I was curious to know what kind of books the BB's read so I want to know who your favorite authors are.

Here are some of mine (I'm an avid reader so I'm in no way listing all of the authors I read but just a few of my great favorites...)

I also like a bunch of the ones you listed. Two authors that I've been reading a lot of lately are Jane Austen and Amelia Atwater Rhodes.
 
Well, I adore Laurell K. Hamilton (Mostly the Merry Gentry series, though, not so much on Anita Blake, although I like that too), JRR Tolkien, JK Rowling, Starhawk, Ted Bell....that's about it for specific authors. Generally, I just read whatever sounds good!

Since I mostly read Swedish book up until pretty recently, most of my favourite authors are Swedish (Anna Jörgensdotter, Marianne Fredriksson, Johanna Nilsson, Per Nilsson and many more). But I do of course love JK Rowling.. And I would mention Joyce Carol Oates even though that's pretty much only because of Foxfire. And I guess Dan Brown even though that's got nothing to do with the way he writes but the stories he tell..

I don't read much fiction these days, honestly.

I like Ray Bradbury, Dickens, Jack London, Edgar Allan Poe...it's the mood created and the writing style as much as characater and plot for me.

Non-fiction I like Brian Greene, Christopher Hitchens, Jared Diamond, Joseph J Ellis, CS Lewis, too many...

Yeah, I like him too. Can't stand his writing style, but he does tell a good story!


Y'all reminded me of more that I like; Orwell, Ray Bradbury, Edgar Allen Poe, Henry Thoreau.

Wow, I'm so happy to see so many other book lovers!

The Blue: I'm so glad to find another Campbell fan. He was a student of Tolkein after all. I just got finished reading The Hero with a Thousand Faces again in my college Mythology class. It was interesting to discuss it with others and to hear what parts they agreed with and what parts they didn't.

I so forgot about Anne Rice and Douglas Adams. I love Pandora and the Hitchhiker series.

Anchovy: I love LKH. I read AB:VH first but Meredith Gentry is very exciting. I'm enthralled with them both equally. Have you tried Kim Harrison's vampire hunter series? The first book is entitled Dead Witch Walking. Its pretty good. Not as good as LKH, but definitely good for a laugh.

Does anybody else read any mythological works? I especially love greek myths.

Anita, I didn't see your question before but I have read Homer's Iliad and Odyssey. I love Greek mythology too, but haven't read as much as I'd have liked.
 
Yeay for all the Pratchett lovers. I really wanna read his latest book, but have no money to buy it with.

Best fantasy, pure fantasy I've read Robin Hobb, she's freakin amazing.

For some poetry I'd have to say Edgar Allan Poe, love what I've read of him.
 
Do you all sense that, as a generalization, perhaps females are more into reading fiction? Just as a pastime? I suspect viewers of these boards may not be typical, but...

Just thinking, guys are maybe off playing videogames or what have you.

And also, I wonder if more males than females are into reading nonfiction: straightforward history, war stories, pop science, etc.

I know science fiction is huge with guys, but it seems like fantasy, sci-fi in general gets more popular with women all the time.

I agree I work at Barnes and Noble (one of my jobs) and women generally read more fiction. Your right this board may be not be typical but in general I think you are right.

And so the selection of Fantasy books change. A few years back it was almost impossible to find a Fantasy book with a female heroinne. Today the majority of new Fantasy's got female leads in them. And it's not all a change to the better, still got all that crap fantasy floating around and being pretentious and uninteresting.
 
Maybe I don't follow the norm, I've been a HUGE sci-fi fan since I read my first sci-fi book......Fahrenheit 451. From there I was off and running, all of Bradbury, Isaac Asimov, Orwell, Herbert, Jules Vern, Piers Anthony, what's the name of the guy who wrote Battlefield: Earth (?), Julian May. Also that one who wrote that series.....dang, it's been a long time ago....I remember he was big into Scientology. Anyway, I also like fantasy, historical romances (hey, brain's gotta rest once in a year!), adventure, history, mythology and I love love love cloak and dagger spy novels!
