Facebook’s worldwide tech-driven Manifest Destiny continues. This time it’s with a phone, named Buffy. Because it will slay the market. Seriously.

Facebook, the social networking gorilla, could unveil its first smartphone powered by a modified version of Android, according to a special first-in-a-series report by All Things Digital. Code-named “Buffy,” after the TV character played by Sarah Michelle Gellar, the new handset could arrive within 12-18 months.

Long-rumored, Facebook’s entry into the ever-changing smartphone market now seems confirmed. In fact, the company recently is said to have signed HTC to build its first handset, although Samsung could also become a partner as well.

According to the report, Facebook’s handset will be deeply integrated into its current services and support HTML5 as a platform for apps.

Although a Facebook spokesman wouldn’t comment on “Buffy” specifically, they did state:

“Our mobile strategy is simple: We think every mobile device is better if it is deeply social. We’re working across the entire mobile industry; with operators, hardware manufacturers, OS providers, and application developers to bring powerful social experiences to more people around the world.”

With 350 million users worldwide, we’d be surprised if Facebook didn’t eventually release its own handset. This news suggests that day could arrive as early as sometime in 2012.

Really? REALLY?!! Ohh I don't know about this one... My first reaction was "What the heck?!"
 
If this isn't a joke then I like the fact that they codenamed it Buffy. Although I personally would never buy a facebook phone. Don't get me wrong I'm not anti FB but I wouldn't want a phone ramming it down my throat every ten seconds.
 
Is it anyone besides me that think that the buffy name might me a play on that breaking dawn is big now and that buffy is going to slay all other phones? 😀
 
Huh, That's a pretty strange. The name is...pretty funny. Just hope people aren't turned off by it. I will not be getting it...not a big FB person.
 
Well I'm guessing its fake. If not...company heads are selling thier advertisement to FB now...I guess the remake movie isn't working out eh?
 
A Facebook phone? Aahh, they're taking over the world! 😉 If anything just makes me kind of wanna delete my FB account...

Funny if they call it Buffy though, kind of random, but funny.
 
I love that it's named after Buffy but I'd never buy one.... Although I said the same thing about the iPhone. 😉
 
I don't care about Facebook, or that it's named buffy, the Fact that it could be built by HTC is a good sign.

Although I dont really think mobiles need to be integrated with FB more, you get your contacts, your feeds, your messages and the calendar on pretty much all smartphones now - what else do you need from FB
