EXANA CYSS October 1581 - 1594

Exana had learnt that she had become the latest in a long line of Slayers. That was at the start of October 1581, thankfully though her mother (Judith) knew that so Exana could ask her mother what the secrets might be, as and when Exana became aware of them. Exana was more than a little perturbed as she had no concept about what being a slayer (the chosen one) entailed.

They were due to go to a wedding, once there Exana met a girl who she had previously met, together with that girl they had quickly become good friends. Needing to know more of those who were invading her dreams, Exana Cyss went to speak to a woman in the village who knew of secrets of the movement of plants. Feeling a bit nervous about asking such questions to the woman, Exana asked Hazel if she would to go with her.

Sensing it was a good opportunity to increase the strength of their friendship Hazel accepted the offer. Exana felt happier that she had another friend with her they went to see the woman, (Ashleigh). Exana told Ashleigh they were there to ask about what it meant to be a Slayer. Ashleigh withdrew a large metal pot from one of her cupboards, she put it on a small table and filled it with water, Ashleigh told Exana to ask that question to the surface of the water, feeling uneasy about what being a slayer meant she did.

Eventually a face appeared on the surface of the water, Ashleigh smiled to Exana, “You are lucky that does not happen to most people,” when the face spoke to Exana Ashleigh was stunned, “That has never happened before, who are you?” Ignoring her friend in order to get the answer she wanted Exana asked the face, “What does it mean to be a slayer?”

“The voice of the face asked Exana to explain what she was a slayer of?” Exana was embarrassed, she sheepishly grinned then said she was chosen to be a slayer of demons. The look of the face changed, “No you are not, you were chosen by the Powers That Be to rid the world of any and all demonic activity regardless of what demon you become aware of. “The type of demon may be specified from century to century. The Powers That Be may decide a slayer might be worthy to them.”

“And what if any, are any extra duties I might face?” asked Exana. The voice rose from the face in the water again. “The slayer is always a girl, she is known as the Chosen One, chosen by the Powers That Be.” “She has been given the strength to slay all manner of demons. The slayer will be granted the gift of increased ability in order to heal faster than normal humans, to hear at greater distances if needed, to not need to breath underwater as often as people normally do.

There are many more such qualities that will become evident in the battles to fight the demons.” Exana felt more at ease than she would when prior to a battle. Exana faced Ashleigh, “Should the surface of the water began to ripple from the middle then to the side, then back?” asked Exana. Ashleigh began to agree, “I think that will feel good for us both,” Exana heard a voice behind them. She looked to see her friend Hazel again.

Happy at what she had learnt yet glad to know that the ability to contact them was available. All was well until two weeks later as Exana's mother was suddenly woken from a dream by one of the powers that be from a pleasant dream she was having. Judith was very surprised that a figure from the Powers That Be woke her, saying that Exana was about to spend a few days with them.

Exana's mother relayed the message to Exana, “They said my daughter would be called away to be with them.” “Isn't that when the wedding will be?” asked Exana. Judith looked puzzled to her daughter. “If you think about it, they said I would be called away but not with them,” said Exana. Judith became puzzled but was then happier. “Listen mum they know that we will be spending some time together, they have now told you that they are aware of what we need to do together.”

In the morning of the day they were due to go to the wedding Exana asked her mother, “How do you do them.” Judith replied that she didn't know who the man her friend was going to marry, all Judith knew about the man was that he was an accomplished playwright. Exana's mother stated that she knew Anne (the bride) as they had been at school together. Going to the ceremony Exana saw her mother talking to another woman,

about to ask who the woman was Exana met and befriended that woman's daughter, neither of them knew the others name. Yet both of them hoped they could become friends, that it could be the start of their friendship. Exana had been born in the year 1565, as was the womans daughter. It was in the hours that followed that she and (Hazel) started to become friends then in the hours that followed then became the best of friends.

They had gone to the wedding to bear witness to the joining, the bride being Exana's mothers friend though noone knew much about the groom except that he was a playwright of some renowned. Just before the actual ceremony Exana felt so tired that in the hours after the ceremony she told her mother she needed to rest. Exana kept her word and went to the church entrance to lay back on the rocks of the entrance of the church.

Whilst there she spied the other girl. Exana happy at seeing her and that she was about the same age. Exana waved to the girl who returned the wave to her. Exana smiled but the girls mother saw Exana's reaction and she held her daughter back. Exana was unsure if the girls mother knew of a reason why she ought to keep her daughter away. Exana was dismayed by the girls mothers attitude. The girls were led away from each other by their mothers.

After going home in the wagon Exana's mother taught her how to become talented in the art of fine needlework. Exana quickly became quite competent, often sitting in the hay fields to make glorious pictures on taught white sheets, just as other friends of hers would do with paints. In the few years that followed Exana became well known for her delicate work with the needle, she would often sit in a field waiting until she found the right scene to look at.

It was during one of those times she that she got so despondent at finding she had nothing to do, and no pictures to sew. So she decided to walk to another vantage point. Exana kept looking forward further along the lane she was going. When she saw someone else on the lane, she recognised who it was, realising it was the girl Exana had waved to at the wedding.

The girl jumped away from the hedge that she was stood close to, she was collecting Blackcurrants from the hedge and ran to greet Exana, both girls smiled at meeting the other. “It has been a while since we last met,” stated Hazel. “Yes that was at the wedding we went to for the joining of Anne Hathaway and William Shakespeare,” said Exana.
“At the church in the village of Temple Grafton, it seems like a long time ago but it was only in the year 1582 like you said,” said Hazel.

Each of them asked the other, what could they have done at the same time, the girls laughed. Hazel smiled to Exana saying that she would probably soon be her new best friend. Smiling to her. “I hope and that we can bare our secrets to each other,” said Hazel. Exana smiled to Hazel and was about to reply when Hazel continued. “What I've done requires me to disclose such tales that would mean I'd face deadly consequences, although I feel you are just the right sort of person I can tell,” said Hazel.

“Rest easy,” said Exana, “my parents named me as they hoped I would continue in the family way of hunting and killing demons.” Exana bared a guilty grin before she continued. “Know this Hazel for I have found, fought and killed many many demons, my mother has told me that upper figures that be might watch over me always. Consequently I keep hoping that no person from the church will ever discover what I am,” said Exana.

“I am so glad to hear that, for I do believe we can be friends because I think I am becoming what many refer to as a witch,” said Hazel. She looked around to see if anyone could hear her. “But I do feel as though I can trust you,” said Hazel. Exana smiled. “My mother has told me never to tell anyone that I have been chosen to be a slayer, because I bear the mark of a slayer, it is a mole atop my left breast, though I did not choose that I wanted to become a slayer, it is like what you being a witch has become,” said Exana.

Hazel knew her latest friend would soon be her best friend, Exana thought the same. “I am glad that you felt you could tell be that, for I am a witch although I bear no marks on my skin, those marks that are said to be the mark of the Devil. “You say that you are a slayer is that a slayer of demons and if so what types of beings do you slay?” asked Hazel. “All types of demons, I feel tension in my stomach whenever one of them is near,

that is when I need to look for a weapon, a weapon to protect myself or to kill it, or them.” Hazel faced Exana. “Them and by yourself? How many have you ever had to face at the same time?” asked Hazel. Exana heard the worry in her new best friends voice and began to believe she would soon be the someone she could trust, Exana smiled. “The most I have had to fight at one time has been four,” said Exana.

“Is it that you are that strong or do you possess another ability?” asked Hazel. Exana looked down at the ground. “This is starting to get complicated but I feel as though it is worthy,” said Exana as she looked into the eyes on Hazel's face. “I have noted that my injuries heal quite quickly, that although I feel little pain when an animalistic being hits me the pain is soon gone. Once or twice after I was sure that I had been killed I realised I was not even injured.”

Exana smiled as she remembered those times. “I can heal peoples injuries,” said Hazel, “just by thinking, by putting my hand over the affected area I can the pain and heal the torn skin, it is replaced with fresh skin.” Hazel thought about what she had recently done. “Not all objects are easy to heal, moving objects I often find hard to do, talking to a persons mind even convincing a person what to do I can do, that I have done.

Those are things I should avoid letting others see or I might be accused of being a witch,” said Hazel. They looked to each other. “If we can live near each other we will always be there to help the other, I will be there to help you face the demons,” said Hazel. “And I will be there to help you be free from all accusations,” said Exana. Exana's mother asked William Shakespeare to help her find accommodation for her and her children and for Hazel.

It soon became apparent that Hazel had no father. So, Anne and William had two cleaners and several children who were always willing to help though it came as a surprise to learn that Exana often fought demons. The biggest surprise was learning that Hazel was a witch and a witch of some considerable ability. Hazel and William often talked into the dead of the night,

Hazel convinced William to portray the witches in his play as ugly women ugly women with long crooked noses in tall pointy hats. On the night that William Shakespeares ugly witches appeared around the cauldron they made such a memorable hit, Hazel allowed herself to feel safe, the pretty Hazel at last knew peace. Free to wander into the lands where the witches were protected by demons.

Exana Cyss thrust her might against the demonic king and that allowed our Hazel to reduce the growth of witches to join the demons on and in the wet ground. Exana and Hazel began to see themselves as worthy of others pleasure. They pursued the demonic kind into the hills and caves above where the towns villages and hamlets were. Their main worry was keeping clear of those who had accused them as being witches,

Hazel was lucky as the Powers That Be would tell Exana when danger from those she sought to protect was at a risk to their safety, Exana and Hazel would move to another locale and those who had falsely accused them, it was then that the girls those knew they could feel safe from the demonic kind. Initially the witch hunters claimed that Exana and Hazel had attacked the people, soon though the people knew it was the witch hunters who were wrong, then condemned and banished from wherever.

The well wishers were often ready and waiting if Exana and Hazel wandered onto their lands. Many peoples of the towns were ready with a welcome for the two travelers. Days became weeks which blossomed into months then years. Even when age caught up with them they kept protecting the peoples of the land. Eventually Exana began to feel her body ache from constant fights and she stopped climbing out of her bed until the darkness had Hazel whisper into Exana's ear as she lay on her death bed.

Hazel promised to always treat her friend as she would always try to be a friend with her whoever she would appear to be in the future lives of the slayer. Exana said her replacement would try to tell Hazel who she was. Hazel promised that she would always have the name of a girl and the name would also be the name of a tree, she hoped for the days when she and the slayer would be friends.
