I have this really clear picture of a fairytale but everyone that i have asked hasnt head of it so i thought that i would ask you guys to see if you can help me.

i dont remember what the story goes like but there is a tree trimmer and he has a very old axe. there are a few other tree trimmers that have like gold and silver engraved axes and they all laugh at the other tree trimmer. there is also a pond and that heeventually gets another axe out from.

that is all that i can remember i im not even sure if that made sense lol!! 😀 all of my friends think that i have made it up but i am so sure that i havent. i have tired to reasearch it but there are so many fairytales that i couldnt even narrow it down. can you help me??? 😀

OK... someone's had far too much loony juice! lol 🙂

Sorry hunny... haven't got a clue what the story could be! 🙁

I know, i know. I have a book with it in. It's one of Aesop's fables.

It's called the gold axe and the silver axe and it goes like this:

A man was cutting down wood in a forest. He sat down to take a break by a pond. His axe suddenly fell in, but as the woodcutter couldn't swim he didn't know what to do.

His sick mother was at home waiting for him, and he felt sad as he knew he couldn't afford a new axe. Then suddenly the water began to bubble and a person emerged from the water and asked him why he cried. The woodcutter told him and the spirit went back under to find the axe for him.

The spirit came back up with a gold axe and asked the woodcutter if it were his, he told him iot wasn't and it was just a plain one. The spirit disappeared again and cam back with a silver axe, asked the wood cutter if it was his and he said no again. He disappeared again and when he came back up he held the woodcutters axe.

The spirit told him as he was so honest he would give him the silver and gold axes as a gift. He graciously took them and ran home to his mother. The next day he told the other woodcutters what had happened and a greedy wood cutter went to the spring and dropped his axe in the water.

The water spirit once again emerged and asked the man what was wrong. He said his mother would die if he did not have an axe to chop with and the spirit disappeared. When he returned he held the gold axe in his hand and asked if it was the mans. He told him it was but the spirit became enraged.

"You liar, you say your mother is sick and then try to find a better axe." Then he disappeared, and the woodcutter was left with no axe.

MORAL: Trying to get more by lying to others may make you lose what you already have.
