Fargo S2 is So Great!

To guys who watched S1 but forgot to check S2:
It's a story about Molly's dad. He already kicks more ass than Molly and Lorne combined so far.

To guys who hasn't watched S1:
You don't have to watch S1 to enjoy it since each season tells a totally different story with minimum cross-reference. But I recommend both.

Fargo is a very very different kind of TV show. It's a show that the audience has the god's view. The audience knows much more then the characters. All information kept from characters is shown to the audience up-front. The entertainment comes not from guessing and plot twist enjoyment, but watching characters, strong or weak, faulty or competent, making mistakes one after another. Plus, the sense of humor and irony is very subtle and well done.
 
I have been meaning to watch the Fargo TV show! My friend was recently commenting that s2 is, so far, much better than s1.

It's on Netflix, eh? I'll finish my Buffy rewatch then start this next I think.

Both seasons are on hulu. I don't know if it's on Netflix.

If you haven't watched yet, I want to say S1 is very good as well. "S2 is better than S1" is like "Hush is better than Prophecy Girl", unlike "Hush is better than Beer Bad".
 
Well I really loved the first season so am keen to catch up with the new one. I do wonder if it should have been left as a stand alone, but will be interested to see what the new cast/characters bring to it.

The relation between S1 and S2 is like the relation between S1 and the movie: same genre, same atmosphere, similar setting of some key recurring character's types, and same town(s). The story and characters are almost totally unrelated.

Each one is a stand alone. The references are just easter eggs. For new watchers of S2, the lack of watching experience of the movie or S1 matters 0%.🙂

Agree with that last point. And that was part of the problem is that a lot people couldn't get the film out of their heads and just held the show up to that, which wasn't really fair. I'd say the first season at least got some of the black comedy and darkness of the film, while still doing its own thing. I thought the casting was really good, and although it dragged a bit in places than the storytelling was strong too.
 
Enjoying Fargo S2 a little more than S1 (although that was excellent), but then I do have a weakness for period set shows of pretty much any era if their done well.
 
The style and tone changed a lot in the last two episodes (7, 8). They put a bunch of action (predictable) and mystery elements (hiding information from us) into it. I don't know but it's not like a Fargo show anymore. Maybe it's a good thing, maybe not.

I would hold my patience for the whole season to end so that I can give it a proper rating.
 
Agreed. it changed the whole tone in the last few episodes. Not really as good, lost a lot of the nuance.

They also (predicably) took a needless swipe at Reagan. Because he was a Republican president and therefore no good in any way. No matter that people are living in the ruins of Carter's America.
 
Bokeem Woodbine is awesome in it. So is Discount Matt Damon.

As a (slightly) pro-Reagan person, I actually don't mind too much. I found it more like a generic bashing on politician caricatures (jargon words, reciting for speech, can't answer non-staged questions, etc). For example, having a non-white character die in a movie doesn't mean the writer hates minorities.

Why not Carter then? Because beating a dead horse is too yawn-y.

But its of the Carter era of America and they ignore him and slam Reagan as an empty suit.
That, to me, shows that writers always have a large bias when it comes to US politics.
I mean, its not they get tired of picking on Nixon now is it? So why isn't Carter fair game?
 
I love this season of Fargo, but I haven't seen season 1. And I have really enjoyed the last few episodes way more that the beginning episodes. This weeks was one of my favorites. The whole cast is killing it, and KD, NO, and TD are some of my favorite characters. This week's episode gave me hope for TV after the disappointing Walking Dead MSF.

I have no problem with it. "This is a true story..." then UFOs. Perfect irony.

Plus the UFOs did not change the overall plot. It had some consequences in the gunshot battle but anyway.

Peggy said "It's just a flying sauce". This line is very meta. It's talking to the audience: "It's just a flying sauce, don't make a fuss and over-analyze it, or you will die like those gangsters and cops who were distracted by it."

Finished.

The last episode, except for having some preachy moments (the Lou/Pegg conversation in the police car and the universal-language discussion), it is very good.

S1 is a tight story about how the devil brings out the worst of originally innocent people. S2 is kinda messier (plot, theme, music choice, pacing: all worse). However S2 rendered side characters much better. Personally I like it, but I don't like it as much as S1.
