Faith and Mayor's relationship

Excellent thread.

I take a more sanguine view of the Mayor and this relationship than most of you.

I think that so say the Mayor is evil is too simple. His behavior is not lawless or random. He has a definite sense of what ought to be. He is honorable in his own way, as Wesley says of W&H, and I don't see any reason to doubt his affection for Faith. Remember, Buffy was able to use his affection for Faith against him.

He seems immoral to us, if I understand it, because he has no sense of obligation to anything abstract. He isn't loyal to his planet or his species or his country or even his city. He is loyal to himself, though, and to a tiny group of people with whom he has formed definite relationships. Notice how he remains faithful to his former wife, even after she was dead. That's how I understand his morality. It's different from consensual morality, but it's not a moral vacuum.

Why does he trust Faith? Because he understands her, at a glance. Why is Faith loyal to him? Because he gives her what she needs, a father's love, first of all, and a sense of place and belonging. He gives her a place of her own to live in, which she's never had before, which none of the Scooby gang even thought of. Most telling, he puts her in a dress, so as to honor and affirm that tender girly part of her that had been denied and suppressed and tormented for so long. If Giles, or Wesley, had understood her half so well as the Mayor did, she would never have gone over.

Is this sick or weird? I may be in a minority, but I don't think so. Faith had needs, perfectly natural and legitimate needs, that weren't being met, and she saw no chance that her needs would be met on the "light side." She found a man who knew what her needs were and how to satisfy them. In return, he wanted loyalty and she gave it to him.

What was "weird and sick" was her relationship to Buffy. She wants Buffy's respect and acceptance, which so far is natural. She thinks she has no chance to get it, so she thinks something like this: "I can be her enemy and have her hatred; then I will be something to her, even if not what I want to be. Otherwise, I will be nothing to her."

That is very sad, but not unnatural.

That's such an awesome take on it. *applauds*
Is it weird? Yes I think so.
I understand it though like how she would look to him as a father figure and I think he even loved Faith like a daughter but in the end his mission was bigger than her. I think he trusted her and she was apart of his plan but if it came down to it to complete his goal she is expendable. However in graduation day pt 2 it shows just how much he cares for Faith. I think their relationship was weird and didn't really do to much good but none the less it was there.

BuffyThoughts made a really nice post about this, but I personally liked their relationship. 🙂 The Mayor was a very interesting character and it's too bad he was never explored for a longer period of time(or even brought back). At times he could be ridiculously cruel and sadistic. But then... You'd get that man who seemed to have a love for a lot of things in life, ranging from mini-golf to his relationship with Faith, who I'm sure he did indeed love. I can't say I ever hated the character. He had such great lines! 🙂 And Harry Groener played him admirably well.

As for Faith, sure it did keep her in the *dark* for a while... But I'm sure she would have went through something similar with or without him. She had killed a human and bottled up her feelings. She lied to Giles and tried to kill Xander. That was all before she even met him. He didn't help her get out of it, but he did bring some positive things to her. For starter he loved her, and he expressed it openly. He was taking care of her, and he seemed to be able to see a side to her that others had not seen. I think that if The Mayor had still a part of humanity in him, he lost it when Faith was put in a coma. Who knows what would have happened if things didn't end up that way? Maybe she could have changed something more in him... I always wondered what exactly he would have done with her once he'd become that pure demon. He had told her she'd be at his side... But how does that make sense really? He turned into a monster. Wouldn't he have killed her too?

Uh oh... Now I'm mostly rambling. But yea, to reiterate what I said at the beginning, I liked their relationship. 🙂

Hey, I like this relationship too, I mean, Faith and the Mayor. As evil as the Mayor is, I can't bring myself to hate him, just because I love this relationship so much.

The Buffy-Faith relationship is the one that is sad. I happen to be a big Fuffy shipper. I think those two should share love. Any sex should happen out of my sight, but if they want to cuddle and kiss a bit, I'll be delighted to see it. Remember when Buffy kissed Faith on the forehead, when the latter was in a coma?

That was the truth.
