I guess I'm the logical person to start this poll, as my username is inspired by them. So who's your fave? And why?

Mine's Spike. I like how he kept some of his human traits. Plus he killed two slayers. That's pretty awesome for a vampire.

I'm with Amy on that... Since when are they called 'The Whirlwind'? And my choice is Spike, obviously. 😉

Google "Angel Spike Darla Drusilla the whirlwind" and you'll see a lot of links about it. I think Darla made the first reference, and a lot of fans have taken it to mean she was referring to the group of them, though I suppose it is open for debate.

Gotcha!
I have definitely heard of the Whirlwind before! I think the references are more in AtS if I recall correctly. And I love your username. 🙂

I'd say Darla. She is their sire/grandsire after all. Even though Angelus has the deepest connection to the rest of the 3 (& he is one of my favorite Buffyverse characters), she is more of the central, uniting figure in some ways, the lynch pin (to use a Bones reference!). I adore her AtS arcs. I have just come to like her character, and the actress, more and more the more I watch AtS. We see so many various facets of her: human prostitute, vampire, her death by Angel, her new humanity (the good & the bad!), vampire again. And I never fail to cry during her 3-part pregnant arc in season 3. The fact that she, one of the vilest vampires, kills herself so that her baby can live, is amazing.

I absolutely love Angelus, because evil Angel is awesome, but my vote goes to Spike. Because he is awesome personified.

I voted for Darla - I just love her character. I knew when watching the early episodes of season 1 of BtVS that Darla was one to watch and was so upset when she was staked early on.

I loved seeing the history between her and Angel, and then the rest of the Whirlwind clan develop. I agree that her best came from her story arc in Angel - that made season 2 for me. I loved watching the character develop, seeing her as a human who hated having a soul, her attempts to turn Angel back to the darkside - loved the episode "Dear Boy" (one of my favourites). One of the key moments for me was the moment at the end of "The Trial" - once she has finally embraced her soul and humanity that she has fought against, Drusilla was brought in, and she is turned again. That moment when Angel is helpless, watching this take place was an incredible and heartbreaking scene. I especially loved Druisilla and Darla back in business over the following episodes. Love how Julie got to play Darla with a soul and then back to the darkness which is always so exciting to watch.

Plus Darla holds the record for most real deaths across Buffy and Angel - she has been killed FOUR times - sired by The Master in 1609, staked by Angel in 1997, sired by Drusilla in 2000 and then she staked herself in 2002.

So yes - DARLA ALL THE WAY!

🙂

Whirlwind? I thought they were called 'the Fanged Four'

I like Drusilla the best. She is sympathetic in her own way. She is smart, powerful, and really cares for her family (Angelus, Spike, and Darla). Even if she is certifiably insane.

Spike, even without a soul, became tame mentally and physically. Darla's voice annoys me. Angelus is cool and all, but if he'd be much more successful in his plans if he didn't feel the need to talk as much as he kills.

So, Drusilla.

That's interesting, I've never heard that before. I just googled it and read the buffy wiki article The Whirlwind and tend to agree with the opinions on it's talk page about how "whirlwind" was never meant to mean the team, just that Darla meant the sense of being caught in a whirlwind. I also read three conversations where the characters meantion whirlwind and it simply seems to be a emotion, or state of mine, not a group of vampires. I do however understand the need to have a name for the four vampires.

Episode Release:

ANGELUS: Come on. Why the stalling? You whipped up a rain of fire, blotted out the sun, earthquakes...all to maneuver the Brady Bunch into releasing Angel's inner me. Don't you wanna kick the tires?

MYSTERIOUS VOICE: So beautifully vain, but the whirlwind doesn't always revolve around you. Destruction sometimes is its own reward.

Episode Darla:

DARLA: You still have a soul.

ANGEL: I'm still a vampire.

DARLA: You're not. Look at you. I don't know what you are anymore.

ANGEL: You know what I am. You *made* me, Darla. I'm Angelus.

DARLA: Not anymore.

ANGEL: I can be again. Just give me a chance to prove it to you.

DARLA: You almost make me believe you.

ANGEL: Believe it. We can have the whirlwind back.

Episode Darla again:

ANGEL: Darla? Darla! Darla. Darla?!

(spots a terrified missionary family, saves them from an attacker. Backs away.)

DARLA: Angelus? (excited) The whirlwind, Angelus! (senses the family) Hmm, what's over here?

ANGEL: Nothing. Bodies. Let's find something warm.

Whirlwind? I thought they were called 'the Fanged Four'

I've always assumed that was also another fan made name. Like the Scourge of Europe.

xaphania agrees: I think the 'Scourge of Europe' is canon.

I doubt that. I searched The Buffyverse Dialouge Base, found now reference for the "family" being called the scourge.

I used to think Giles calls him the scourge of ireland or something in Angel(btvs season 1), but I just looked at some transcripts but found nothing. The transcripts on that site have been wrong before though.

The Scourge
The Scourge of Europe is canon. I'm 99.9% sure it is.
It's canon.

Angel was one of the most famous vampires, legendary for both his villainy and his heroism. Born Liam in 1727 in Galway, Ireland, he was sired by Darla in 1753 and changed his name to Angelus and was dubbed The Scourge of Europe, earning notoriety for being one of the most sadistic and brutal demons in history, and the most evil vampire ever recorded. Both The Master and the First Evil recognized how purely evil Angelus was. He was also known as The Demon with the Face of an Angel or The One with the Angelic Face because of his physical beauty.

It doesn't show the source, so for all we know, the writer just heard it somewhere.

On topic:

Spike is my favorite character ever. But I thnk Angelus is just awesome. Disgusting, hot, evil and charming(in a way). So intriguing. I love that we can just hate him, and want bad things to happen to him, without feeling guilty.

Everytime I watch a scene when Spike's bad and I think "He should die screaming" this voice inside of my head says; But he's nice soooometiiiiimes. It's like that with lots of evil characters.

But not with Angelus. He's just bad.

At any rate, its more canon than Whirlwind, Fang Gang, or Fanged Four..

How? Not questioning your sense of canon, we all have the right to view canon as we like, I'm just interested in your POV.

Btw, Whirlwind, I hope you don't mind that we're off topic. If you want me to stop, I will.
