F1 2009- Rule changes- Race wins instead of points

Im not sure if any of you follow F1 as closely as I do but have you heard about the new rule changes? This is one of THE biggest changes to F1 since its conception and I for one am not impressed...

Essentially the rule is that instead of points, the entire championship will be determined by race wins. One example of this is how in previous years, racers would happily sit in 3rd place if the people in front were not within reach of the championship. So this rule means we'll get more fights for the win but I still think its a silly decision that rewards the winner without adequately rewarding the 'best' driver. The guy who comes in 2nd for 17 whole races gets screwed by the guy who manges to get a few wins on him.

An example of this is the legendary (gooooo Britain!) Lewis Hamilton. He managed to win with a legendary last race by taking fifth place on the final lap of the final race...under the new rule, Hamilton would have lost the championship due to his lack of wins. It screams Shumi getting away with murder with the FIA all over again. FIA continually make stupid decisions and this is just another one to add to that long list...

So what do you think of the new rule?
 
I like it, they get paid a LOT of money, I think it should be more competetive (dangerous?..) for them. I don't want any of them to win.
 
I don't know whether I like it or not. Maybe they could've done a point system based on first second and third place or something? Still ultra competitive but more fair.
 
Seriously did they change this now? so close to the new season. That seems very strange to me.

I also thinks it sounds like an extremely stupid idea!

Not sure why they feel the need to change something that last year gave us a very close and exciting season.

If anything they could get back to the 10, 6 point system if they want to make wins more important.

I like this rule. You got to be 1st to win! 2nd place is for losers!

Nah, I don't really care. I find F1 to be immensely boring, especially now. Except when they have the crazy pile ups, tyres flying everywhere, kind of thing. Those are good.

I'm a big F1 fan, so i'm really not to sure about this. It might shake things up a bit, which could make for good viewing.
I'm willing to give it a chance. For now.
 
It is probably showdown of power more than anything to show who is the boss. It is very bad in my personal opinion because it can make ignoring some rules way too lucrative. The rule is 9 (or was it 8) enginges for entire season and next one means penalty for the next race. This rule makes engine meant to last only one race very viable option to normal length engine.
 
I like the new rule. A good change because it got a little boring the last few seasons. Now the teams have to try harder and that's what the F1 needs. We'll have a great season ahead!!!
 
haha, i suppose we will got more crashes, and more fighting for first which I dont mind, the trouble is its not rewarding the overall best driver. It sounds like it is in theory, but F1's complicated and lots of things happen out on the track. Getting a bad start and your in 5th from pole and you have to fight your way back throughout the race but only get 2nd...well, in the old system you would still be rewarded for that effort.

One problem I have though is to me this just screams 'Massa deserved the title' to all those tools out there who think Hamilton didnt deserve the win. FIA and their ferrari tea towels arn't changing this rule for the good of the sport...more because they can.

Concerning second paragraph, do not become what you accuse of others. Ferrari has nothing to do with change most likely, in fact they are among most hurt teams of the overall decisions right along with Mclaren. This point is actually Bernie Ecclestone medal idea with slight change. Points still count if equal number of wins.

I do agree with first paragraph.

Way I see it winners should be winners, not people who score more points for playing it safe.

Silum agrees: Actually, i totally agree. I just dont think the guy who wins 1 race vrs the guy who scores 2nd for 20 should lose. ..Either way, im more excited than ever to see how the championship turns out...with a fight for first, things should get interesting!

BUT if he is good enough to get second, why not first?

If its because he's always beaten, then he isn't a winner and if its because he's playing safe then he is a loser!

It is very very limited thinking though. Its still contest that is not the overall 'best' driver that wins anymore..

Based on what you said Al...

A guy comes in DEAD LAST for 16 of 17 races. He comes 1st (possibly even out of luck... though thats not the issue)...for one race. This 'guy' then takes the championship from someone who came 2nd in say 15 out of 17 races...who do you think is the better driver? Who 'deserves' the championship?

Now obiously things are a lot closer than that... but do you know that out of F1's 60 year history...about 20 of the leaders would have been different under the new rules? Its a pretty major shift for F1 but...honestly...im looking forward to the results but I do think these rules arn't going to last long.

...A little F1 history...Stirling Moss, the greatest driver to never win an a championship... WOULD have won a championship under these new rules!

I do think comparing past with present is useless though becuase each driver still does whatever he needs to do to win, Hamilton may not have won under these current rules but all he needed was to place a single point higher in the previous race to win the championship... I think either way, F1 fans or not...THIS is the year to watch racing...back on the mighty BBC after many many years

The guy who wins.

Winning isn't all skill, its also a matter of luck.

This guy, for whatever reason, got to the number one spot and he should commended for it.
Whatever reason was behind the others not getting the number one spot, is not his fault - he is a winner in this case.

Agreed...its a matter of skill to make first. And if the championship were judged on a single race, he would be champion...but its not.

The other guy managed 16 odd races and got 2nd place every time...an AMAZING achievement compared to the other guy who did crap yet managed to get a first in a single race...the first guy is obviously the better driver (obviously he got unluckly if 16 other drivers made 1st while he only managed 2nd every time)...but getting 2nd everytime is an awesome achievement...at least... it was.

Th reality is in a race, a guy who scores really well in the tables (multiple 2nds, 3rds, 4ths and 5ths) is srewed by the guy who did crap and got lucky on 3 races where he came first. He ISN'T the better driver, because out of 17 races, he came first only 3 times... compared with the driver who was consistent in 17 races....

Its a different way of viewing the winner...this season will have to be viewed on its own merits and unfortunately...only the #1 position counts, all else is pointless.

Maybe we can make him like a certificate for coming second, you know like when the div kids at school get one for great attendance, so thats the only way they will get called up at the end of year assembly?

lol... thankfully, ive given you enough karma for one day so I dont have to promote your ego any more.

I dont disagree with you though, I think this F1 season will be the most interesting yet and the fact that second place isnt rewarded should make 1st much more fascinating...enough to bring non F1 fans in...afterall, the United Kingdom is the reigning champion, why not support your country!

It was because I said 'div kids' wasn't it?
I thought that they decided to not use this system this year after all.
It got huge protests among pretty much everyone. Mostly because it was so rushed and so close to the new season I think.

As I understand it is still planned to be used next year.
But they will probably change it to something else a week before next season starts...

Not 100% of this though. I know I read it somewhere but I can't find anything about it after a quick look at formula1.com
It actually annoys me even more that I don't know what system they will use a day before the season starts.

Points will decide winner this year, next year is uncertain. Much bigger issue at the moment is diffusers, is it legal or not. So far been declared legal, but I doubt it is end of it.
