Fairy Tales Rebooted

What do you think about the current trend of revising the old familiar fairy tales in the movies and on TV? "Mirror, Mirror," "Snow White And The Huntsman," and several other movies,plus TV shows like "Once Upon A Time," "Grimm," "Lost Girl," (the last 2 aren't really based on specific fairy tales as such, but fit within the same genre) and no doubt there will be more, considering the success of those. Are the Big Bad Wolf and the Evil Step Mother going to replace Dracula and Frankenstein (both of whom have been noticeably absent in the last few years) as our major monsters?

And, please, dear god, is the zombie obsession beginning to lose momentum? I am so sick of bad actors in ragged clothes and rediculous makeup pretending to eat chicken guts.
 
I'm actually loving it, although I havn't seen the movies yet, I am looking forward to them. I was brought up with fairy tales like most kids and my mum used to read me the Brothers Grimm stories and I've always loved the Disney versions, I think it's about time we saw some live action stuff! 😀
 
IDK, most of them are actually circling back closer to the original versions of the tales, which are so much more interesting to me than the sanitized versions. I really like Once Upon a Time, but haven't seen any of the others yet.
 
I don't like it. I don't like fairy tales and I don't like fantasy (well, depending on how you would define the genre 'fantasy').
I'm not at all interested in Snow White And The Huntsman and all the other movies.
I'd rather watch a new Dracula or Frankenstein film.
 
I've been really enjoying the darker versions of The fairy tale reboots. I've found both Grimm and OUAT enjoyable and I am really looking forward to seeing Snow White and the Huntsman. I don't know that I will find this genre enjoyable for a long period of time, but as many are fairly recent I'm still enjoying them. Plus, it's a nice change of pace from the popular vampire, zombie, werewolf craze.
 
I agree with [MENTION=11238]KellGreen[/MENTION] the new turn they took with fairy tales is way closer to the original stories than the Disney versions. It gives a new perspective to stories most of us knew as children. And I never say no to a little action in movie/TV show 🙂
 
The darker reboots are awesome. I have never seen Grimm, it seems a bit too intense for me judging from the previews, but I am so loving Once Upon a Time. It's not as dark as Grimm, I expect, but it's not the pansy-ass-rainbows-and-marshmallows-Disney-cartoons that I love either.

And I am definitely wanting to see Snow White and the Huntsman. From the previews, it looks awesome. 🙂
 
"Grimm" is awesome, it shows that David Greenwalt must have been crucial for the success of BtVS and AtS.

"Lost Girl" has very little to do with fairy tales, though.
 
I watched the first four episodes of 'Once Upon a Time' yesterday and have to say that I thought they were incredible! I don't mind writers 'borrowing' from other works if the end result is an interesting spin or a different direction and OUAT, to my mind at least, has achieved that. I haven't seen any of the other ones mentioned but if they are this good then I am all for it.

As for the whole zombie thing, with World War Z getting the Brad Pitt treatment, it looks like it is here to stay for at least another year or two. Not to mention the popularity of The Walking Dead TV show. Which I don't mind. Being a long-suffering geek who has been ridiculed for my taste in, well pretty much everything ever, it is nice to see that my interests are now mainstream and those people who mocked are now the first people in line because the trendy media outlets tell them its cool.
 
Is there a particular reason for the sudden upsurge for fairytale-based stories? It's an odd, though enjoyable, trend. I've always enjoyed fairytale-based modern tales, but they've always somehow seemed like the easy way out. I mean, it's easy to come up with something interesting and witty if you have classic source material to play against.
 
Some of it is good, but as with every trend nowadays, it gets beaten to death really quickly.

I pick a couple I like and ignore the rest, pretty much. I'm watching Once Upon a Time, Grimm, and Lost Girl (which is actually more "urban fantasy" than fairytale). I like all of them, although I wish they'd back off on the Disney-fication of OUAT and focus more on the original fairytales.

I haven't bothered watching any of the other multiple "Snow White" projects that have come out lately.

The zombie thing was played out long ago. That's why I have no interest in The Walking Dead... looks pretty much the same as the other 10,000 Zombie Apocalypse stories.
 
I like it, I guess it stems from my love of fairy tales. I don't mind rebooting or modernizing of them because it just breathes a little new life into these old stories, proving their core to be timeless.

The zombie thing I grew bored of long ago however so I wouldn't mind if that started to fade away...
