Family friendly?

I'll preface this by stating I am not in any way attempting to bitch and moan or "challenge" the mods...I'm just genuinely curious...

I had one post edited today and one deleted for what, to me, seemed like relatively innocent PG-rated sex comments. It's obviously the mods who have to decide what is and isn't appropriate for their board, and I respect that and will attempt to abide by their wishes...but I'm a little confused why on the board for a show that frequently had sexual content (sometimes very adult sexual content), why the mention of "good sex" warrants a post being edited? I mean, BTVS and Angel weren't always "family friendly" shows, so I'm just curious why such a strong effort is made to make this a "family friendly" board to the extent that inoffensive and harmless comments are censored? I understand there's a line, I just don't believe it was crossed...

Like I said, I'm not trying to be bratty or irritating or start a problem, I just wanted to hear thoughts from both members and mods...?

Afterall, those of us with dirty minds need a little love too! 😀

yes we do :)
I've had a few posts edited, but ... can't really say what I wrote as it would be edited again, I so I understand why it was edited.

But like you say, BtVS and AtS are quite adult shows in some ways, so I'd think the viewers/fans would be able to handle a little dark comedy/sexual content.

But, I guess it depends on the context, some people could find certain posts really offensive and others may find it hilarious, i'm usually always on the hilarious side.

..and there are some young members here, it's not fair to them, I think this is a really good board because of the way it's moderated.

You had a post deleted? Interesting. I've only had posts deleted because there was already a thread somewhere for it.

Well, it would be nice if we knew what we weren't allowed to talk about or say. I'm sure we'd all be happy to comply. I really respect the mods that run this place, and I certainly don't want to offend anyone. Different people have different ideas of that is appropriate, I guess. As SpoonsAreCool said, we all take things different ways. I've said some borderline things...but I have not had a post deleted for sexual comments I made.

I guess what I'm saying is, if we are not allowed to talk about and/or say certain things on here, it would be helpful if these 'rules' were clearly stated 🙂

Yes those things were covered in the show but the show was on at a certain timeslot that the networks felt would suit it best and avoid the younger members. We don't have that luxury we are here 24/7 and the main difference being we cannot regulate what happened on the show but we can regulate what happens here. The bottom line is that we are responsible for what is posted here so we take what action we think necessary to ensure the boards are enjoyable for all.

I know the posts you are referring to and you were not the only one to have posts edited. As always if you want to discuss your situation further then please contact myself or Buffy Summers.

Also we don't have a rule about chat about sexual content, that is partly covered but the no use of 'offensive, obscene or profane language'. All we ask is that you think before you post and use your common sense.

Good points, Faith...but isn't it arguable that if someone has watched the series, or is in the process of watching it, that they're obviously capable of handling material of a similar (and in this case, incredibly less severe) nature?

Nothing I said constituted offensive, obscene, or profane language...so maybe there need to be clearer guidelines about what is acceptable and what is not. Common sense didn't dictate to me that mentioning "good sex" was inappropriate. But then again, I operate with no filter so maybe I'm just deluded...

I agree if this is really an issue - there should be clearer guidelines...

How can someone obviously be capable of handling things they haven´t seen yet? It´s not like you know until afterwards. Not that I´m disagreeing with you as a whole but that phrasing sounds funny to me.

And you want specifics for what you can or can´t write? If your common sense don´t work one would think that after a (possible) few deleted/edited posts you should start to learn the limits.

What did I do to incur your wrath? I made a perfectly innocent, fair comment and I get my head bitten off by someone who isn't even a mod...

The point I was making is that if someone is old enough to watch the show, and is watching it, and is not turned off by the material, then they're not gonna have a problem with innocent sexual humor. I doubt someone is gonna watch the first 5 seasons, then get to season 6 and say "whooooa nelly, this is too much for me!" The show does get more adult in content in its later years but not drastically moreso...

Common sense only works to a certain degree when you clearly have a different definition of what constitutes "appropriate" than the people who are managing the board. I already monitor myself to a very high degree, I'm on much better behavior here than I am on other boards...

Now I would appreciate it if you have a problem with me to dish it out via PM rather than looking for an out to snap at me on a thread where I was being perfectly reasonable and respectful.

You consider that to get your head bitten off? I guess that means I have a mod on my back any second. It wasn´t intended even close to be either harsh or personal. But of course intention isn´t automatically how it´s seen by others...
At another Buffy board I was a member of, we had an over 18's room, which you needed approval to gain entry to. It was a great place to vent, tell dirty jokes, say what you really wanted to say. I can understand it might be difficult as the member is responsible for remembering which room they are in when they post a comment, but it seemed like a good compromise for the members and family nature of the board.

Is there any scope for something like that here? I've managed long enough without it, so I can understand if it's a no go area, but it could be a fun outlet for some of us who are a little more frisky!

I apologize if that wasn't your intention, it just seemed a little...bitey. Though I generally tend to have a decently-sized hate club wherever I go so maybe I tend to see vitriol on impulse...LOL.

Gotta disagree with this part - this actually happened to me at first viewing. After the first airing of "Wrecked", I had to drop out of watching as all the sex and addiction stuff simply hit home too much for me at the time. There's nothing remotely as "heavy" in seasons 1-5.

Something said on a show is different than a it is being written. The way a character says something although it is intended in a adult manner it can also mean something different to a younger viewer.

Rocko's Modern Life did this a lot.

Your posts were edited as part of an exchange that we felt didn't belong here - if we do it to one then we do it to all.

I'll say it again, we are responsible for what is posted here, slightly different than what someone watches on tv. I don't think it is too much to ask that you keep things clean.

Kali - I know the forum you are talking about and a few years back we had thought about doing the same but after a lot of discussion it was thought it would be more of a liability.

If you want to have a more adult type of chat then by all means use a site that allows it, we have to think about the community as a whole and that means looking out for the younger members.

I just don't see something like that as necessary and I don't think having a kind of a clique just for the older members is a good idea.

You get a PM when your post is edited or deleted
Not sure about edited but if it gets deleted they send a pm. Oh, yeah. I got a deleted post. You know I´m bad...

I won´t say why though but LM theory about the mods being out to get me (or at least look bad) might be in order since a lot of other people have done the same and their posts are still here. The last person to do it? Friendly lurker...

And if anyone didn´t get it the first spoiler is a joke. Not the part of other exaclty the same posts are still here. That´s true. But about the mods.

Not a stupid question at all. Typically if I recall you do recieve a PM letting you know, and you can also see at the bottom of the post whether or not it has been edited by anyone. So per say if I was to edit your post, there would be a line above the "Edit" and "Quote" buttons that would read...

Last edited by ~angelic slayer~; Today at 12:24 PM. Reason: Spelling and Grammar

It always shows who edited it and the time, as well as the reason that it was edited. If you're looking for an example, take a look at The Kinslayer's post before mine: a double post by him merged and created a "Post Edited" line.

Either way, no need to worry. If a post is edited you will know about it 🙂
