Favorite Character and Why?

I realize that people usually express their feelings about their favorite characters in their sigs and avy's, but idk, I haven't really ever seen a thread that actually asks why people like the person they like.

I like Tara because... Well, she's a strong, and independent woman. And, Tillow's my favorite ship, and I just like her.

Second favorites are Wesley, Fred, and... Dare I say it... Riley.


I can't wait to read people's in depth paragraph about Spike or Cordy. 🙂

Mine has to be willow, its just the way we see ehr character develop from a shy nobody at school into a strong powerful wiccan. There is so much her character has to give to the whole buffyverse and i love her for it. I also hink she is really cute with the way she talks etc. 🙂

I agree with all of this (and love your sig banner, BTW).

Also, Alyson had me wrapped around her little finger in terms of the emotional response she could get from me. Part of it was her very expressive face and part of it was the way she merged with the character so well... she was really good at selling the emotion.

Alyson as Willow was probably the most perfect piece of casting ever.

I'll admit, she wasn't my favorite from the very beginning...when I was first watching season 1, I liked Buffy the most. But by the middle of season 2, Willow had completely grown on me. I felt like I could relate to her more than I could to any of the other characters, but more importantly, I just loved her quirky personality. As the show went on, I started to like her even more, and I loved how, even though she was developing into this completely different character, her unique personality was completely evident throughout. Even though she did have her moments where I just went, "What are you THINKING?!" (mostly in seasons 6 and 7), you could always see that, at the core, she was still the dork we met in season 1. That's something you don't see in many characters, regardless of what show, book, or movie they're in.

I suspect this one will get old fast, but since I'm one of the first to post in this thread....

I find Spike fascinating. And no, it's not just the cheekbones or the abs, he really is one of the most interesting characters on Buffy. Right from the beginning we're set up with this completely simple view of vampires and evil. They lose their souls when they're turned, they become evil, and the Slayer must kill them. And of course, Spike is introduced to us following that exact same mold; he was a murderer, he wanted to kill Buffy, and Buffy therefore tried to kill him. Yet, at the same time he was always different in his treatment of Drusilla; he was incredibly loving for a monster who couldn't love. And for all his evilness, he was always... likable, and human, too. He could cry on Willow's shoulder and then threaten her with a broken bottle within the same scene, and none of it ever seemed out-of-character.

Then, of course, he gets the chip and falls in love with Buffy. While some Spike fans find that this ruined him, I actually enjoyed the development. He showed both a scary, obsessive, making-robots-of-her love, and a selfless, giving, I'd-die-for-her love, and all in the same episode!

He has nothing in him that says he should be good, and yet he does things that are innately right. His need to comfort Dawn (I always loved the scene when he reached for her, only to pull back when she turned his way), his willingness to walk into battle for Buffy and his increasingly changing personality always kept my interest. Here was a character who went against every single rule that Joss and Co. had built in the Buffy world, and I was captivated by that storyline.

Of course, I had a lot of complaints in subsequent seasons, but his journey always held my interest.

Fully agreed Kelsey! Spike is also my favorite character and I also find him quite fascinating. I don't think he was "ruined" at all by falling in love with Buffy. Loving her made him a better man.

I disagree with you on complaints though...about Spike? I loved every part of his arc. It was all nessesary for his development.

Although, I do object - this is a very hard question, The Ferg!! The Buffyverse is full of fantastic, complex and layered characters - I just have a soft spot for Spike.

A close second would have to be Buffy herself. She is my hero. She is a perfect modern representation of everything I look up to in a role model - she's brave, beautiful, loyal, smart, sweet, loving and... she's got razor sharp wit! (and of course pretty hair 🙂

Aha, mainly Season 7 and Ensouled Spike, but I won't get into all of it.

I agree! She's so strong not only physically, but in every other way as well. I've always loved characters who have the world balancing on their shoulders.

My favorite character is definetly Faith. I relate to her the most just in general. That's probably not a good thing but I always get where she is coming from. I like her darker nature & just how powerful & cunning she can be. I love that she has her flaws & they are really hard flaws to work through but she is a strong person & a fighter. She is a good person at heart, she's just pissed off at the world. Nobody could've played Faith the way Eliza did. She had such great charisma on screen with every single other character on Buffy & Angel.

Well, it's really hard for me to pick just one. So I'll name mine in order. 🙂

1. Anya. I adore this girl. I love her perspective, it's so interesting. I love her development, her humor, the comic relief she gives every scene. I love her naivety, but at the same time the way she can completely connect with human beings and their confusion and their struggle. Her speech in The Body is my favorite Buffy moment. I also love her speech to Andrew about why she fights. I think she understands humanity more than most, and seeing as how she spent 1000 years as a non-human, that's amazing.

2. Giles/Willow. Okay, I know I'm cheating, but oh well. 😛 Giles - for his humor, his guidance, his fatherly role to Buffy, his support, etc etc. Love him. And Willow, because she's adorable, funny, a true best friend, sensitive yet amazingly strong and powerful. Her development over the series is another amazing one.

3. Buffy. Despite her flaws, she really is my hero. She went from being a mini-Cordelia, pre-Slayerness, to being a true warrior who always puts others before herself, who does a job she didn't choose and doesn't necessarily like because it's her destiny. She's willing to sacrifice herself when she could just walk away, and I don't think many people at all can fully understand the magnitude of that. I admire her a lot, to put it simply.

I feel all nostalgic now. 🙂

OK i have a favorite character but its a close run thing! So i'll lsit them in order 🙂

1) Angelus-I know he's not in it alot of the time but when he is,especially in season 2 Buffy i just melt i love everything about him. His wicked grin and sense of humor! I'm in love lol! and he's just so cool and has the best lines, he's also one of the few people who is really a match for Spike 😀. I love the way he was brought about in season 2 such a sock and he had a real impact.

2) Drusilla/Darla-Both so wonderfully and wickedly evil! and Darla's character development is ace, even though i hate Connor! >.< and what happened to Drusilla!?!!? hmmmmm? surprise appearance in the comics?

3) Giles-I find him to be wonderfully old school English! and he says some of the funniest things and his facial expressions are ace! and i love how caring he is to everybody even Buffy who sometimes i really hated becuase of her treatment of Giles!

There's more good things i could say about them but i don't have the time or space enough to write! 😀

I don't actually know why Joyce has always been my favorite character. I mean I know now reasons why I currently like her but I can't really think or remember what made me like her in the first place. Maybe I'm just random?

If we talk main cast only (and by that I mean only those who featured in the credits) then my favorite is definitely Buffy. So many people say that Buffy is so rarely the favorite character because people cannot easily relate to her due to what she is and who she is, but I defy that because out of the Scoobies I always related the most easily to Buffy in every aspect of her life (Well, you know, except the Slayer thing. Obviously....) and I often- if not all the time- agreed with her decisions. I always empathized with her ultimately feeling alone in any situation despite any amount of her friends around her- I've felt that way so many times in my own life (not in a depressed loner type way though, really! Haha) that I found it easy to relate to her feeling that way also and so everything sort of stemmed from that I suppose. Plus, out of the main cast she was the only one that never made me get frustrated/annoyed. Even though admittedly Giles only made me annoyed once.

But out of the entire cast yeah, it's Joyce. But I don't know why and now that fact is really annoying me. I mean from the episode Witch I liked the character, by Prophecy Girl I loved her scenes and by the end of School Hard I had decided she kicked ass. But I don't know what made me like her in the first place! Argh! Now that's gonna bug me all day. All I knows now is that I like her scenes, she often shows the apple doesn't fall far from the tree (Snyder himself said about a mother/daughter resemblence) and she has a humor that seems to go over the other characters' heads a lot in the same way Giles' humor does. Plus she's the only person who seems able to retain relative innocence even after finding out the truth about all things demony and icky.

My favourite character is Cordelia. And I also don't really know why she's my favourite character. I don't even know exactly when she became my favourite character, because I remember at first Anya was my favourite character from the show (I started watching the late seasons, the early ones I only knew through the novels, you know, the Angel Chronicals, and the many novels that are set somewhere in season 3). I don't even think I liked Cordy that much. But then at some point I was thinking like 'Wow. Cordelia is really bitchy...actually, I like that!' and from then on she was my favourite character on BtVS. That was before I watched Angel at all (I had seen only one complete episode of Angel s3). But she is actually why I started watching Angel. I had seen some single episodes by then because of some other characters, like Faith, crossing over, but the show just bored me so much at that point that it was still not really worth watching. Then I got wind of this s5 episode, 'You're Welcome' and decided I had to see at least that one, because apparently it was very Cordelia. And after I was done with that episode I just wanted to see the whole show. And while I was doing that I fell even more in love with Cordy because I realized how much she had developed over the years. It's rare to see a (seemingly dumb) cheerleading high school bitca turn into a champion who fights for the greater good. And that's what got my really stuck on her character, I guess. She's like the epitome of character growth.
And how I later discovered, she was even a huge part of what kept me watching Angel. Remember these 3 episodes in s3 of Angel when she was absent? While watching those I was just thinking to myself 'I'm REALLY missing Cordy here'. And then later in s5 I even stopped watching the show after the episode where she died for a long time. At some point I did watch it, but I still feel sort of sad Cordy was missing.
So yea, that's what I like about Cordy, her bitcaness, her charactergrowth and how she really held the show together for me.

For me when i first started watching the show oz was my fave character i just love everything about the quiet character types i was instantly drawn to him with his rare phrases, quite unique and witty however as time progressed willow just stole the show for me, the character grew so much and alyson is no doubt the strongest actress on the show in my eyes and to portay the wide eyed sweet will in one ep to the dark eyed lost willow in another is just great, i think everyone can relate to willow they either are her or have a best friend just like her

For me it's Spike. It's already been explained well by others, so I won't go in too much detail, but - I love Spike for his complexity. I find him a fascinating character. I love the way he can do some utterly horrible and despicable stuff AS WELL AS some highly admirable and unselfish ones. Intervention is a prime example of this happening within a single episode. I love to watch his journey from monster to man, seeing him struggle with these conflicting instincts. Here I have to mention James Marsters who in many ways made Spike what he is. What an incredible actor - some of his scenes I'll watch again and again, just to see him at work. And such an expressive face!

I'm also growing more and more fond of Willow who, like Spike, goes on quite an amazing journey. And credit where credit is due: How fantastic is Alyson Hannigan. Although I suppose I may be a little biased as Alyson was the first woman I ever "fell for" and is at least partly responsible for making me realise my bisexuality. 😛

And lastly, I must also mention Giles. Just because... you know - Giles - he rocks. :biggrin:

Xander: he's the real heart of the scoobies... he's the only one who doesn't have magical powers, but he sure can't be missed. i don't know if i can relate or anything, he just has a great impression on me

Spike: first of all he's verygoodlooking, second of all his sence of humor is great, third of all the ships he got are the GREATEST ones on the show and well yeah I can go on with reasons 😀.

Cordelia: from bitch to sweet woman or something, she's just so lovely, so cordy 😛.

My top 4 characters are...

Faith - badass and just SO much fun; so much depth and Eliza Dushku is simply beautiful (and great at acting, of course! 😉 😛 : laugh : )

Darla - She's also so much fun, and I loved her in Season 3 with the soul growing inside her, and in Season 2 in "Reprise" when she sleeps with Angel. Love her all the time on AtS (hate her on Buffy)

Anya - Hilarious, Emma Caulfield is amazing! :heart: I really care about Anya. Ever since she first appeared as a sympathetic character in Season 5, I was deeply invested with her. Don't know why, but my love for her has grown. A lot.

Willow - Love her in the highschool years, is annoying when depressed, but other than that, a very fun character that is very likable.

1. Spike of course.
At first he's the cool, hot, bad guy then he becomes the funniest character in S4 and later it turns out he can be really sweet, cute and caring. Everytime you think now you know him, he becomes a completely different character. He changed so much during the show, has shown so many different sides of him and I love every single one! But one of the most amazing things about him is, no matter who it was, he always did everything for the persons he loved. If it was Cecily or his mother or Drusilla or Buffy. You could even count Dawn in it. He tried to do everything to please them and that's kind of sweet. And you just gotta love that accent!

2. Willow
She's sweet and cute and grew so much in those 7 seasons, it's amazing.

3. Anya
On the one hand she's one of the funniest characters in the Buffyverse who's strange and interesting and seems like she's never really afraid of anything (except bunnies) and is making fun of everybody who is scared. But then on the other hand she's just a scared little girl who can't deal with all the feelings she's feeling now that she's human again.
I'm so mad that they killed her!

4. Xander
I have to admitt that sometimes he's annoying and does really stupid things but I still love him because he's funny and his speaches are just heart-breaking.
