Fake Accents On Film, TV and Other Media

Someone finally convinced me to watch Penny Dreadful the last week or so.

Billie Piper's god awful "irish" accent nearly made me stop right there and then, I went to school with far too many Irish girls to stomach the fake accents in British and American productions, they're terrible, but then they butcher English accents nearly as much.

Agreed. I like the show and think that Piper's a good actress but the accent was really bad, and she's British so doesn't have the same excuse as the Americans😀

I do like her and the character though.


A few that surprised me initially- Alexis Denisof, Finola Hughes (Charmed), Clare Bowen and Sam Palladino (Nashville), Colin Morgan (Merlin), Damien Molony and Sinead Kenan (Being Human)

Also, Stardust was the first thing I'd ever seen Clare Danes in and I thought she was English.

That's a great call actually Danes is a natural at so many things and good English accents can be added to the list.

Interesting both Naomi Watts and Nicole Kidman do really strong English too and Kidman does a good Russian in Birthday Girl. Something about those Aussie actresses I guess.😀

Emma Caulfield and her counterpart who played her first husband did a pretty good job of speaking in Swedish with a Swedish accent although I will defer to @Taake as to how real it was and whether Swedish has changed a lot since the 800's.

Haha, well yes, pretty massive changes in Swedish since then 😉
However, while their rythm was totally off, I thought they both did a fine job with the accents. With some focusing I found it rather understandable.
