Whats your favorite part of the Buffy verse mythology?

Can I just say the season 1 intro? I love that intro! I guess everything about the slayer mythology is the most interesting to me. I mean other shows have done the vamp mythology but everything about slayers was new and super cool and mostly it was well thought out. I like the feel of s1 when it comes to that.

Personally I like the Hellmouth.
Perfect plot device for 'Monster of the week' in a small town setting. It meant they could build up the town, its inhabitants, and all its locations to have an intimate feel to the setting, but still explain why weird crap always happened in a small Sunnydale town (and had apperently always happened here since its founding)

I also like the darker aspects of the Slayer that were always hinted at throughout the series- the hunting instincts, the urge to kill, the love of combat/violence, the...primal urges (Hungry and horny basically- because sex and death are closely linked in the human psyche anyway- surviving something bad makes you want to feel alive, ask any soldier.) and all the other things that seperated the slayer from the humanity they fought to protect.
It gave the protagonist a nice shade of grey- more fully explored with Faith than with Buffy- but Buffy shows all those same instincts, just not to the same degree. 🙂

Wolfram & Hart!

A lot of people hate lawyers and here we see a legal firm that is actually owned and operated by what we can assume to be Satan. Of all the mythology in the 'verse, the Satanic law firm with connections everywhere including other dimensions like Pylea is a really fresh concept. The employment contract continues after death - nice touch! This is an entity that has limitless funding and all of the knowledge of the world and afterworld available in a dozen books that fill with information on command (sort of like a printed version of the internet).

Theres a lot of good mythology that is brought up on both Buffy and Angel. I'm not sure if any of them are fully explored at least not the way I want them to be. But I like the idea of the Slayer and where she comes from and what it means to be one. The idea of the Hellmouth is also pretty cool.

On Angel I like the concept of the Powers That Be. I do wish that they showed more of the vampire mythology, being that Buffy vamps are different from other portrayals of vampires.

The Vampire mythology... for me true vampires are Buffyverse vamps. Dont get me wrong I do like other Vampire shows/movies... everything from Interview with a Vampire to Twilight and Vampire Diaries to True Blood.... but at the end of the day I am and forever will be a true blue loyal Buffy snob and I like my vamps best when they fit into Buffyverse rules 🙂

I like the vampire, too but I really wish they had fleshed out some of the teases in vampire mythos. What is the Order of Aurelius? Should I assume there are other Orders? The very fact that there is an Order reeks of age and organization that we never see in the other demons. It makes sense too - in a (theoretically) endless existence something like that would give some sense of stability. It also implies some sort of cooperation that (from what we see) is rare in the demon world.

One of the great additions in Angel was Necro-Tempered glass that allowed Angel to be filmed in daylight. Otherwise, most of the show would occur at night (or Angel would have had to keep the Ring of Amara or take up residence in Pylea). This allowed Angel to be filmed on a regular schedule rather than the night shift and gave a lighter, airier feel to the show even though the subject matter was quite dark. It also made it cheaper to film and solved some of the logistics of stuffing a 14-hour shooting schedule into 12 hours of night.

What brought this to mind: last year I ended up selling my old car (2001 Suzuki Esteem wagon) and getting a newer one (a 2009 Subaru Legacy wagon). One of the selling points was that around 2005, car manufacturers changed over to a glass formulation that cut out more of the UV rays. This was a selling point for my wife, who is of Danish and Scottish descent and sunburned easily even with the windows closed on the old car. My daughter and I inherited my father's Mediterranean skin that just tans, so it made no difference to us.

Probably the Slayer mythology. It doesn't make much sense - one girl in all the world (where they trying to give the demons a fighting chance? 😛) - but at the same time it has a nice mystical and important ring to it. I like the idea of the Slayer and the mysticism around being chosen or not and really just how it came to be, was thought up and all that. I find it fascinating.

I loved the concept of the Old Ones and the development of the human race - I think it's a really interesting comparison to the Garden of eden type motifs that runs throughout most mythlogies - it reminds me of Greek mythology with the titans etc., so I think it's awesome.

I probably just really like Sunnydale itself. I love the relatively small town California feel (and it's so California) and just the idea of the gang fighting vampires in what is effectively Santa Barbara (in my head Sunnydale and Santa Barbara are like the same place).

A close second would be Wolfram & Hart, which I think is one of the best parts of the Buffyverse.

My favourite part about the mythology would have to be the idea of The Slayer; one girl being chosen to protect the world and all the work and responsibility that goes along with it. I love what that represents to me for the real world. No matter what, always try and give your best in all situations. It's just the stakes that are raised by having the weight of the world on your shoulders.
I like the Slayer mythology more in the first 3 seasons as I like the closeness of the slayer/watcher relationship and how everything was still being discovered etc.

As others have mentioned; Sunnydale itself is a great mythology; the small town with all this supernatural importance- it's a great concept.

 

[Joan the Vampire Slayer]

I agree with Taake - the Slayer mythology. It's magical and mystical and powerful. I love this idea of a Chosen one - who must sacrifice one's own happiness to serve others. It's a true hero's journey, with religious undertones, and mirrors the story of Jesus or that of Joan or Arc, who felt she was doing God's will by fighting for her people.

Second would be The Powers That Be - Joss' version of God. I wish they'd been explored more, and we'd learned more about them.

I guess we still could, actually.

I think the idea of vengeance demons are pretty cool. Introduced originally as a monster of the week for a one-episode storyline, vengeance demons went on to play a large continuing role in the Buffyverse. Probably second only to vampires themselves in terms of most commonly referenced/used demons.
