"Expendables" TV Show

I'd heard rumors about this before, actually more like just mentioning a TV spinoff using old TV action stars, but this is the first time that I've actually seen anything solid written about it:

So, what do you think? I think that it has potential as a short season series, (8 or 10 weeks seems to be the trend now) with maybe four or five episodes per mission, two missions per season.

And which "old guard" TV action stars would you like to see on the team?

The film appealed a little as a one off, but even that looked pretty bad, and has dragged itself out with three the to sequels (with more to come I'm sure). This doesn't appeal at all. It might be better if they do different genres rather than just stick to action. Jennifer Garner would be the best thing about this is the rumor linking her is true, but with a bit of luck she will have too much sense soil her career with this trash😉

To be honest I'm not sure they got the movies right at all. The idea worked as a fun one-off but the sequels have been pretty weak even as action movies go. Ex 2 was a cringe-fest and even though Ex3 was better it still had a bunch of nobodies onscreen for the middle part of the 'plot'.
If the same people were involved with making a tv series it probably wouldn't work.

@Fuffy Baith yeah Garner gets a raw deal. She is far better than many people give her credit for. I have never seen Alias so don't know if that is any good though.

Expendables 2 was fantastic! That should have been it really. It was everything the first one was supposed to be but couldn't quite manage. We got all of our favourites, brilliant one liners and entertaining action. A proper throw back to the good old days, like Commando. The third one was awful and I think I'll be checking out of the franchise. A bunch of nobodies and a 12 a rating, not for me.

That said I wouldn't be able to resist a look at a TV series if Sly was in it.

You more of a Sly man? I like Arnie more myself. I think he has been in the better films and just isn't as wooden or serious as Sly😉

I like both of them. Slightly favour Sly on the numbers. I enjoy the Rocky and Rambo franchises for a start and there are a number of other films which I really like him. He has his stinkers though, Bullet to the Head should be avoided by everyone for example.

Arnie I think has a larger number of shockers but the ones he gets right are fantastic. Commando is one of my all time favourites. Total Recall, Running Man and The Last Stand were all great. I'm a big fan of 80's action and general destruction.

Stallone himself said that Expendables 3 wasn't up to the standards that he wanted it to be, plus having the entire movie released on the internet several weeks before the release date didn't help a bit. He has also said that E4, if it is ever made, will be the best, and possibly the last, movie in the franchise, but you know how the Gods of Hollywood operate. If they can squeeze more money out of the idea, they're gonna go for it.

Which leads into the Expendables TV show. Supposedly, Stallone will only Executive Produce it. The stars would be old action stars from TV, rather than the movies. People like (if they're willing and available) Tom Selleck and Chuck Norris. If it follows the current trend, it could be an 8 or 10 episode season, focused on a single mission, allowing people like Selleck, who already has an obligation to his current series, to do this one between seasons. It's all very tentative at the moment, of course, but it sounds a whole lot better to me than the spin off movie "ExpendaBELLES" with Jolie as Barney's ex wife, heading her own team of old female action stars,

The trouble is the general output of quality from Stallone has been so low and The Expendables such an obvious cash cow and ego excerse for him and his buddies that it is hard to take anything he says at face value. Also, I think he knows that the series has peaked so is doing that classic actor thing of distancing himself from it.

I agree mostly on your first point. I have not seen any of the films, so can't totally comment, but yeah if they had to do it should have been left as a one off.

As for the TV show format well like I said it may work better if they expanded it to other genres and not just action. I guess they might go for something like the A-Team, but that seems a dated concept now. I just think television has moved on and the audience expects more than big dumb exploisions.

Ultimate Force would be a good show to use as a blue print. Mostly action but with both humour and a very dark side to it.
