By this, I mean characters that really aren't integral to a show's plot generally but are always kind of there in the background for a laugh. My favorite at the moment:

Creed from The Office.

His short exchange with Jim in the most recent episode is a perfect example of why this character is great:

CREED: I want to set you up with my daughter.
JIM: Oh, I'm engaged to Pam.
CREED: I thought you were gay.
JIM: Then why would you want to set me up with your daughter?
CREED: I don't know.

Didn't she get arrested for drugs or something like that?

Ahh, I love Creed! He has the best quotes ever...

"Nobody steals from Creed Bratton and gets away with it. The last person to do this disappeared. His name? Creed Bratton."

"The guy was just hanging brain, what's all the fuss? (cuts to Creed's 'talking head') If that's flashing, then lock me up."

"Creed Bratton has never declared bankruptcy. When Creed Bratton gets in trouble, he transfers his debt to William Charles Schneider."

"(after winning a mini fridge) Thanks, I've never owned a refrigerator before."

Dwight: (holding up a picture of a drug) What's this?
Creed: That's 'Northern Lights' cannabis indica.
Dwight: ...no. It's marijuana.

He almost makes me wish I still watched The Office.

I love Mrs. McCluskey on Desperate Housewives. 🙂 She's freakin' awesome:

I second Revolver and Crazy Flake's choice of Creed. I love him, everything he says is just instant gold. But my favourite minor characters from a tv show goes to the lone gunmen of X Files fame. I love every episode they were in and think they are fantastic characters individually and even better as a team.

edit: they count as minor characters, right?

Kevin Dorfman from Monk (he would be in it once, maybe twice a season)

Ya! they ruled. Ok... I'm a guy who watched GG, but still, they rocked.

Seconded. But moreso as Mrs Landingham on The West Wing. Two Cathedrals was the saddest (and best) episode of TV I've ever watched. I'm getting angry about the tragedy of it all just THINKING about it!

And here I was thinking you would say the not chocolate guy from Charmed....for shame! ;)

Yep, very sad indeed. Watched it two days ago actually. Have never figured out why it ended like that. Was it planned from the very start? The show had many minor characters that were great but most of them wasn't around all the time. Just 10 - 20 episodes. Ainsley (you got to love her. Im thinking about asking you to do an Ainsley banner for me. 😉) and Joey Lucas comes to mind. And I liked Kenny too. Danny wasn't too bad. Ok, I could go on forever so I better stop. But Margaret was in a lot of episodes so I guess I can take her as someone that fits in this thread.

I'm gonna have to Friend it up.... 😉

I loved Gunther! He was so adorable! His whole unrequited love for Rachel was sweet...I almost wish he had managed to get her at some point 😉

Awww Gunther Rocks!! :D
Cory and Trevor from Trailer Park Boys.

Does anyone else watch the show?! ('Cept you, CotA, I know you do..)

They're hilarious. Ricky is constantly giving them shit, they're always getting into stupid situations, and into trouble, they're so funny.

Cory: "J-Roc raps about gangsters & guns, pimps & ho's and Compton. The guy's not from Compton, he's just a white kid from a trailer park. He should rap about what he really knows, which is living in his mom's trailer eating peanut butter sandwiches."

Ricky: Knock, Knock, Trevor.
Trevor: I'm not gonna say, "Who's there?", man.
Ricky: You just did, you f-cking idiot!
[tears off his pants]

Philip Glenister's Gene Hunt (at the moment) from Life on Mars spin off Ashes to Ashes, some of his lines are fabulous. But too risque to type here lol

Gene Hunt is not now, nor has he ever been a 'minor' character!

Zelenka and Lorne from Stargate: Atlantis.

Five agrees: Yeah, what happened to her anyway ?! They just stopped talking about her.

I think she was in rehab..Didn't Tru talk to her a few times? After that I guess we were just supposed to assume she was there. lol.

Gene Hunt is not now, nor has he ever been a 'minor' character!.

Very true! Gene Hunt was the star, or arguably co-star along with John Sims, of Life on Mars and is the undeniable stand alone star of Ashes to Ashes!

I'm afraid Keeley Whatshername is the minor star of the last named show.

Keith from the original version of The Office...I hesitate to say 'the best' as Ricky and Stephen are now writing on the American version...which seems to be quite popular 🙂
