Exercise Support

@TamsinValencia I've just heard of aqua pilates! I don't think any pools here would do it, but could be a good workout.
The aqua classes in the city look so fun! But they are only at night and for over 50s 🙁
I lose all my progress from the pool when I can only go once or twice a week. I gotta find something else to do.

I usually do walk/jog intervals after seeing the eldest off at the bus stop but it's been so cold that I haven't been able to and it kinda stinks. Since I started back in September, my pace and endurance have improved significantly and I don't want to lose my hard won progress. Hopefully this weather gets better. I really need to start going to the base gym that has the family room, but I kinda hate having to wrestle the youngest into her seat, so I've been avoiding going.

I moved the rowing machine inside so I can use it on hot days. 2kms a day is do-able, more than that I get too wiped out now.

Been to the pool as much as I can, its in a town that gets far more rain than here. The water is much colder now there is some cloud cover! So its not as appealing as it was at first! If it stayed around 26-28C in the water, its perfect in all weather, even the wind and rain. But its been 24C and dropping and feels cold now even in the sun! Its a long drive too, so I probably undo the hour in the water with the hour and a half drive.

I'm not doing good. Doing more far more exercise than I was last year, but I've put on 10 kilos over summer. I booked in to the see the doctor again. Last time I went she said I had a painful fat disease (Dercums) so diet and exercise were not going to help it, but I figured it was just to fob me off cos I know I am fat. But now my legs are hurting way more and I've put on a lot of weight despite the daily walking, daily dumbbells, daily rowing and swimming a few times a week. I had been so strict about eating proper 3 meals a day as well, where as before summer I didnt really eat at meal times, I just ate when I got dizzy. So I defo need more help to understand all this cos the weight is just packing on despite my best efforts. I have been eating more processed/ready meals because they had the calories listed so I could do the maths easier, but even within the 1400 calorie limit my legs are getting worse. I dont understand it. I thought I was getting stronger from swimming, but now I think its just cos I have more weight to carry haha. Swimming does bring great relief so I will just have to figure out a way to do the drive over winter to the pool in the city that is open.

Remember that muscle is denser than fat so building muscle can increase your weight.
I jog/walked almost a mile today!
I'm a terrible runner and also wanting to do things like 5ks
My endurance... is really bad.

Today though?

Time: 16m 24s
Distance: 0.98 mi
Pace: 16’46”

I used to finish 1.5 mi in about 22 minutes. I've been doing walk/jog intervals since my eldest started school last year, mostly with my youngest in the jogging stroller. Today was a "fun run" without the kiddo and stroller.
I manage a shuffling jog on the jogging portions. It's not terribly fast, but I've been improving from when I started in September where I would do about .62mi at a roughly 22'02" pace.

My goal currently is to get to a continuous jog for my whole route and then start working on the speed. Another goal is a 15 minute mile and then shave the time off from there.

Finally got back in to the pool today since my car is finally repaired. I was pleased with my endurance after a week off. The pool will close for winter early april 🙁 The weight gain over the summer is due to dercums, a second opinion doctor has told me the same thing,it doesn't matter what I eat or drink or do, its not going to improve. Swimming was relief so I will be sad when the pool closes.

I absolutely felt improvement in my strength from swimming, far more than anything else I was doing before it. Perhaps because I was in less pain in the pool and moving more correctly? Im not sure, but swimming made the biggest physical difference out of all the exercise I have tried so far. I know I can't get to the city pool often but I dont want to lose strength so I will aim for a swim as often as I can.

Ya'll, I am super proud of myself. After procrastinating for months, I finally joined the gym and have started working out. It's been hard since I'm so out of shape, but I feel so much better after I do! I'm starting real slow; I've been doing about 10 minutes on the exercise bike, then 20 minutes of pilates, and then using some weights. Right now, I'm doing this workout three times a week. My goal is to lose 25 lbs by the end of the year, which will put me back at a healthy weight and BMI or a size 8.

I've also on alternate days been hiking with my dogs.

Trust me, if I can do this, you can too! We got this!

That’s great!
Starting my second week going to the gym tomorrow! I survived my first leg day last week... barely lol

I started working out at the gym because I noticed my walk/jog intervals had a problem - my calves were giving out before my lungs did and it was limiting me.

But also, I really wanna lose the baby weight that's been hanging around for almost two years. I couldn't work out until around now because I had to have my umbilical hernia repaired, and I wasn't comfortable trying anything strenuous until now.

No pool this week, but have kept up with the weights and walking and rowing. I can feel my back wanting to twist again, so trying to find the right exercises on my air track to keep whatever muscles that got strong from swimming to stay strong til I can swim again!

I lost over 4 kilos on anti inflammatories, still dropping. I honestly find relief in the fact more people understand what psych meds do to a metabolism now. No judgement from that young doctor, just said its an unfortunate lifelong result of psych meds. Neither of us expected anti-inflammatories to work so well, but Im glad they did. Much much better than other meds i've been on. Havent figured out why yet but hopefully they dont turn on me like the Lyrica did.

What are antiflammatories. I feel like that would help me.

I have to steer clear of aspirin these days after an unfortunate incident with ibuprofen.

I'm in the same boat! Just started working out regularly not long ago, and man it's kicking my butt! I'm so out of shape, and about 20 lbs overweight, so it's hard, but I know it will get easier with time. I feel so much better when I exercise.

What type of exercise are you doing, and how often? I've been going four days a week, and switching it up so I don't get bored, but basically doing some type of cardio (bike, swim, treadmill), then weights, then either yoga or pilates for core strength and increasing flexibility.

Anti inflammatory meds like asprin, but I get a prescription long acting low dose that I can take for weeks at a time rather than days. I think thats what helps most - the long acting bit.

Right! It hurts but you just feel so much better after that workout!

I'm about 35 pounds overweight myself.

Mostly I do my cardio in the mornings (walk/jog intervals with stroller) and free weights at the gym. Our gym's family section has a multi use machine, treadmills and free weights and benches, so I've been working on both upper and lower body, core and doing some treadmill work. I admit I haven't yet tried the machine. I have diastasis recti from both pregnancies and PT for that, plus working on overall flexibility and gaining strength as well as endurance for running but I admit I have no idea what I'm doing. I might look into a personal trainer. 🙂

I got sick with broncitis, so this week I'm not working out and focusing on healing. Looking forward to hitting the gym when I'm better, though!

I met with a personal trainer only once but it was so helpful! she showed me how to lift weights properly so I don't hurt myself.
Hit 100kms on the rowing machine again, so its reset back to zero. I should have taken track of how long it took! I know the last time it ticked over was just before summer. Its much easier to get on now that its inside the house.

My arms were so sore last night! I didnt think I did much more weights than I usually do, Im not sure why they suddenly were worse. I didnt go walkies today, the dogs got a bath, tomorrow we'll be back to it.

Got in a good two hour walk with one of my bfs in early morning humid and hot. It is almost 100 now. 7 am for the win! Thank g-d for ac
____

AC - a dangerous, environmentally destructive American idea that I have become addicted to! When it gets to be over 100 degrees before noon and humid enough you can see the air... It starts to be about survival for people like me. (Asthmatic)

Save the environment by cutting back on heat in winter. You can always wear a sweater.

Yes, use the AC, its 2026! If cars can self drive and drones can bomb, and straws are gone, you should be able to sit in comfort in your home!

I have asthma too. The struggle is real.
I have not been on the rowing machine for aaages. I have been going for drives far and wide with the dogs for new adventures. I have definitely been doing LESS exercise over the winter because I have been doing more driving and more garden work. For the first time in years I am under 100kg and it worries me. I like to be on the big side, its more comfortable for me. And I dont want to have to buy new clothes! I dont want to lose my boobs but its coming off my legs by the looks of it.

Gardening could be exercise...
Jeez, I've totally fallen off the exercise wagon. It's unbearably hot during the day, so I don't want to walk. And once it gets dark it cools down, but I don't feel safe walking alone at night. I let my YMCA membership lapse because I wasn't using it enough to make it worthwhile. I have also been depressed, so that kills my motivation as well (which is ironic because exercise can help depression).

I try to motivate myself to exercise at home, maybe do yoga or aerobics videos, but for some reason I never manage to do it. I'm so disappointed with myself, because I know I'd feel so much better if I was exercising regularly again.

For those of you who do manage to exercise at home, what do you do, and how often?

Gardening certainly is a workout! I am definitely more sore after a stint of yard work than any other exercise haha. Vacuuming and washing the car can go into that category too! Why do they hurt so much? Lol

I have done our walkies for today. I always do my knee raises and balance exercises when the dogs stop to sniff. People in town can judge all they want, Im not falling off the curb onto the highway like I have seen so many of them do!

I havent done my rowing or dumb bells for a few weeks. I have been driving a lot, and that really takes it out of me. Oddly, I continue to lose weight. I still eat like a pig, driving means more takeaway.

This is a great idea to do exercises when you walk your dogs!
