Google "Angel Spike Darla Drusilla the whirlwind" and you'll see a lot of links about it. I think Darla made the first reference, and a lot of fans have taken it to mean she was referring to the group of them, though I suppose it is open for debate.
That's interesting, I've never heard that before. I just googled it and read the buffy wiki article The Whirlwind and tend to agree with the opinions on it's talk page about how "whirlwind" was never meant to mean the team, just that Darla meant the sense of being caught in a whirlwind. I also read three conversations where the characters meantion whirlwind and it simply seems to be a emotion, or state of mine, not a group of vampires. I do however understand the need to have a name for the four vampires.

Episode Release:
ANGELUS: Come on. Why the stalling? You whipped up a rain of fire, blotted out the sun, earthquakes...all to maneuver the Brady Bunch into releasing Angel's inner me. Don't you wanna kick the tires?
MYSTERIOUS VOICE: So beautifully vain, but the whirlwind doesn't always revolve around you. Destruction sometimes is its own reward.
Episode Darla:
DARLA: You still have a soul.
ANGEL: I'm still a vampire.
DARLA: You're not. Look at you. I don't know what you are anymore.
ANGEL: You know what I am. You *made* me, Darla. I'm Angelus.
DARLA: Not anymore.
ANGEL: I can be again. Just give me a chance to prove it to you.
DARLA: You almost make me believe you.
ANGEL: Believe it. We can have the whirlwind back.
Episode Darla again:
ANGEL: Darla? Darla! Darla. Darla?!
(spots a terrified missionary family, saves them from an attacker. Backs away.)
DARLA: Angelus? (excited) The whirlwind, Angelus! (senses the family) Hmm, what's over here?
ANGEL: Nothing. Bodies. Let's find something warm.

Whirlwind? I thought they were called 'the Fanged Four'
I've always assumed that was also another fan made name. Like the Scourge of Europe.

xaphania agrees: I think the 'Scourge of Europe' is canon.
I doubt that. I searched The Buffyverse Dialouge Base, found now reference for the "family" being called the scourge.
I used to think Giles calls him the scourge of ireland or something in Angel(btvs season 1), but I just looked at some transcripts but found nothing. The transcripts on that site have been wrong before though.
