Meet Michael Fassbender as Callum Lynch in Assassin’s Creed.

Based on the massively popular — and prolific — video-game series of the same name, the movie version is set to open in theaters Dec. 21, 2016.

Before hardcore Assassin's Creed gamers start scratching their heads (and filling up the comments) about how exactly Callum Lynch fits into the game world, we can tell you that Fassbender’s character was created specifically for the film. (The movie isn’t retelling any of the existing games, but rather introducing new characters into the same world.)

Lynch discovers he is a descendant of the secret Assassins society through unlocked genetic memories that allow him to relive the adventures of his ancestor, Aguilar, in 15th Century Spain. After gaining incredible knowledge and skills he’s poised to take on the oppressive Knights Templar in the present day.

Also starring Marion Cotillard (The Dark Knight Rises), Michael Kenneth Williams (12 Years a Slave), and Ariane Labed (Before Midnight), cameras start rolling for Assassin's Creed on Monday. Filming is set to happen in Malta, London, and Spain.

Me too. As well as being an amazing actress even in lesser films. I so have the hots for her! She's stunning and that accent really does it for me!😛 If you have not seen them yet Gwen you should watch 2 Days, 1 Night and Rust and Bone.

As for this I the cast make it tempting, but films based on computer games pretty much never work, and this sort of genre doesn't normally interest me.

Humph, I wanted a video of Fassbender playing Assassin's Creed and getting all irate about it. 🙁

...Still, this is good news. Hopefully it will escape the 'movies based on video games are utter wank' curse.
 
Assassin's Creed is just some game I used to buy for my brother so I know nothing about it other than the cover. However... I will admit to having a bit of a crush on Fassbender! So if there's a movie, my brother'll wanna see it anyway and if Fassbender's in it then, well, goodie for me 😀
 
I tried playing some Assassin's Creed games in the past but it's just not my cup of tea - to put it bluntly, the gameplay sucks in my opinion. However, I love the fact that this franchise is so incredibly popular. Why? Because it popularizes history. Of course, not to the extend of Paradox games but the educational factor is still definitely there.
 
The producers of Assassin’s Creed have announced that Brendan Gleeson and Jeremy Irons have signed on to appear in the film. The pair will be playing a couple of dads in the murder-friendly thriller, with Irons playing Marion Cotillard’s father, and Gleeson playing Michael Fassbender’s.

Wow.. they are getting a rather interesting cast assembled for a video game movie: Fassbender, Marion Cotillard, Michael Kenneth Williams, Jeremy Irons and Brendan Gleeson.
 
This has a great cast. Have not played the games myself but have seen a couple of them and i like the period time of it. So hopefully this will be good.
 
According to TrackingBoard they've a sequel already in the works already:

The adaptation of the blockbuster video game Assassin’s Creed from New Regency isn’t set to bow until December, but The Tracking Board has learned that the company is officially underway with plans for the sequel, ASSASSIN’S CREED 2. With star Michael Fassbender on board, the stage is set for a new action-adventure franchise starring the two-time Academy Award nominee.

The sequel sees familiar names from the yet-to-be-released title’s production team, with Jean-Julien Baronnet producing for Ubisoft Motion Pictures, Frank Marshall producing through his Kennedy-Marshall Company, while Fassbender and Conor McCaughan will produce through their DMC Films shingle. Matt Phelps will oversee for Ubisoft, while Pam Abdy will oversee for New Regency.

Director Justin Kurzel’s forthcoming action-adventure story stars Fassbender and Marion Cotillard – the three of whom worked together previously on last year’s critically acclaimed MacBeth. Fassbender plays Callum Lynch, a man who discovers that he’s the descendant of a secretive society of deadly assassins, who are at war with the Knights Templar. Through a machine, Lynch becomes able to tap into the memories of his ancestor Aguilar, an assassin in 15th century Spain. Commanding his ancestor’s incredible skills, ability, and knowledge, Lynch sets forth to take on the Knights Templar in the present.

The film takes its name from the mega-popular Ubisoft video game series, though the storyline involving Lynch/Aguilar was created specifically for the film. The movie won’t be a retelling of games’ stories, but will exist in the same world.

That the studio is already laying the groundwork for the sequel is hardly surprising, given the international appeal of both the game and its star, Fassbender. But skeptics of video game-based films may interpret this move as a sign of confidence from those involved that, unlike previous attempts to bring popular video game properties to the big screen, Assassin’s Creed could not only work – but thrive. The hefty $125 million budget, which includes financing from co-financiers like Alpha Pictures International and Brett Ratner’s RatPac Entertainment, is all the more reason to get started on a sequel, as Regency Enterprises, distributor 20th Century Fox and the bevy of investors involved will want to pounce any momentum that the film finds at the box office.

The mostly positive reactions to the first images of Fassbender as the Lynch/Aguilar character may have further fueled producers to initiate plans for a sequel. Previous attempts to launch franchises based on Tomb Raider, Prince of Persia, and Silent Hill have yielded lackluster results, to say the least, but as the pictures of Fassbender spread across social media, they quickly prompted some to announce that 2016 could be the year that video game adaptations break their losing streak – the latest trailer for World of Warcraft from Duncan Jones has somewhat quelled that hopeful spirit.

Assassin’s Creed is set to hit theaters on December 21st, 2016.​
 
Great cast, Fassbender can do no wrong in my eyes.
 
Great cast! But I'm always doubtful of video games to movie adaptations.

Hex was so good! I rewatched it recently and it was a little cheesy, but he was by far the best thing in it. Show went downhill in S2 unfortunately. I bought the DVD boxset off Amazon for 50p!
