audience knows that the Xenomorphs remain unknown until Aliens. So we infer that no bugger is going to (or at least should) survive this film and whatever TV shows follow/precede it. Hard to invest in a bunch of 'about to be corpses'.

Also in basic terms the story is limited in how it could move the franchise forward and how to develop/expand future stories in the verse. Basically it can't/is going to be extremely hard to do that, and it's perfectly okay to be skeptical about the ability of any current crop of writers to do so.

For the record I hope I'm wrong and this will be a big improvement on the previous two installments.

Agree! I’m optimistic, given what we see here. Going back to horror, which was the best part of Covenant IMHO

I guess I’m interested to see what happens with the story. There are rumors that it’s
Ripley’s daughter,
which ties into that Isolation game that released a while ago.

If that’s the case, I’d definitely like to see the story there, since the character is mentioned in Aliens and we don’t get much more than that.
 
This looks interesting. Even though DC is a mess. Still to have Colin Farrell on board adds some weight to the series.

Thats 20 "new" movies coming out in the next few months. There could be more. I thought there were close to 30 originally.

Theater re-releases. My local one has been advertising Shrek 2 re-showings, and looking today I saw like 5-6 classic/older films being advertised

Too bad they won’t probably show movies like Escape from New York or Prince of Darkness. Those I’d go see in theaters
 
Oh great. Not only are they now squeezing IPs to death, making remakes and doing sequels, but they are now rereleasing the originals in cinemas?

Why not just put up a big sign. "Yes, we DO lack originality."?
