Father's Day Gifts

The pleasure of my company 😛

I’m probably gonna get my dad some crossword magazine and his favorite candy 🙂
 
I usually take my Dad out to our favourite South African restaurant for some steak and red wine. I'm struggling as to what to get him right now, he has everything he needs.

What's South African food like? I've never really heard anyone talk about it? You eat giraffes and what not?

Hmm i've not had any giraffes!

Being Scottish i'm not sure i'm qualified to give an indepth review but I believe its all to do with how the meat is cooked and seasoned. My friend keeps saying when I go back to London he will do a braai for me, which I understand to be similar to a BBQ. I don't think it can be considered a braai if it is indoors because of the grill or something along those lines. If anyone knows different please correct me!

I've had a lot of steak in my life but this place wins hands down.

Don't get smart. I've only been to two SA places and they are in my own country, i've not experienced it in the country itself. I'm also not a great food critic, I just know its the best damn steak and ribs i've ever had. My knowledge is limited, so there you go, that is my review 🙂
 
In my experience, SA cooking means there is a lot of meat. To me, who was a student on a two month field trip to whom food was sustenance, a braai was sustenance with added good company and different spices from what I was used to.

That was a sidenote, though. If I were to get my father something for father's day, which I normally don't, it would probably be some nifty hiking gear. Seeing as he is an old leftie who raised this a little less old leftie, though, we largely agree that father's day is a commercial concept. Hence I can forget it without feeling too bad about my qualifications as offspring.
 
I agree it is a commercial concept, thats part of the reason I always choose to do something with him to make a memory rather than a golfing glove he will never use.

Regarding doing things: I have watching rugby with you on the list of things I would love to do when I finally get to visit Edinburgh again.
Oh, my mother would be fine with not doing anything, but my dad expects something even though he has no hobbies or interests.
 
It's extremely unfair when you think about it. You have Mother's Day and Father's Day in which they get gifts, and then their respective birthdays. But there is no Offspring Day. The kids are getting the short end of the stick only getting one day when each parent gets two.

My mom is the same way, but my dad doesn't need presents, he just wants the day to be acknowledged. I spent it at his place but didn't bring any gift with me.
