Faith Helping Buffy

Assuming that it is both Buffy and Faith in their subconscious states in that dream, it doesn't really matter whether Faith was "good" or "evil" at this point. Her subconscious surrendered the information, not her. At her core, I don't think Faith was bad. She made bad decisions, yes, but I do not believe she was evil. So it's entirely plausible, to me, that subconsciously she still wanted to do good.

I do think it's entirely possible, though, that this was totally Buffy's dream and subconscious and had nothing to do with Faith actually being there.
 
I never thought of all these different theories to Faith telling Buffy how to hit the Mayor hard. I honestly thought it was Faith in Buffy's dream telling her. To me it came across that way because Buffy & Faith were Slayers that they'd be connected in more ways than one.

When Faith tells Buffy it's like they are both having an out of body experience because both of them are so close to death. The Faith we saw then and there was her true self underneath all that pain and angst that she had on the outside. It was like she had forgiven herself for a split second because she thought she was going to die and wanted to redeem herself. Obviously that didn't last long but I never thought it was Buffy's mind making her realise, it was Faith all along in that moment.

I re-watched this last night, and I agree (so, I think I'm changing my mind; can't remember, have to re-read my older posts LOL). I do agree with both flyonthewall and Eleftheria. Deep down Faith is not a bad person, she's just someone starving for acceptance. I think what convinced me is that Faith in the dream says "Take what you need" to Buffy.

Who or what is the cat supposed to symbolize? Faith? Dawn?
 
The cat is Faith. You can see it change into her sleeping body for a split second.

Also in Restless, Miss Kitty in Willow's dream symbolises the slayer's primal, animal instincts, again linking to Faith.

/\I think you are saying what I was thinking...maybe Faith was starting to look for redemption...but since she kept having dreams of Buffy trying to kill her, it drove her to become even more insane. She woke up knowing that subconsciously killing Buffy fixed her coma, and now conscious, killing Buffy would be the answer to her life problems too. Plus what everyone mentioned about her now being with Riley. I like everyone else theories too, and they could all be definite possibilities. I'm pretty sure Joss talks about this in the commentary for Graduation Day (or in an interview) I know it's somewhere on one of the season 3 dvd discs, that he did purposely leave it ambiguous...I'm currently rewatching season 3 though, so I haven't gotten around to the commentary again yet.
 
I think deep down, Faith wants Buffy to save her... from herself. She'd never admit it, but she doesn't want to do evil and hurt people. You saw how upset she was after killing the daputy mayor. She tried to hide it, to cover her feelings, she didn't wanna seem weak. She tells Buffy things in a tone that you can recognize as fear, sadness, panic. She went back to the crime scene right after she and Buffy ran away, realizing what she's done, she took a man's life. It wasn't the blood of a demon anymore. She couldn't deal, couldn't face what she's done. So she turns to evil, trying to convince others and herself that she's bad, that she didn't care that she's just took a human life. But it affects her more than she'd like. So she wants Buffy to stop the Mayor, to stop her from disappearing completely, from giving in to evil she didn't even want in the first place.

I think that Faith envied Buffy. She wanted to be like Buffy but she didn't think she had the choice. She was so used to living a certain life style that it was her instinct to attack Buffy. I like to think that Faith was trying to help Buffy.

At the same time I think Buffy understood Faith. She wanted so much to help her. She did everything she could to try to get through to her. Faith just wouldn't let her in.
 
I definitely think it was Buffy's mind, but I do think that she and Faith were connected somehow. Even though Faith never speaks of the dream, I like to think that they are connected because of their Slayer powers.
 
It's Buffy's mind. Faith wouldn't help her at this point because Buffy just tried to kill her. In season 4, Faith has the same type dream, except she is the innocent one and Buffy is the killer. It's all perceived by the mind that produces the dream.
