What was your favorite episode for Buffy's birthday (before she happen to decide not to have them anymoe, what with the people getting killed and all)

I think, based on the quality of the episode alone, my answer would be Helpless. It's just a fantastic dramatic piece of television. But my favorites to watch would be either A New Man or Older and Far Away. Just like Zobo ....surprise, surprise!

It was a hard decision for me, between Older and Far Away and A New Man.

I love them both, but ended up choosing A New Man because of how much it makes me laugh. Poor Giles, accidentally putting holes in his apartment. . .
 
Hard choice. For me it's between Older and Far Away and surprise. I love both the episodes so much but they are so different so how can you choose?
 
I went with Helpless. I just think it's a well-done episode, and I love the part when Giles gets fired for being more like a father than a Watcher to Buffy. And then he cleans her wounds for her. 🙂
 
Helpless. Great episode. Awesome Giles/Buffy scenes. 🙂 Surprise isn't bad either! And too bad there wasn't a birthday episode in S7.
 
I chose "Helpless" because I think that it is a better episode overall, but my favorite "Buffy birthday" moment is in "Surprise", when Joyce and Buffy talk about Buffy growing up. Great acting by Kristine and Sarah, and I love the look of the scene.
 
Although I love Surprise, I had to go with Helpless. I just find this episode to be really creepy plus the Buffy/Giles scenes are amazingly flawless. I love the concept & I thought it was done really well.
 
Helpless wins out for me. I always enjoy seeing a hero falling to pieces before picking themselves up again and kicking ass. It added great tension to the episode seeing Buffy as a normal human having to fight a particularly creepy Vampire in Jeff Kober. Kober has an excellent screen presence IMO and always does well portraying creepy/evil dudes.

Buffy demonstrated that even without her powers she's still a strong individual and isn't some helpless waif who'll just roll over when the going gets tough cementing her place as a good role model in my books. I also liked how it strengthened Buffy and Giles' relationship despite him betraying her trust.
 
It was really hard to pick. Surprise and Helpless are both such fantastic episodes but I finally ended up casting my vote for Helpless. It carries such a pathos, SMG does a great job in the ep, and seeing how Buffy reacts to a lack of superpowers (though frequently claiming a desire to be a normal girl) is simply fascinating. The betrayal of Giles, the fact that she wins without any brawn and of course the final "you have a father's love for the child" brings so much to not only the episode but to the verse itself that I don't think I could ever get sick of this episode. 🙂
 
It says I've already voted on the poll but I can't quite remember what I voted for. On reflection, although I enjoyed Suprise, I preferred Innocence as an episode and I see those as a two-parter!! I loved Helpless because it really developed Giles's character and Kralik is an amazing villain, really terrifying in parts! So I would probably choose that! However I remember loving Blood Ties! The quote at the end is amazing:

Buffy: Are you okay? Did she hurt you?
Dawn: Why do you care?
Buffy: Because I love you. You're my sister.
Dawn: No I'm not.
Buffy: Yes you are. (She points out the blood on Dawn's hand.) Look, it's blood. It's Summers blood. (She presses her hand against the wound on her shoulder, and clasps her bloody hand in Dawn's bloody hand.) It's just like mine. It doesn't matter where you came from, or-or how you got here. You are my sister. (She pauses.) There's no way you could annoy me so much if you weren't.
