Fantasy/sci fi recommendations

Buffy was the first show to get me into the sci fi type genre. Since then I've seen past the funny make up to view a fair few good stories. I need a reminder of what is worth the watch, a list of gems.

Is anyone familiar with fantasy/sci fi/spiritual stories, featuring other worlds and abilities but with solid characters and lore?

My violence/gore/horror tolerance is low, and I can't seem to pay attention to animations, but besides that I'll give whatever I can get my hands on a look. Even fanfic (if its decent and not just smut.) I am Open to movie suggestions too but I'd love to have a new series (book or show) to emmerse myself in once I finish Teen Wolf. The kind of stories that make you think, are exciting and other worldy.

Massive BSG fan, seen most of Star Trek. The shows with telepathy or Xmen type powers always appeal but few live up to expectations. Outside of fandom the idea of life on other planets before and after this one also appeals, energy healing, wonders of earth etc so suggestions do not have to be strictly fiction.

Any suggestions?

The original Heroes tv series comes to mind for me. It was the first fantasy drama I really loved since Buffy, even though it had a lot of flaws. Season 1 was the best, though I thought the later seasons were still fun to watch in a guilty pleasure sort of way.

If you’re fan of the Terminator films, the Sarah Connor Chronicles is worth watching, even though it ends after just two seasons on a cliffhanger.

Yes 😀 loved it and recommend the show. It had as many laughs as whoas. I saw the movie years back but the show will be a rewatch-er down the line. Still lots to get my head around in that one too, good one 🙂

There's a fantastic book series by Sergei Lukyanenko that starts with Nightwatch (then there's Daywatch, Twilight Watch, the Last Watch etc). There are Russian films of Nightwatch and Daywatch which I really love, though I recommend watching the dubbed versions rather than reading the subtitles because otherwise you miss what's going on for the reading.

To very much oversimplify, there are supernatural beings called The Others who have special powers. And there is sort of a police force for each, the Nightwatch polices the Dark Others at night (so like the gangsters, vampires, general bad guys), and the Daywatch polices the Light Others (the "good guys") during the day. Others can choose their side but once chosen they can't change.

What types of films are covered?
Too my mind Fantasy means subjects that are not of reality. When is a subject deemed to be or not to be (W. Shakespeare not included) non-fiction
Sci-Fi is as far as I'm concerned Science Fiction and as such is not Supernatural.
How about The Dark Side of the Moon, or the film Event Horizon with an honourable mention to Interstellar. If you like some fantasy with your Sci-Fi then I'd reccommend the film Stranded.

I would strongly recommend the show Farscape. In many ways it is similar to Buffy; it does many of the same things very well. Plus, the main cast is full of interesting and exceptional characters, and each undergoes worthwhile development.

I also really like a newer show called The Expanse. I cheated and skipped to S3 with a friend, and so far I've loved it. There is a lot of tension and drama in each episode.

Just thought I should mention that Event Horizon is a horror film set on a space ship
The Dark Side of the Moon is also a horror film.
Think I've said this one before but The Fourth Kind is a Sci-Fi horror.

I had problems when I did as the leader of the terrorists was the good guy Jaffa with Teal'c from Stargate and he looked exactly the same.

I assume you're already familiar with The Twilight Zone. Game of Thrones, but it's quite violent. I am a big fan of Xena: Warrior Princess, but you'd need to go into it with the realization that it's a fantasy version of history/mythology and there is a lot of light-hearted and even silly stuff alongside the often very intense drama. Low budget, but very well done and a great deal of chemistry among the actors.

For literature... anything by Ray Bradbury. Anything by Isaac Asimov, especially the Foundation series.

The "Otherland" series by Tad Williams is possibly my favorite SF series. And his "Memory, Sorrow and Thorn" trilogy is my favorite fantasy apart from Tolkien.

The Jame series by P.C. Hodgell (kind of an obscure one... the first book is "God Stalk" which I love.)

Individual books... The Face in the Frost by John Bellairs, The Princess Bride by William Goldman (also the movie), The Circus of Dr. Lao by Charles G. Finney.

If I had to recommend one non-animated fantasy movie, it would be Labyrinth.

When I was a teenager I read a book called The Anubis Gates, which I loved. It's a mix of history, fantasy, and Sci fi, as far as I can remember. It may be gory - I have no internal barometer for gore. 😅 But it was a good yarn!

Outlander is a great watch! I just finished watching the second season and I'm loving it so far. It's a good mix of history with sci-fi, so if you're into that, I'd definitely recommend it.

Also, Stan Against Evil. Its hilarious as well as the Netflix show Santa Clarita Diet very hilarious
