A while back when i heard they were reforming i made a thread about it, has anyone seen their gig at the download festival? They've all aged so much but still kick so much ass its unbelievable. They also did what they do best, and thats covering random pop songs 😀

Lady gaga also twittered about it saying that she can die happily now that they've covered one of her songs. I actually dont hate her anymore hehe.
 
To be honest I don't know that much more about them than that I love Epic. But the sad part is I love the song even more in the swedish version made by 3 rappers... But to answer your question, no I haven't seen the gig. Reunions are often fun though.
 
Drat.. I read the headline and thought that moderator of ours was leaving.. I thought this was a celebratory thread!

Epic is one my FAVORITE songs, it's in what I call my Permanent Top 5....as opposed to the list of favorite songs that changes depending on which way the wind is blowing. They opened the one and only concert I ever saw them at, Metallica/Guns-n-Roses, way back in the day. They were awesome, would LOVE a chance to see them again.

You have a permanent top 5 songs?! How is that possible, i try having a list but it changes all the time 🙁

That would have been an awesome concert, 3 fantastic bands together!

Yeah, cuz they're the PERMANENT Top 5. I do have a list of "favorites" that changes constantly....depending on the day of the week....my mood...whether the sun is shining or not....if it's a workday....any number of factors, LOL!
 
I don't know much about them, I guess when they were around I was too young or something. What I've heard so far, I really like though. And they are going to perform on a festival I'm going to! 😀
 
^ I'm very open to experimental rock! I'm looking forward to seeing them, really. I'm going to see them at Pukkelpop, a Belgian festival. I think I might very well be one of their few, if not only, gig this summer in the Netherlands-Belgium area. 😀

The only choice i find strange is King Nothing, good song but nowhere near Metallica's best.

The list doesn't go by what a band's or artist's best work is. The songs on my permanent list are ones that have meaning in MY life, so they're not necessarily the best or the most popular or whatever....That was why I made the disclaimer about them being very personal to ME.

What would your choices be, Frketson? What do you consider Metallica's best song? I'm a huge Metallica fan, I could talk about them all day.....*hijacking Faith No More thread to talk about one of my fave bands - CHECK.*
 
Ok fair enough.

I honestly can't choose 5 favourite songs of all time, way too hard. I always end up forgetting songs that i havent heard in a while and then my list goes to about 30....

Metallica song would have to be Master Of Puppets, its the song that got me into them and into rock/metal in general. 6 years ago i used to be a 'whatever is on the radio is awesome' type of kid. But when i heard that song, especially the middle interlude with the dual harmony. That literally changed my life, i wanted to learn guitar because of that song, and all the music i like now stems from it. (I guess thats definately in my top 5 favourite songs then 😀 )

Did you like their last album, Death Magnetic?

You know, when I was 13, I was a "whatever's on the radio" kid, too....then I grew up and developed a passion for rock!
Eh, Death Magnetic is ok. I *HEART* Cyanide, but I can't stand The Day That Never Comes. TRASH, TRASH, TRASH. That's pretty much the only song I don't like tho.

I guess if I had to pick one of their albums as my favorite, I'd go with S&M, that CD gives me chills. But I love almost all of their work, especially the old stuff, Ride The Lightning, Kill 'Em All, Master of Puppets.....pretty much everything Black Album and previous. I don't know, the sound evolved a lot between the early stuff and say, Load and Reload, altho I can't say I don't like that stuff, either. There's hardly anything of theirs that I don't like, altho I still can't figure out what they were trying to do with St. Anger. I recently saw them in a small venue in Austin (by small I mean probably 5,000 people could fit in there, but there was nowhere near that many there) and it was AWESOME. I've seen them in concert a couple of times, but always in big stadiums and arenas......I don't think anything will ever compare to the experience of seeing them in a small place like that...I mean I was RIGHT. THERE. Since I missed the shows with the San Francisco symphony, which must have been SO AWESOME, if going by the DVDs and CDs are any indication, I guess my little show in Austin will have to suffice. 😉

Yeah i pretty much really like death magnetic except for the day that never comes and my apocalypse, (the only thing thats good about the day that never comes is the awesome harmony, that relaly kicks ass).

Wow that must have been really cool, i havent seen them live yet, dunno if i ever will but i guess next time they come out i'll definately try and go. Personally, Load and Reload are my favourite albums. All the metalheads reckon they sold out but i dunno, i really love that style of kinda blues rock with psychadelic influences and country all thrown in. I love it. Also IMO kirk is on fire and really does some fantastic solos on it, i think his solos in the lates album pretty much suck, sounds like an amatuer guitar player.

Love S&M, outlaw torn is epic!!
 
Nah, I don't think they sold out with Load and Reload at all. They were a departure from their earlier style, which I think is what had a lot of people going, "huh?" Bands have to evolve, tho, it's what keeps them alive, you know? I'm an early Metallica fan, so I love their early stuff, but I like Load and Reload, too.

I like the opening bit on The Day That Never Comes, and you're right, the harmony is good. It's just the mish-mash style that I hate. Like they were trying to cram ALL of their previous work; hard driving rock, bluesy, melodic southern fried, into one song. I was telling a friend of mine (she's a fan, but she's not a die hard fan like me) that TDTNC sounds like, "oh, we're Metallica, we can throw any old crap together!" you know what I mean? Oddly, she loves it, and she knew I was gonna say I hated it, LOL!

You should grab the chance to see them live, they're awesome! Hetfield said when I saw them in Austin that the road is where it's always been for them, that they like getting out there and playing live. It shows. You can love the music from listening to it on a CD....but it's nothing compared to how you feel seeing them live. I mean, it sounds stupid, but the music really comes alive, you can almost see the colors of it in the air.
