Family...Spike hits Tara

I just watched this episode and I have to say... who cares? Seriously, why id this topic even up right now? I'm sorry, but I am really not seeing the point of this. The whole "what kind of demon is she" is just saying that Tara's family has no idea about what a real demon is.

the point was, why would spike hit her if they all thought she was a demon all ready, he couldnt find out what type of demon she was by doing that.

Obviously taras family doesnt know what a demon is, her dad was all "what is that" when he saw the ones in the room with them the reason they just said the whole demon thing was to control the women in there family.

Because he's just... Spike. And no one really cared what kind of demon she was except for Anya...

I realize that.

This really isn't all that complicated.

Spike isn't stupid. He has street smarts. Anya does to. Anya realised that the family weren't making sense so asked what kind of demon she was, trying to trip up her family. Spike cottoned on to what Anya was inferring and realised the best way to find out for sure if she was demon or not was to punch her.

But Tara did the spell so they couldn't see the demon part of her and only the human part of her. Tara was only 'part demon' and she wanted that part to keep hidden. So with the spell the Scoobies still could see Tara, just not both sides of her.
I was starting to think that everybody had forgotten that. Thanks.

I love this episode but upon reflection Spike's move seems like a bit of a plothole. If Spike doesn't know if Tara is part-demon or not, how could his chip know? The only thing this test should have proven is whether Spike thought Tara was a demon or not. Of course, this "chip" has shown some quite amazing qualities over the course of the show, so maybe I am wrong and it actually differentiates between people and...other living creatures.

My question here is, if before spike punched her, they all thought she was part demon, and Anya was just trying to figure out what kind, why would Spike hit her then?
His chip wouldn't have told him what kind of demon she was, right? Being a demon would have just let him hit her with out being in pain. And they all ready thought she was a demon.

Well, Spike always likes an excuse to hit something, right? He just wanted to be sure.

Thats what i've been wondering!

Anya asked what TYPE of demon she was, not if she WAS a demon or not. So i dont see why he would go up to her and hit her to figure it out, unless i'm missing another part to that.

The very purpose of Spike's chip is that it keeps him from hurting humans, if he tries he recieves a huge jolt of pain. It doesn't much matter what Spike might have theorized about Tara, it has nothing to do with his thoughts... as soon as he hits her one of two things will happen: he will get the jolt of pain if she is human or he won't if she is a demon. That is the function of the chip.

And, Wiccaness, Spike didn't go up to hit Tara because Anya asked what type of demon she was and he thought hitting her would help him figure it out (in fact I think when Anya asked that question of Tara's family she already herself had suspiscion that they were lying about it so she asked to catch them in that lie) I think Spike by this point had figured out that Tara's family was full of crap and using the demon story to keep women submissive, and since Spike isn't one for lengthy conversation he went in for the sure fire way of proving their lie.

This is actually a good point about the chip. It does seem to actually know what's a demon and what's a human. I'd always thought of it along the lines of it interpreted his intention in his brainwaves or something - like why he can make the motion to hit something so long as he knows he's not going to hurt it. But there are a few times where the chip actually knows more than Spike does - I'm thinking Family and Buffy post-Bargaining. That's quite a function it's got there.

I think what Spike was trying to do was reveal the demon inside tara, because when you hit vampires there face changes so maybe thats what he was trying to do i dont really know though its just the impression i always got

Is that true, though? They don't always vamp out when someone hits them, do they? Also, not all demons necessarily show themselves like that. I still think that both Anya and Spike had figured out the lie already. Spike just had the quick ('n painful) route to the truth.

That's how I've always looked at the chip, that it reacts to the subject de facto being human, not to his intention.

Maybe but how can a chip know who is a demon and who is not? I have watched only about half of the first season of AtS, but there seems to be a lot more of demons pretending to be humans than in Buffy and detecting them seems quite a challenge. If the Initiative can detect demons just by some computrized device, how come Buffy's evil roommate was not found earlier? I seem to recall riley and his men hunting some demon (or was it vampire) and detecting it by its body temperature, not by soem device which magically measures "demonity".

Well, actually, the entire function of the chip (including creating intense pain when the subject intends to hurt a human (pointing a gun, for example) is one of the fictions that requires suspension of belief, as much as the existence of vampires and demons does. The implication of the show is that such a chip was an experimental technology developed by a large team of heavily-funded military scientists, not something that Buffy and her gang could have purchased at the local corner store to detect demons such as her roommate.

I lazily agree and therefore do not write a post of my own.
I love it how Spikes character sees and understands soo much, i'd even wager he sees more then Xander...i mean even from season 3 for example in Lovers Walk, he knows that Buffy and Angel can't JUST be friends, "And I can fool Giles, and I can fool my friends, but I can't fool myself. Or Spike, for some reason." I believe that Spike hit Tara because he'd figured it out, he saw through Mr Maclays charade and worked away to prove it...he used the chip as a method of proving she was human...which i think he already knew she was.

Well if Spike was a vampire, he should have been able to smell her and tell if she was part demon, right?? I mean, Angel always could smell someone and tell if their blood was human or other. Shouldn't Spike be able to do that? I always thought he hit her just to prove a point to everyone in the room. I always loved how he told her dad he was evil and then was like "I like you". LOL
