Falling out of love

I think Cordy was more in love with Xander than Xander was with Cordy. She stood up to her friends (the popular crowd) because she loved and wanted to be with Xander.
I would say that she did that for herself, not Xander. She stood up to them. Cordelia even said herself in Dopplegangland. I think that maybe there was love between them, they just weren't IN love.
She also was just so broken hearted when he cheated on her, despite what she did for him. She still cried, even when she told him to stay away. I think it took her some time to then "fall out of love" with Xander.
Well, anyone would cry after being in a relationship for almost a year, and then being cheated on. It hurts, to trust someone and have them betray that trust like that. I love that Cordy didn't take any crap though. As soon as she found out, it was over. Xander could burn in h*ll for all she cared. Cordelia was strong like that. Nobody cheats on her and gets a second shot or even gets to apologize for the first time.

I love how Cordy didn't take any crap from him too, but she was still hurt. She burned the photos of them together, looking very sad while doing it. Despite being strong, she still seemed broken-hearted from what he did, which is why I think she was more in love with Xander than he was with her.

I agree. I think what happened with xander and cordy is the same thing that happened with xander and anya only on a smaller scale, which is to say, he got cold feet.

I think growing up with his parents really did a number on him and his ability to be in an intimate relationship... with cordy, all seemed to go well until he saw that she had pictures of them up in her locker, then he seemed to freak and suddenly develop an attraction to willow... and with anya, all was good until the idea of forever (marriage) started to become more and more a reality.

poor xander.

I can't comment on the angel relationships cause I've only just started watching the show. (such a late bloomer, I know)

Yes, poor Xander. Let's all feel bad for the guy who strung Willow along, CHEATED on Cordelia, got Angel killed, and left Anya at the alter. Oh, yeah, poor, poor Xander.

Strung Willow along? Got Angel killed? Did you watch some secret version of the series because I don't recall these things happening.

"Kick his ass." If Buffy had known that Willow was attempting to re-insoul Angel, she would've fought the battle differently. Maybe she would've acted faster, differently... maybe she could've stopped him from pulling out the sword if she would've walked into the battle with a clear understanding that there was a possibility that she could get Angel back, and not thought she was walking into a "to the death" battle.

lol. Maybe I was being a little harsh with the strung Willow along thing. I just meant that he knew how Willow felt at the time and kinda didn't show an interest in her until she went for Oz.

You do realise that Angel didn't actually die? So Xander didn't get him killed, even if we ignore the fact that he puled the sword before Buffy could even get to him and she had a very good reason to prevent that even without knowing about Willow's resouling. attempt.

Sorry... mistyped. Got him sent to a hell dimension for a hundred years or so. My bad. Kinda worse though. Don't you think?

Like I said though before, she might've acted faster if she hadn't thought that either way she had to kill him. Whether he did or didn't pull out the sword.

Considering she had no idea how long it would take for Acathla to send the world to hell or whether Whistler wasn't lying about the ritual being stoppable, I would say she had a very good reason to try to prevent the sword pulling anyway. And on the flip side, she could easily have lost the fight and doomed the world if her priority was to stall for time, so instead of "Xander got Angel killed" we can also summarise the situation as "Xander saved the world". But we are getting very off-topic...🙂

How interesting, I hated (viciously hated) Xander's "kick his ass" lie back when it first aired. But on re-watches all I can say is that it was the right thing to do because I firmly believe (as I suppose Xander did) that knowing Willow was working to re-ensoul Angel would have made Buffy slower if anything. She would have been hoping for Angel's return, she would have hesitated, she would have pulled back in order not to have to kill him. Knowing she had to kill Angelus, to me, and being without hope of Angel's return is what saved her life, because she was faster and better because of it.

I find it utterly intriguing to find you think the opposite! 😀

You seem to be confusing Buffy trying to kill Angel ASAP with Buffy trying to stop him from pulling out the sword from Acathla. Once he pulled it out, she was going to have to send him to hell anyway, soul or no soul.

I don't feel confused but thanks for trying to clear it up any way
I think Xander lied because he didn't want to complicate Buffy's will to kill Angel. I mean if there was hope of him being resouled, then who knows how Buffy would've acted. Plus Xander wants Angel/Angelus dead, always has.

Um, Buffy and Riley? Definitely no love returned there...(Sadly. Heehee.) I don't feel like they were incompatible, Buffy just wasn't wanting a serious relationship and Riley didn't want to be on stand-by until she was.

This! Obviously Buffy still felt something since she ran to try and stop Riley. But was it really love? Or just that she was afraid she'd lose something she needed? Whatever it was we'll never know since she didn't get there in time.

As for the OP's question, I would have to go with Fred & Gunn.

Exactly. Xander's such a douche.

Fred and Gunn definitely fall under this category. I don't think Xander and Anya fell out of love, though. The only other example I can think of is Spike and Dru--they clearly loved each other, but then Dru dumped him because she could see he had fallen for Buffy.

She knew who Whistler was. She said so. And, once again, her reaction time could've been faster if she thought that there was an opportunity at a win-win situation. She thought it was crap either way, walking into that fight.

Sorry. Just read that. ^^

I always felt that Willow and Oz fell out of love, just at different speeds. Yeah, okay their relationship ended because of Veruca, but you can't deny that Willow was still in love with Oz even during all of that until she met Tara and began falling in love with her. Hell, I'd say Willow loved Oz until after New Moon Rising, where in that episode she had to decide did she love Tara and/or Oz and if it was an "and" situation, did she want to see what this new thing went or have to re-work through all of the pain she endured with Oz.

And Oz still loved Willow but learned to let her go and fell in love with someone else.

Spike fell out of love with Dru. And in hindsight I think it's possible he fell out of love with her before he met Buffy and what he felt for Dru when we first met Spike was love and loyalty and the kind of devotion you feel to someone you have loved for a long time. Dru might have sensed that and perhaps that's one of the reasons she made plain her preference for Angel: she wanted to make Spike feel jealous and once again in competition with Angel.

Buffy and Angel are complicted, too. While obviously there was real feeling between them still in 8, I wonder if by that time they were more like Dru and Spike during the latter part of 2, in love with the idea of their love.
