Favorite female rock singers

Everytime I turn on my local alternative radio station or the classic/hard rock station, I'm disappointed at the lack of female voices. Obviously I love Amy Lee & Evanescence, and I like Paramore and No Doubt/Gwen Stefani, but I'd like more suggestions for alternative, hard rock or heavy metal acts with female singers.

Obviously there are plenty of female pop, R&B, alt-folk, & country singers, I do like all those genres but that's not what I'm asking about here.
 
My favorite female voice is Brody Dalle from The Distillers. Can imagine not all liking her kind of voice though.

I'm also a huge fan of The Donnas and L7. So that's what I recommend. 🙂

Agree with this. Also I'd suggest L7, they're a bit grungy I guess you could say but you should give "Bricks are heavy" a try.

Lacuna Coil is a great female fronted metal band! Cristina Scabbia's voice is wonderful.

Then there's KHZ "Broken (what could've been)" e.g. is a great song, (ignore the video though, she's way too trashy in it)

I really like Nemhain but they're not really that big so might be hard to find not sure.

I really like (what last.fm classifies as) 'female-fronted symphonic metal'; some of the bands I've listened to and loved: Within Temptation, Nightwish (I prefer the new lead singer to the previous one), Lacuna Coil (not quite as 'symphonic' as the others but still good). Um... I've just found a band called Delain, quite similar to all the others listed, their album is pretty good.

Florence + the Machine is perhaps not quite the genre you're looking for but she is awesome nonetheless.
 
I love women with strong, powerful voices.

My favorite female singers are Tori Amos and Fiona Apple. There are a ton of other women singers I adore but for pure quality of voice, those would be my top 2.
 
Joan Jett (Runaways or Joan Jett and the blackhearts) and of course the allmighty PATTI SMITH. Patti Smith is AMAZING.

Oh and I just read that Heart put out a new album a couple years ago. Supposedly it sounds more like their earlier stuff but I haven't heard it yet.
 
Umm... This is the exact wrong question for me. How about Avril Lavigne? I've never heard her, and I don't know what kind of music she performs, but I just learned that she's a girl!

There's Soho Dolls too, they're kind of rock, more alternative though I guess.
 
Damn, I was going to with the Gwen-ster myself, but you already said No Doubt. She's more ska-punk than alternative, but I just loved her raw energy and spirit. No Doubt and Sublime frequently toured together, and they were quintessential ska. Especially the early No Doubt, before "Tragic Kingdom" (Don't Speak, Sunday Morning, etc). She DOMINATES when she's on stage. Then she turned pop. 😡 Oh well.

I don't know any female rock singers nowadays that turns my doorknob, mostly because I think most music of today sucks, but if your looking for the classics, I'd pick Janis Joplin over anyone.

My pick for one of the best female rock singers ever, as well as many other applicable genres, would be Kelly Clarkson. She's VASTLY underrated and is consistently amazing live. Here's some performances to just give you a taste of what I'm talking about. She slays... just like Buffy. 😎
