Fabulous BB's Top 50 Most Memorable Scenes in The Buffyverse (Week 4)

Gah, this week is so HARD! I see a scene from Not Fade Away, so I skipped over that one right away. The whole Xander/Dawn scene is nice, but not all that memorable for me. So that leaves the other eight to pick from. Yikes!

1. "Me" Again, my favorite episodes, so this scene always sticks in my brain. It is SO empowering, and Buffy just seems to realize that maybe not all is lost at that point - she still has herself and her strength, and needs to beat the bad guy no matter what.
2. "Teacher Makes Three" I remember my mouth just dropping open at this scene. It's the first time we really see first-hand a truly violent, personal death of someone so close to the Scoobies. We see how Angelous likes to toy with his victims. It is also a turning point for Buffy, who realizes after this she can't just sit and wait for Angelous to make a move any more.
3. "A Massacre" Such a turning point for Angel. I believe this is the only time in the whole 'verse we see Angel willingly let a human die, evil or not. He lost something when he lost Darla and lost the meaning of his mission, spiraling into such a dark place.
4. "Am I a Righteous Man" Another great Angel scene so full of emotion. Here are two soulmates, one without hope and one desperately trying to help the other find purpose and meaning. This is where Angel realizes that he can in fact make a difference. He finds his mission. Without this moment, I don't think helping the helpless would have happened.
5. "Insecurities Exposed" Now here is the moment when all the turmoil and disconnection of S4 comes to a head: the Scoobies had been moving further and further away from each other and communications had a huge break down this season. All four were making assumptions about the others and no one would actually talk about it. After this point they made their peace and reconnected, but Spike did a beautiful job of taking their insecurities and playing each one against the other. Plus, it was hilarious!!

Damn it all, that was a tough one. I could easily have picked either "Teacher Makes Three" or "A Massacre" for the top pick of this week. So, I went with...

1) Teacher Makes Three- Whilst both were important moments in their respective shows, I think this moment had more ramifications throughout the Buffyverse. It is Angelus's murder of Jenny that hammers home towards Buffy and the audience that Angel is gone, and that Angelus is a monster- a very clever and dangerous monster. It is probably the biggest wedge between Buffy and Angel, and the rest of the Scooby gang, upon his return. And it is the first really major character death that the show has- Jenny is a recurring character, she's part of the Scooby gang, she's been around since the first season, and she dies. You're just waiting for Buffy or Giles to come in and save the day at the last moment, as Jenny runs from Angelus, and then they don't. It's also a very pretty scene, on a more shallow level, with the moonlight coming through the large window behind them.

2) A Massacre- One of my favourite Angel moments. It's extremely satisfying to see W+H get what's coming to them, particularly when Angel fires Holland's line back at him (though I am so very glad that Lilah survived, she went on to become one of my favourite characters). It's fun to see Dru and Darla turn on the lawyers who thought they would be a weapon for them. But more than that, it's one of the darkest points that we see souled-Angel at, and it's a very good example of how ruthless he can be, when it comes right down to it.

3) Murderous Rage - It's a memorable scene. It's sad, and it's frustrating, because we know that Wesley really does have the best intentions. He is trying to save Connor, and ends up dooming him. My sympathy for Wesley is limited, however, as he never goes to anyone else for help, and a big part of that seems to be he doesn't want to be around Fred and Gunn, and really, the potential death of Angel's son should probably be a more pressing issue than his romantic feels. This is one of the reasons I get a bit frustrated by Wesley as a character. That said, you expect Angel to understand. You expect him to forgive Wesley, and he just doesn't/ can't. And really, can you blame him?

4) Me- It's a little trite, perhaps, and given that the series as a whole makes quite a big deal about how important Buffy's friends are to her, and how she would probably have died several times over without them, it doesn't necessarily fit in that well. All that said, it's nice to have a reminder that Buffy can still be strong and confident in herself, that Angelus hasn't managed to break her for all his efforts.

5) Goodbye Wesleh - OK, so I've said above that Wesley annoys me slightly. And, I've got to be honest, I never really enjoyed Wesley/ Fred as a relationship- he basically fancies her for two and a half years, and mostly hangs around waiting for her to notice, except the point when she is actually in a relationship with someone else... yeah. BUT, all that said, the moment when he dies and just wants to see Fred again does tug the heartstrings a bit. Plus, Illyria morphing back into her true form with a mighty face punch is AWESOME.

Tough choice, as they were all pretty strong scenes.

This week is not that hard for me, so I have two favorites, ex equo:
The guy who fixes the windows: I'm not a huge fan of Xander, but he has some pretty amazing moments we forget, because he really can be a jerk. But it felt good to see him have some recognition, abd at the same time this moment is really sad. He has to give himself that recognition. He was there to support the girls (after Riley left, or in Freshman, and, of course, with the Yellow Crayon speech to point a few). And he is harfly thanked. So this moment is a bittersweet but defining one for him.

Teacher makes three: I think I'll always remerber the cold wave that went though my spine when I heard Jenny's neck snap. It was the moment the show got to me and became so special to me. It changed my entire understanding and interest. One of the main character killed? BTVS is like no other to me and that's the exact second I realised it.

I liked the other moments but those two mean a lot to me!

I am going to go with Me, mainly from the raw emotion that can be easily seen in both Angelus and Buffy. I remember watching this scene for the first time and bawling my eyes out. XD
All of these choices were so emotional and heartwrenching. Makes me wish I could go back and rewatch them all for the first time.

To be honest with everyone, I thought I had balanced each week's selection pretty well. After posting last week and seeing this week, though, I realize I could have done a little better with these two! However, trust me, it wasn't easy to do the selection for each week when you realize that the opinion on each scene will vary from person to person. 😛

OMG this is even more intense than the last poll. I can't choose between "Me", Dander and Buffy&Dawn scenes. :eek2: As much as I wanna choose "Me" scene, I had to go with Dander scene, because I always think Dawn is underrated. And that scene made me cry so hard. Team people with no powers forever! 😀
